5.0 out of 5 stars excellent portrayl, done in an even handed and non judgemental way, 25 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Field Punishment No.1 [DVD] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
In the pantheon of films concerning war, this is probably an inportant eye pener to people who have now knowledge of this aspect of war.

the treatment these men faced is shown warts and all is shown in teh film and it is uncomfortable veiwing and I think thats important to understand that beliefs can be differnt and in a "free" society you have the right to them what ever they may be. As soon as you try to gag, or circumvent that belief then you cease to be a free society. The overall tone of teh film I found quite even handed, apart from the fact that it seems always to be figures of authority that are always the ones handing out the abuse, where as plenty of men in the line viewed these men as cowards. There were plenty of mixed feeling about these men from all ranks. Other than that it was pretty even handed in its portrayl of a difficult subject. The acting is very good and the feel of the war is there, so you feel teh jeapody and the place in time well.

If your lookng for an interesting, thought prokoking, often harrowing ( especially the scene that portrays what happens to mark Briggs, who would later become a new zealand politician), but overall a human story then this is for you. its about struggle. the struggle of men to hold onto thier beliefs when a world seems to have gone mad. the lone voices in the cacophony of war asking why we have to kill each other.

I didnt get the feel of the usual anti war film, the authority figures are seen as either doing thier jobs because they feel they have to, because of teh system they are invested in, and the objectors come across as human beings who are not sanctimonious, just explaining thier standpoint. It basically tells a story well, one that wont be universaly accepted but this happened and its important that people know it did which ever side of teh argument they fall on. Me personaly, as someone who has studid war and soldiers at an academic level and in my working life continue to do so beleive its harder to go against the grain in most situations than it is to go with the flow. Bravery doesnt involve carrying a gun, its the courage to enter into a situation thats likley outcome that will cause you mental or physical pain for others. that can and is interpreted well in this film. neither camp, fight or not is shown poorly in this film. you find you understand them better after watching it

3.0 out of 5 stars its not bad, and its not great, 25 Mar. 2015
its not bad, and its not great.

with these kinds of fantasy films the world is your oyster when figuring out how to make it. The bench marks in my oppinion are willow and teh princess bride. great adventures that sweep the audience along on a thrill ride where teh characters are interesting and almost lve outside the film, and where you care what happens to them. Well....this Im afraid doesnt achieve either. The overall tone of the film is flat, you dont find yourself caring what happens really, its an ok film which is entirely watchable, but that about it. The performances by two oscar winners are ok but at no point do you find the characters develop, or do you find yourself involved in the film. its a "slay the witch" by the numbers movie that you have seen time and time again. The story is obvious, the people are mainly obvious, and teh dialogue, even the jokes fall flat. I think this is a directional, editing issue more than the actors. For some reason it has ended up as a by the numbers fantasy movie instead of what t could have been which was a franchise possible adventure romp.

In short you wont hate it but I dont think you will be watching it a second time unless in 10 years time you find it on tv late at night with nothing else to watch

4.0 out of 5 stars very good but niche, 3 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
if your looking athese headphones then teh main reason is that you work in an open plan office with lots of backround noise. If your looking for music headphones then look else where as there are better cheaper ones out there for that. if your looking for a combination of the two then you are probably safe with this.

the sound quality is very good in speach and very good in music or video sound ( I have heard better over teh years but just as straight headphones without the features available with this)

I wont go into all the things it does as that is in teh description above but I will say a few things I found

the ANC is good but not awe inspiring for the money

eeven with the music off you are still going to want to take off the headphones to have a conversation with someone in the room ( depending on your quality of hearing in some ways, and some people naturaly talk quietly)

you can connect to lots of devices but you would think fo rthis money it would be wireless, not a very long lead

its comfortable

does the job on teh most part

easily storable and mobile in its neoprene soft case.

I think its a very good effort but needs a version 2 to push it over the edge I feel

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 2 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
there is no where near enough written ( in english) that cover the "sideshow" aspects of teh first workd war from the Turkish point of veiw in this kind of depth and understanding.

the book gives you a short opening to the Ottoman hstory prior to the war which is a good primer to anyone not familiar. WIth that solid ground established you are taken on a political, social, an military journey into the fine detail of teh ottomans struggle to maintain its empire through out the middle east, from teh famed Gallipoli campaign to teh lesser known aspects of its actions in the middle east. It fleshes out the people involved, from teh soldiers to the polticical figures well, counting for both sides. I came away witha greater understanding of the secular "young Turls" and what made them tick, and a few little details that I hadnt come across before for explainging certain actions by the britsih when it came to interning two ships being made for teh turks prior to teh war. I knew it happened and teh basics of why but there were a few other things involved it was useful to know.

If you want a excellent starting point to look at the otherside veiwpoint of teh middle eastern/ottoman theatre I think you will do well to start here before moving onto specific theatres and battles. the Author has previously proved his knowledge of this area in his previous books on teh suject of the arabic peoples and he continues in the same vein with this. With teh anniversery this year of teh beginings of war with Turkey I beleve in reading this you will either expand your knowledge, or have a few myths wiped away

