5.0 out of 5 stars A classic collection of songs, 7 Mar. 2007
This review is from: The Best Of... (Audio CD)
Siouxsie & the banshees influenced some of the best music of the last decades. In fact, Trip-hop could have never existed wihout them.

MASSIVE ATTACK recorded a cover of "Metal Poscard"(from "The Scream") in 1997 for "The Jackal" cd. TRICKY sang in 1996 "Tattoo"(from "Downside-Up") on his "Nearly god" album. Other famous singers were also inspired by them : JEFF BUCKLEY covered live "killing Time"(from "Boomerang") which is a Siouxsie / The Creatures composition. MORRISSEY even recorded a single "Interlude" in duet with Siouxsie !!! where as others like Shirley Manson from GARBAGE wrote in 2003 the foreword of "The Siouxsie & The Banshees's Authorized Biography". So, this band can't be ignored in every good collection of albums.

This best-of is an excellent teaser to discover them. Classics like "Happy House" or "Hong Kong Garden", are as brilliant as any Blondie or Talking Heads songs. "Kiss them for me" is musically a catchy song close to New Order or Garbage and "Peek-A-Boo" is The Chemical Brothers meet Massive Attack.

This music is just superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars a timeless masterpiece that a artist like Morrissey loves, 21 Feb. 2007
This review is from: Ju Ju (Audio CD)
Siouxsie & The Banshees are one of the most exciting groups of this period 1978-1982. still today, many important artists adore them.

TRICKY did a cover of "Tattoo" (from Downside-Up) on its second album "Nearly God".

MASSIVE ATTACK recorded a version of "Metal Poscard" (from The Scream) for the cd of "The Jackal movie soundtrack".

JEFF BUCKLEY often performed live "Killing Time" (a song that Siouxsie composed and sang with its second group The Creatures on the Boomerang album). the buckley fans know well the version he did in london at the astoria 2 on january 18th 1995.

MORRISSEY stated in an interview for "GQ" in September 2005 that "Juju" is one of his favourite albums. MORRISSEY is such a hard-core fan of the group that he asked Siouxsie to record a duet with him in 1994 : the result is the gorgeous single "Interlude".

Juju is an alternative pop-rock record, extremely well conceived. so, it's not a surprise that it has been recently quoted in the book "1001 Albums: You Must Hear Before You Die", a book made by the most important journalists of several countries.

one has to listen to the very inventive guitars of "Nightshift", the incredible rhythmic of "Sin In My Heart", to realize that this album is excellent.

One finds in the bonus tracks with something special : an unreleased version of "fireworks" which is pretty intense. this one closes this remastered edition with a lot of strength.

5.0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece that is liked by Massive Attack and Morrissey, 8 Feb. 2007
This review is from: The Scream (Audio CD)
many artists like MASSIVE ATTACK or MORRISSEY were impressed by this siouxsie & the banshees album "The Scream" (first released in 1978) 'cse it marks in a certain way the end of an era and the beginning of the new wave.

MASSIVE ATTACK for instance used the music of "Metal Poscard" in 1997 for "super predators(metal poscard)" on the movie soundtrack cd "The Jackal".

it's not surprising 'cse the sound of guitars on the original version of "Metal Poscard" is peculiar and the atmosphere of the whole song is quite cinematic.

the guitars are sometimes spacious like on the gorgeous "pure", or scratching and nervous like on the very efficient "jigsaw feeling". they can also be soft like on the excellent "switch" (topped with a gorgeous saxophone part).

MORRISSEY also considers The Scream as one of his all-time favourite albums. he stated it in many interviews and as he admired the band very much, he even asked Siouxsie to record a duet with him in 1994 (on the single "interlude").

concerning the lyrics of The Scream, one can state that they are very different from the other bands of that era 'cse they don't cover social issues. they conjure up more images from dreams than precise facts.

This Remastered edition offers an excellent sound (very rich like on the deluxe edition), plus in the bonus, they added the legendary single "Hong Kong Garden" and the other top 20 single "the staircase".

"the scream" has been recently stated in the book "1001 Albums: You Must Hear Before You Die" made by the most important journalists of several countries.

one can recall that other bands like TRICKY or JEFF BUCKLEY covered songs of siouxsie & the banshees.

indeed, TRICKY recorded on his cd "Nearly God" a version of "Tattoo"(a song present on the siouxsie & the banshees boxset "Downside Up").

JEFF BUCKLEY used to perform live "killing time"(a song that siouxsie sings on the creatures album "boomerang").

Robert Smith of THE CURE even was the guitarist of siouxsie : he appeared on the live dvd "nocturne" and on the studio album "hyaena".

it's rare that a band manages to get as much as recognition from artists as important as massive attack, morrissey, tricky, jeff buckley or the cure. so rare that it's good to underline it.
