5.0 out of 5 stars easy read, it doesn't have any pretensions to be ..., 6 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I downloaded this when it was a free trial offer and it was well worth reading – more "Deadwood" than "Rawhide" with apparently more "coarse language" and sex than some reviewers were expecting, and with just a hint of the supernatural. A short, easy read, it doesn't have any pretensions to be literature, just a fun ride that manages to evoke the spirit of the Western but with plenty of gritty realism about the hardships faced by travellers and settlers. I'll look out for more works by the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the price you get a fantastic size cage, 10 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For the price you get a fantastic size cage. The roof has a carry handle and the overall cage is lightweight and easy to move around when necessary. There are two good sized doors, one at the front and centre of the cage and one in the roof.

The provided water bottle is very nice and is easy to clip into the cage, and a food dish is included, as is a plastic house that requires minimal assembly. Two wheels are included and they easily fit anywhere on the sides of the cage, and in my experience they are very quiet! I'd love to get a larger version since the wheels seem a little on the small side for a fully grown Syrian but perfect for a smaller hamster or mouse. That said, since having all this new space my hamster spends less time in her wheel and more time climbing around and investigating her habitat.

I'd recommend the cage with a few caveats; be prepared for some frustration during the initial set-up - if you have any dexterity issues you might require some help - although once it's assembled it's easy to maintain. While the flatpack cage and roof aren't too difficult to assemble, the bubble windows were very fiddly to fit – you need to soften the plastic with a bit of heat and then slot the window into the top half of the connector ring and then press the lower half into the cage. There are no instructions provided.
The shelves are awkward to put in, quite flimsy and fragile, and it's easy to break the clips that sit over the bars. Make sure you have planned where to put the shelves, taking into account the position of the door and roof access before starting! The shelves only rest on the wire rather than clip so they can slip off while you're trying to install the shelf above – it's more secure once the roof is on, but it's easier to get the shelves in with access to both the top and bottom of the cage during the initial setup.
Also there are three shelves but positioning the highest so the ramp touches the next shelf leaves a lot of wasted space at the top of the cage. It's best if you have some accessories you can add to make the best use of the space, especially if you're worried about your pet falling from a height.
The ramps are sturdier but they too rest in the provided holes in the shelves rather than clip in and are constantly knocked loose by my hamster. I'm thinking of replacing them with ladders if I can get the right size to attach to the shelves.

There's plenty of space to add in things like toys, other houses, a hamster toilet, or sand bath, so it's quite versatile. Smaller plastic pods are selling for a higher price than I paid, so overall this is a good purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars this is a great buy. Loads of space and plenty of pockets ..., 10 Jun. 2015

The provided hook isn't up too much so I used a wire coat hanger pushed through the opening instead, though it needed some reinforcing to hold it securely. Other than it, this is a great buy. Loads of space and plenty of pockets for organising all your bits and pieces/plenty of pairs of shoes. Fairly sturdy. Very useful.

Speedily dispatched CD brought as a gift for a friend, great selection of songs - though if other CDs are already owned, check the track listing as there are many track repeats throughout the various albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Adventure, 9 May 2010
This review is from: The Violent Enemy (Paperback)
This is a reissue of a Jack Higgins classic and does not feature Sean Dillon in case there is any confusion on that matter. As an earlier novel it feels fresher, more vibrant than some of his more recent works. However it also come across as much a product of its times. Taken as such, it is still a compelling, if later forgettable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning conclusion to a trilogy, 9 May 2010
This review is from: The Gates of Hades (Paperback)
I picked up the second book in the series in a charity store and I loved it. I loved it so much that while I didn't necessarily need to read the first episode (though I will one day!) I desperately needed to read the conclusion!
This series is based upon the Greco-Roman mythological heroes of Jason and his argonauts and, most importantly, the demi-god Hercules. In this book, Jason is killed and the grieving Hercules must undertake his most dangerous mission yet; to enter Hades, the underworld, and retrieve his friend's soul.
A cracking adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord John: a great character, 9 May 2010
While I'd never heard of the Outlander series I loved this book about Lord John. The historical detail was impressive, the idea of a gay character (whose sexuality is present and addressed but not the main plot driver) in a time when the crime of "sodomy" was hanging is fascinating, and the mystery is intriguing.
I also had little desire to read Outlander; I can't understand why the intelligent Lord John is preoccupied with Jamie Fraser. In this novel my introduction to him shows him only as a violent, homophobic man. Supposedly his rape by a male lets him treat all homosexuals as deviants. Yeah, okay...
I have also read the other current Lord John novels and was looking forward to the next. However Gabaldon's diatribe about fanfic (unoriginal! Exactly like white slavery/seducing my husband/stalking my daughter/stealing my car; get your own characters like I always do except for you know, the real historical personages I use in my fiction!) has soured my attitude towards her. Knitting your own Lord John doll and giving that to your friends, or making a tea named after him is OK, but actually thinking about him as a person (something that only happens when a character is well-realised as Lord John is) is a crime. A pity, because Lord John/Major Grey is a fascinating character - despite his poor taste in partners (the homophobic Jamie; in another book, a cheating lover)

My copy also included a short story about Lord John and the Hellfire Club (excellent, although features another doomed love interest for our luckless hero Lord John) and first two chapters of the latest Outlander book at the time (which decided me against buying any Outlander fiction).

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC FANTASY FOR ALL THE FAMILY, 1 May 2010
As I have never read the books I cannot comment on the adaptation. However this show is fun for all the family with the moral aspects (good vs evil), the love story (Richard/Kahlan), the humour (Zedd) the gorgeous New Zealand scenery, and the beauty of Tabrett Bethell (Cara) - not to mention Richard's abs and Kahlan's epic hair. With a strong focus on magic and fantasy this show is also rooted in the archetypes familiar from "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings". With great supporting guests like Craig Parker, Ted Raimi, and Jolene Blalock, this show has high production values and is a lot of fun.
