4.0 out of 5 stars good but no cigar, 11 Jan 2011
I was hoping for more match highlights, particularly from the tests, and so the second DVD was a disappointment. The first disc was excellent; providing great behind the scenes footage interspersed with clips from the matches, illustrating the emotional rollercoaster of this Lions tour for the players and management. With commitment and carnage such as this, why does anyone bother to watch football? There is no team sport more exciting than rugby played at this gladiatorial level. A warning if buying this as a gift for younger viewers: the pre-match verbals are very strong. My rugby-playing nephew will have to wait till he is 14 before he receives this; I don't want an ear bashing from his mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant in every way, 11 Jan 2011
Bought this as a Xmas present for rugby playing nephew (aged 11) and I was tempted to keep it for myself (have to buy another copy!). Considering the relatively rudimentary production values at the time, this is a brilliant DVD; made more so by the two commentary options. We watched first with Cliff Morgan's lilting contribution then, a week later, we watched the game again accompanied by Gareth Edwards, Phil Bennett and David Duckham chatting in the background. It was interesting to hear the ancient players having the same discussions as we did! The rule changes, the casual but quick scrummaging (penalties for 'not straight' and 'foot up'!), the line-out mayhem, magical side-steps from Bennett and Duckham, the handling errors (they were only amateurs), the extraordinary pressure from the All Blacks for most of the match (how did they lose?) and, of course, the greatest try in modern rugby, in which England's hooker linked up with some of the best backs the game has ever seen; who were all from Wales! Brilliant, completely brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars rugby and world history, 11 Jan 2011
Bought this as a Xmas present for rugby-playing nephew (aged 11) along with 'British and Irish Lions 2009: Living with the Pride'. Decided the agricultural language in the latter was too strong for him and the apartheid history in the former was over his head. Plus neither DVD had enough game time, especially from the test matches. However, both DVDs provide good examples of the camaraderie and intensity to be found on a Lions tour (as on any rugby tour!). Behind the scenes footage is fascinating and I would recommend to anyone aged over 14, with apologies to the child's mother.
