4.0 out of 5 stars ok, 10 Aug. 2012
This review is from: My Granny Is a Pirate (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
lets not kid ourselves, this is not a page turner. I base my reveiw on teh childs reaction to it and not my own feelings. grannies exploits as a pirate aside I had a mixed reaction from the nephews, it didnt have the same hold as teh gruffolo. also its a bit samey and to be honest I wasnt getting into it like the latter and as such probably effected my delivery. not one I will be getting out again for a while but worth it for a change

4.0 out of 5 stars good idea mostly, 10 Aug. 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
not to go over old ground teh idea of a tied to pram toy is a great idea. no more having to retrieve it from the floor and your kid may turn it into a bungi type game, needless to say you wont be constantly bending down to pick it up, plus the idea you can teather a waling child to teh pram as well so you control the pesky little escape artists bids for freedom. now as for tieing yourself to teh pram I think might be a step too far...however I do remember stories of prams being left behind in shops by absent minded parents ( my mother!!!) so its possibly a good idea in some ways, over kill in others

4.0 out of 5 stars not what I expected...who knew operators could act?, 11 July 2012
This review is from: Act of Valour [DVD] (2012) (DVD)
well I expected this to be a gung ho piece of rubbish, but seen as notghing else was on I sat down and strapped myself in ready for a cheese fest with lots of spent ammo

well I was plesently surpised. it wasnt badly acted ( especially seen as alot of the military cast are serving SEALS), just a little wooden in parts but keaneu gets millions for doing that. the plot is more realistic than most, and teh action sequences are cut in a minimalistic way that makes them more realistic. less pointless dialogue and plot points to the sound of gunfire. played basically like a doumentry with an understated plot and character development, which was good as you dont want to give teh amatuers too much to do in teh way of talking. lookjs a bit B movie in parts but ony in short instances. Makes you wonder what hollywood burns all that money on when it seems all you need is some seals, lots of ammo, and a bit of competence and you have all the makings of an very good action movie.

all in all for what its was I actually enjoyed it. I know people are going to think some of its cheesey and been done before. however I found this more realistic in its execution than most forced war films.

3.0 out of 5 stars visually interesting but..., 21 Jun. 2012
This review is from: Rampart [DVD] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
the fractured narative was a little too fractured

after reading other reveiws I wasnt looking forward to it. I can see what other reviewers meant in slamming this film and also why others ( the minority ) liked it. visually its excellent the camera work is original and teh editing allowed the film to clip along at a decent pace and kept me interested. however....we come to the plot... woody is a bad cop who is finally being found out and his life is collapsing around him, affecting his relationships with family and collegues. ok we have seen this before, however its like glimpses of things where nothing is resolved, in fact the ending made us use the combined groan of..."oh what is that it!"

so all in all its was a masterclass in how to visualy set up a film however it will only be film students that take that away from this. if your looking for an evening of cop drama you may find yourself throwing the remote at the telly

4.0 out of 5 stars fills a small hole in the market, 22 May 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
the basic reason to buy this phone is to have the ability to make calls using your iphone without sapping your battery. how do you do this?
well you pair the iphone via bluetooth to the handset and so all your mobile calls are diverted to the handset. simple. how useful this is though I am not sure, mainly as people spend alot more time texting than actually making and accepting calls with iphones. so this is a downside from that point. however as a work phone I think this would be excellent in the workplace. however I thin it has limited potential in the home unless you recieve alot of calls via your iphone at home.

I think its a good idea that needs work, iplus teh fact that there is no answerphone is another downside. but if you are the person described above then this is for you. its quite solidly made and is of modern styling so doesnt feel or look cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, an example to other writers, 15 May 2012
I bought this for two reasons. the strength of the reviews and the fact that I did not know enough about british involvement in korea were the driving forces and thinking 1950 would be a great place to start I dived in. well as a piece of writing it is a joy to read. the writer knows how to weave a narrative effortlessly ( I am sure it wasnt that easy to do ) and its one of those books that when your not reading it, you thinking about reading it. His analysis and descriptions in a military sense are first rate in that they are descriptive, explained well, and the bias involved is the person described not the authors. It was also totally entertaining bringing out the grief and humour of the men involved, the latter being some times laugh out loud funny. As I am employed in a military museum it has always come in handy to weave something you have read into your interatcions with the public and have found this invaluable when describing comonwealth experiance in korea ( as my museum represents part of 29th brigade, and I was talkinging recently to one of our board members who was there concerning korea)

All in all a great book, written and researched well and I look forward to 1951 ( if there is one comming?) also will be buying his previous work on the strength of this.

Anyone who enjoyed this should read anything by reobert Lyman and vice versa, very similar style

5.0 out of 5 stars hours of fun, 15 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
as a non gigging player who likes to have options to amuse onesself I have always tried to have a multi effects to hand. Owning many through the years I can honestly say that since owning this, I would say this is so far the best. I bought mine second hand on amazon and it didnt come with a manual. there two ways to deal with this, one download a copy ( eventualy) or being a bloke... fiddle with it till it does what you want it to or it goes bang!... well its really simple to use and I was up and running in minutes. I use it straight through the imput and it colours my amp well, the patches are usable and its sounds great. I also keep finding stuff I didnt know about( not having a manual leavs you to be surprised by suddenlly finding there is cabinet as well as amp sim on it. everything is alterable and storable and to be honest I cant stop tinkering with the settings of it. all in all its great fun. HAvent recorded with it but will one day ( it comes with software. ) also the on off ow wah is nice and simple as you press down hard with your toe to activate it and it wont switch off till you apply down again meaning you dont have to think about it. its is better than my old zoom 9gtt to navigate and if I am honest wouldnt swap it back. great fun

The Chief: Douglas Haig and the British Army

5.0 out of 5 stars If you read one bio on haig let it be this one, 27 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this is probably the most balanced bio I have ever read. Sheffield goes out of his way to remain objective throughout this work. He also strives to include oposing veiwpoints from those who disagree with him and the reasons. It seems to have been written by possibly the most reasonable man in the country. It is a brilliant book exposing alot of the misconceptions that still exist pertaining to the war, and haig and the overall strategy. As someone who works in a military museum and constantly have to correct the sweeping generalisations people come up with I found a very useful tool. afterall we do live in a blame culture populated by people who use soundbites as teh truth . it felt more like a explanation than a rehabilitation, like someone setting you straight on some points after they have done all the hard work of investigating the matter, and doing so without ego or agenda.

well balanced, excellently assembled research, and with an excellent pace throughout ( in otherwords It didnt get dry and stuffy) all in all its how a military bio should be written and I look forward to reading more from Mr Sheffield
