I had heard of the MC5, name had crossed my radar over the years.
I heard Kick out the Jams on the radio and guessed about 1977 New York Punk.
Noo 1968! punks had not even been conceived then, well maybe.
A fabulous explosion of rage, a murderous din with a fair bit of psychedelia thrown in maaaan.
Put it on, crank up the volume and piss off the neighbours.
I can imagine Dad in 1968 yelling 'Do you call that music'.
Fabulous. if you like hideous discordant frenzied guitar music.
Brothers and Sisters.
* Herefordshire expression of mind discombobulation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitar music is back, 15 July 2013

I heard a track on radio 6 and figured it was worth a punt.
Great stuff, echo and the bunnymen guitarist and bassist let the remains of their hair down and wig out man.
Proper guitar music with no pretensions and no ponciness. Sounds like three mates making a rock band and enjoying it. One review I read complained about it being to guitarish and like the bad bits of prog rock. It is guitarish, with a hint of the good bits of 'prog if you dont like guitar music dont buy it. if you like this kind of sound buy it and play it loud.
Sounds a bit like how The Edge might sound like if he could rid of his righteous pillock vocalist.

I grew up ignoring this as old hippy cobblers, I was 15 in '77.
ie 50 now. I read Renton and co banging on about it Irvine Walsh's books. So decided to give it a go. 1.44 on Amazon is not pushing the boat out.
Bloody hell. the tracks with Nico being all tragic and Germanic are cool. But 'waiting for my man' and 'Heroin' are amazing. Ninety sixty seven???? Really. Fabulous stuff, revolutionary even.
Think of all the aging Teddy Boys yelling at their kids 'Do you call this music'. Fabulous.
Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far Out maaan, 9 Sep 2011
This review is from: Your Mercury (Audio CD)
Amazing stuff, the good bits of cheesy prog rock with a modern touch.
Play it loud and terrify the neighbours.
Play it at a party and get youreself murdered.
Bits of GYBE and Hawkwind are lurking in there but not plagiarised.
What Mogwai might sound like if they ever got past playing intros.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, a new light on Mercury Rev, 10 Feb 2011
Typical Peel sessions. A good band make a great album of their usual material.
Disc 1 is a bit much, their early albums are good for private consumption, noisy and entertaining.
Disc is a classic. It takes their dark sounding melodic songs and tortures them elegantly, also starts with a great cover of I dont Want to Be A Soldier by John Lennon.
Highly reccomended, makes me wonder what they would be like live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, angry tortured young men are still ranting., 5 Feb 2011

As it says in the title line.
Probably the best band nobody has ever heard of. Dammit whay not?
There is hope for music, angry tortured young men are still ranting, and screaming.
Jesus For the Jugular sounds like a melodic younger Tom Waits losing the plot convincingly, and Pan as well both proper scream fests.
The kind of album youput and people say 'Oh this nice' then half way through they run out of the door in horror.

Finn has marvelous voice that can go from balladry to a feral scream and back again without losing a tune. Note I usually cant stand balladry but I enjoy his version of it.

And so young, lets hope a long career develops.

Chunko'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album, 14 Jan 2011
This review is from: American Supreme (Audio CD)
Strange stuff, two guys who cant sing, and play basic synths, barely any lyrics, mostly repetitions and simple word patterns. But compulsive and rythmic and very very dark. Shows how creativity can be minimalist.
if you get the second bonus album there are some great live tracks on it, you can hear how Alan Vega's lungs have got bigger as he has got fatter.

I bought this on it's original release in 1977, at th time I was listening to Yes and Genesis.
That was the end of that, it turned me onto weird edgy music and my social life went down the pan.
Play this to your mates or family, or even slip it on at a party and watch everybody leave. Frankie Teardrop is just as horrific as I remember it being, the story of a skint newyorker and his family with lines like 'Frankie's got a gun' 'points it at the 6 month old kid in the crib' interspersed with horrific screams as he kills the kid, his wife and himself then ends up burning up in hell. Not nice music but still relevant. Amazingly it has not really dated either.

Massively dissapointed by this album
it seems to be a collection of outtakes and duff live recordings. the radio version of 'Move on up' is an inspiring upbeat beauty of a song. The live version here is a hideously muffled affair recorded live when he was having a bad day.
There are a few decent numbers but the body of the album is a waste of space.