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent but pricey and a bit fiddly, 22 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
well after seeing the price of this compared to my usual £40 buzzing toothbrush I was curious to see what the differnce could actually be. And to be honest I am really impressed, which I didnt think I was going to be

first things first, the charging system
two charging options, the case for traveling plugs into the mains by removable lead, which means you dont have to take the brush from teh case to charge it, which is a nice touch, and teh main charger that sits under teh supplied glass and is a contact charger ( through the glass) so its neat and tidy in your bathroom( or you take teh glass off the charger and keep that in your bathroom) which is a nice feature as it looks better in your bathroom, and also is easier to charge as you just put teh brush in teh glass and as sson as it makes contact with the glass it starts charging

the toothbrush in itself has all these differnt settings ( that your supposed to go through in one sitting ( if you have that sort of time) which are engaged by pressing teh on button again to change which can be a bit tricky esspecially if you have teh brush outside your mouth ( perapre to spray the mirror with toothpaste). in all honesty though I have to say I find after a month it has done a hell of a job keeping my teeth clean and free of buildup and they do seem whiter ( smoker coffee drinker so I notice). It really does seem to get to those places other dont reach, and at the same time it keeps its charge for ages ( I have charged it once in a month and its still going strong )

so in short, its robust, excellent at what its supposed to do, less unsightly in the bathroom, and keeps its charge for ages

bugs: its pot luck changing settings on the fly, and its expensive....I say this but then you have to ask, how much are your teeth worth to you , plus teh dentist is expensive as well and this would be a good way to start avoiding them.

all in all impressed

4.0 out of 5 stars clever, 8 Feb. 2015
a rom com with a differnce

a story of a script writer trying to write a rom com who has never experinced love and getting help of one woman and his gaggle of odd writer buddies to get it finished

well, its funny, its cleverly written and all round enjoyable. says a bloke. I watched this expecting teh usual cliche's but to be honest all teh cliche's they have fun with and yuo dont mind that they are there. the all star cast deliver thier cameos well, and you found yourself caring how it turns out and apart from teh obvious ending - it wouldnt be a rom com without it- its a fun and clever ride to the end. it feel more like a film that will achieve semi cult status than one that will make huge amounts at teh box office but all in all I really enjoyed the writing and teh humour in it more than your usual rom com

how to make a main charatcer totaly unlikeable

ts just boring to be honest, becuase at no point are you rooting for wahlberg. he is just unlikebale and when he screws up you dont care. teh bad guys are more interesting than he is and his habbit of doing everything that you wouldnt drives you mental, to the point where you just cease to care what happes to him. he is essentially a man who borrows money, gambles, loses it, gets it back and instead of paying his debts he loses it again.then gets an idea to get it back and everything is sorted in the end...sound not really and it well, wasnt. avaoid unless yur looking for a sleep aid or want to see john goodman semi naked

5.0 out of 5 stars and Im glad I did, 27 Jan. 2015
This review is from: The Guest [DVD] (DVD)
I watched this on a whim after watching an interveiw with stevens, and Im glad I did. I went in expecting nothing, knew nothing about it it really, and expected dan stevens from downton to show up.

how surprised I was when this film just kept giving, not in a high brow meaningful film. more the 80s action/psychological thriller genre. it seemed to mix, the HITCHER,TERMINATOR,DEAD CALM, and anything made by john carpenter in teh 80s, and its great. stevens is awesome. you spend teh film trying to work out whether he is good guy or bad guy, and in teh end you dont care what he is, you just want to see more of stevens and teh character, I hope there is a sequal soon, it was like watching taken fr teh first time. totaly didnt expect such a good movie that was fun, funny, thrilling, well paced, and with an awesome soundtrack. recomend this to any fan of of the 80s. doesnt look 80s, just has that feel to it...and dan stevens is awesome and not what you expect in it

2.0 out of 5 stars made rob roy look like die hard, 27 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Taken 3 [DVD] (DVD)
If you liked taken.....just watch it again and just forget the other two were ever made

now dont think this is worse than taken 2...its would have had to really try hard to be worse than that piece of ( insert prefered expletive)

they seemed to have taken all teh characters from taken you loved ( liam neeson and thats about it ) and ignored all the things that made the original great, story, pacing, set piece action scenes, a great line and made american style throw away B movie action flick that thinks that its audience will be happy just having liam in it and thats about it. to be honest the bad guys are boring and you dont care if they live or die, the plot plods so badly I found myself thinking about other things while watching it and only paying attenton when I heard gunfire. its just dull, uninteresting, unoriginal, seemed about 3 hours instead of the hour and half movie it is. its just rubish, even throwing his famous line in at the end seemed forced and out of contect, and lacking any kind of emotion.

the only good thing was that liam neeson has now got enough moey to put his kids through college

the original film was great, a european director style film, with interesting events, bad guys, action, and dialogue.....the sequals lack....well all of that so dont bother, go watch the original again, its a better use of your time

5.0 out of 5 stars waterproof ( better after you proof teh outside with a decent weather ..., 24 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
my wife swears by this make and is now on her second pair of similar shoes, which she uses for dog walking and she likes to find every puddle, mud hole, and anywhere else she can coat them in a thick layer of mud. her feet she told me satyed dry, as long as you didnt get ankle deep, they support you ankles thanks to the wide sole, and they are warm, waterproof ( better after you proof teh outside with a decent weather proofer) and they fit nice and snuggly) I wiuld suggest that you make sure you check your size properly before buying any shoe wear online)

well after going to teh lake district with these I can say that they stand up to the riggers of hill walking and getting properly wet and muddy, no issues, and it even spruured my wife to buy that second pair to replace her now welded on dirt pair ( she promises to look after her new ones properly but I doubt she will put that much into cleaning them after a long walk in teh rain with the dog) after all thats was all that was an issue with teh pair she has had for years, they are just not the same colour anymore, a deffinate shade of brown

so, in short, strong, comfortable, reliable, and will last for ages through not much maintenance. this pair are holding up nicely, and my wife is a fan so give them a go
