Buried by overdubbing, 5 Feb 2008
Whatever you do DONT watch this film with the English overdubbing. The surreal qualities of the introductory scenes are unfortunately turned into a poor series of Monty Python sketches by lame overdubbing.
In fact I gave up watching it after twenty minutes.
Then I realised it might be better to watch with the subtitles. At once I got it.
Scenes that had seemed absurdly comic or weak were not.
Something slightly strange was going on, admittedly, but that's the point. Something that has no reason is happening right here in the countryside where you were brought up. You go into it expecting glory and heroics, but there is no such thing. What I thought I was going to see was not what was going to happen, not what I was going to be shown.
The movie is very stark and grim. The overlong camera shots turn out to be painfully poignant. You need to watch it again.
It's a movie I have watched over and over again because its so involving and says things about war that probably no other movie has. If you think war is all about heroics you need to watch this movie.
