Portraits in Jazz: A piano album
Portraits in Jazz: A piano album
by Valerie Capers
Edition: Sheet music
Price: £8.50

2.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst collections of "Jazz" arrangements I have come across, 15 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the worst collections of "Jazz" arrangements I have come across; apart from "Sweet mister jelly roll", "blues for the duke" and "billie's song", the rest are either unbearably discordant or lacking any depth. I much prefer Pam Wedgewood's style of jazz arrangements for piano.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very much like Far Cry 3 on the positivie side, 29 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very much like Far Cry 3 on the positivie side: beautiful scenery, same gameplay, the ability to either go guns blazing or play more stealthfully. BUT it lacks the interesting storyline that Far Cry 3 had: you are returning to your parents' country and discover they were part of the resistance against a dictator, and not much more really, unlike Far Cry 3 where there was at least a good story having to free your mates and then having that annoying girlfriend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many anecdotes and much biographical information, not enough ideas, 7 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As with many of these types of book, the whole thing could have been condensed into 20 pages or so, but has been expanded to over 200. Far too much anecdotal and biographical detail about various economists and psychologists and too little in the way of useful or interesting concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Western Classical Music, 23 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent overview of Western Classical music, looking at the subject from a different perspectives: notation, equal temperament, opera, the piano, and recorded sound. Well-researched, well-produced, with excellent music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, 23 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Unmanned (Kindle Edition)
Fast-paced action, well-written, interesting topic. It's one of those books you just can't put down. If you like action, are interested in drones, subterfuge, covert-operations, the relationship between the military and private companies, I can strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book to own, 6 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Art Today (Paperback)
I got this book mostly for the illustrations, and I wasn't disappointed. It is a beautiful book to own and to dip into, with well laid out, good quality, large photos of a very diverse range of artwork. The commentary is also interesting, even though I'm not particularly interested in the text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Debunking myths about China, 6 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent book, that debunks many of the myths about China in areas such as economics, business, education, work ethic and politics. The author's thesis is that China is much more diverse than people think, and on the other hand Chinese people are just human beings like the rest of us. Very well written and easy to follow, with a wealth of references to back up his arguments. The only reason I don't give it five stars is the occasional autobiographical note by the author, which doesn't do anything for his arguments.

The SuperCollider Book
The SuperCollider Book

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly written, overcomplicated, all over the place, 10 April 2013
This review is from: The SuperCollider Book (Hardcover)
Even though I have a wealth of experience both writing computer programs and working in music, I found this book impossible to follow. The so-called "beginner's tutorial" does not explain the fundamentals, makes all sorts of assumptions, and jumps all over the place without any discernible logic. Allegedly there are three editors (but my suspicion is that this is just a way for three academics to put a book on their CV for the next govermnent research evaluation), but none have spotted the many errors, omissions, and nonsensical paragraphs in the book. There are some pretty pointless chapters (SuperCollider on Windows, Supercollider on Linux: do we really need a whole chapter devoted to installing the program on Windows or Linux???) but no comprehensive reference (or even partial reference) if we want to quickly understand what something does or means and a very incomplete index (e.g. where do I look to find what "kr" means? the pages referred to in the index cotain examples, but no definition).

Save your money and just follow one of the online tutorials.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellently written, but at times superficial analysis, 6 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is undoubtedly and excellenty written essay. And note it is a short essay, not a book. It has become a book only by increasing font size, including plenty of whitespace, lots of margin space, and plenty of semi-empty pages. And a whole bunch of very poorly executed photos (dear editors, Melville is an essayist, not a photographer; get a professional next time). Which begs the question why it is priced as a book and not a short essay.

But while it is very well written (almost poetic) the content leaves somewhat to be desired, with a rather superficial analysis of contemporary London. Yes, some of the ideas are good, but they need more thought and more factual backing, as often they just come across as unsubstantiated opinion.
