Judas Priest's British Steel
Judas Priest's British Steel
by Neil Daniels
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars More on the history of metal by Mr. Daniels, 10 Jun 2012
It seems that Neil Daniels is championing some campaign to have Judas Priest become a more recognisable name to heavy metal fans.

Not only did he write the excellent 'Defenders Of The Faith', but- with the 30th anniversary of the seminal British Steel album- he found another opportunity to introduce people to the band. In many respects it merely expands on the content of 'Defenders', but still very much worth a read for any metal fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars What apalling drivel...., 9 May 2012
As a big fan of the G.I. Joe (or Action Force, as it was called here in the UK) comic series and cartoons, I have to confess to having never seen this before I bought it. That's money I'm never seeing again...

The original cast of Joes and Cobras take a back seat to some new (and decidely two-dimensional) characters in a plot that appears to have been written by a group of monkeys trying to pass themselves as science-fiction writers. The only reason this film doesn't get 1-star is that I've watched 'G.I. Joe: the Rise Of Cobra'. Uggghhh......

4.0 out of 5 stars A good resource for metal-heads, 9 May 2012
Whilst there are a veritable library of books about Metallica currently available- including some excellent ones by Mick Wall and Joel McIver, various photo books (including those by Bill Hale and Ross Halfin), as well as Dave Mustane's own- Mr. Daniels provides an account of the early days of Metallica.

It begins with a foreword by Diamond Head's Brian Tatler (talking of his friendship with Lars Ulrich), before re-treading Metallica's early roots, and going on to discuss the early albums (Kill `Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and Justice). It also includes an appendices featuring a chronology of the band's albums post-`Justice', a number of bios of thrash bands from the Bay Area, and some information on timelines and discographies (amongst other things). It's a useful book with some good graphics work- and some of the factual anecdotes are interesting even if you're not a die-hard fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Journey isn't over yet...., 6 May 2011
You'd be forgiven if you didn't know of the band Journey before the cast of a TV show called `Glee' performed their most recognised number- you know, the one this book is named after- in 2010. Now, everybody should get in on the act: and this book is a really good place to start. It still astounds me that a band that has sold more than 80 million albums (and probably more than that by now) has never had a book published about them before now. Well worth the money, the book contains as complete a chronicle of the band's history from 1973 to 2010 as is legal to print.

There is a large amount on former front man Steve Perry (there actually is a chapter dedicated to his solo career), as well as a `Where Are They Now?'. (The quotes from former manager Herbier Herbert make for great reading themselves). Worth a look for anyone who is a fan of the rock genre; and an absolute must fro any Journey fan. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best show nobody's heard of..., 4 Mar 2011
This review is from: Burn Notice - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
'Burn Notice' follows the fortunes (and lack thereof) of Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan)- a covert operative for the United States government who suddenly finds himself without a job thanks to a burn notice- an order blacklisting him in the intelligence community. Stranded in Miami, Michael has to take various odd jobs as a bodyguard, private detective and thief (amongst others) in order to make ends meet while trying to find out who is responsible for getting him burned. In this quest, he has help from ex-Navy SEAL Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell), former lover and ex-IRA member Fiona Glenanne (Gabrielle Anwar) and- in some instances- his mother Maddy (Sharon Gless).

'Burn Notice' is a brilliant take on the spy genre- it incorporates all of the intrigue and action you would expect a series about espionage to have, as well as introducing memorable characters and a dash of humour to the proceedings. I have yet to meet anyone who hasn't enjoyed it, and will still give my highest recommendation to anyone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chance is a non-factor in this Wild Cards book, 29 Aug 2010
Having read the first two books in the series, I had begun to get used to the format of numerous short stories. The only problem with this in the Wild Cards novels- although they were still very enjoyable- was that there were some niggling inconsistencies between stories.
Jokers Wild changes all that. While there are several separate arcs connected by one common thread, there are none of the inconsistencies. The characters (minus their powers, of course) do seem very believable, and the story flows very well through all the strands. I would consider this book a very worthwhile investment to fans of the superhero genre- but equally, I think it is a very good book and as such would heartily recommend it to avid readers who want something 'a bit different'.

5.0 out of 5 stars I know it's only rock & roll... and you'll like it..., 8 Aug 2010
Being a big fan of the first volume of 'All Pens Blazing', I was happy to hear about a second volume. And I'm happier still to have read it. Featuring more rock star rock writers' stories, it's a great addition to any library. Recommended reading for any rock music fans or budding music journalists, this second volume of 'All Pens Blazing' makes for great reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep on rocking, 2 May 2010
Neil Daniels has now written several actual rock biographies- including those of Judas Priest, Linkin Park, Bon Jovi and Robert Plant. This collection of interviews, compiled from material spanning several years, has a number of great contributions from articles he has written for various music magazines in between those books. The transcriptions of these interviews, collected here, give you a glimpse of what it might be like to be an actual rock writer. Makes for more than 'slightly interesting' reading, especially if you're a rock music fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Updating products...., 2 May 2010
This is a really good buy for anybody who likes rock biographies and didn't buy the original 'Defenders Of The Faith' book: this one has all the same material, but has been updated to include the 2008-early 2010 time frame. If you haven't already bought a copy, this would be the one to get.
