Once in a Blue Moon
Once in a Blue Moon
by Simon R. Green
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.65

4.0 out of 5 stars Hawk and Fisher return again., 26 Jan 2014
This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Paperback)
This is the third Hawk and Fisher book set in the Forest Kingdom. A while has passed since they had to flee Haven and in the interim they settled down ... however a dark enemy from their past has returned.
Overall, I enjoyed this book - Mr. Green has easily returned to the easy banter and partnership of the heroes with plenty of new characters providing an interesting back-story. However the book is over 500 plus pages and does then at times to re-hash prior storylines, so style rather than innovation was to the fore. Still a cracking read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Grand Heritage, 1 Jan 2014
This review is from: The Lessons of History (Paperback)
These are a series of articles on history and the interaction with other subjects. The tone is both erudite and conversational, with masters of their trade imparting their nuggets of wisdom at the end of a long career. This is a reprint of an earlier work, so some topics are dated both by speech in this PC world and by their musing on the then present nature of communism. However the lessons gleaned from the broad canvas of human history make it a worthy addition to the historical heritage.

Open Government: Collaboration, Transparency, and Participation in Practice
Open Government: Collaboration, Transparency, and Participation in Practice
by Daniel Lathrop
Edition: Paperback
Price: £15.91

5.0 out of 5 stars Open review, 1 Jan 2014
This is an informative and interesting book, comprising over 30 articles, on how evolving practices in computer IT has impacted the science of government. Of note is how Open Data has interacted with Web 2.0 to provide government agencies with a means to better distribute data both in raw and processed forms to the public within the new social media. Overall a useful overview on the synergy of these two fields.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix, 30 Dec 2013
The author is a commentator on Fox News in the US. Hence, there is a certain preconceived notion of this collection of his articles. However, he comes across as a level headed and articulate advocate of his conservative position. Whilst naturally focused on US affairs, he does make interesting general debating points on marriage, religion, nationhood and how the state/citizen interaction has evolved. Overall an interesting read.

The History of the World: From the Dawn of Humanity to the Modern Age
The History of the World: From the Dawn of Humanity to the Modern Age
by Frank Welsh
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.26

2.0 out of 5 stars Flat world, 30 Dec 2013
Overall was not overly impressed by this.
On the plus side, the author did precisely manage in most cases to compact various topics into digestible chunks.
On the negative, the author had a distinct post-modern view point was not shy in colouring his opinion on various historical events. This is fine if aiming for a magisterial tome, however the prose style was rather staid and prosaic and did not match the lofty author's tone.

Wenger Swissgear GA-7343-06 Cobalt 15.6 Inch Laptop Backpack
Wenger Swissgear GA-7343-06 Cobalt 15.6 Inch Laptop Backpack
Price: £33.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Covered, 3 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this to transport a 13 inch laptop on a daily commute. Hence not as extreme a conditions as some reviewers, but still dicey enough at peak times. I'm pleased with the backpack. As expected there is plenty of room to store auxiliary materials associated with the IT life; USBs, leads, cables etc. The attachments allows them to be stored away neatly in place. The bag material itself can definitely survive the journey as well as random rain-showers. As well, the strap paddings are designed nicely so as to comfortably carry the load. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unionist cable, 3 Nov 2013

This works as specified. Long connection, flexible and fits a Bosch powercord on the mower. If God forbid I cut the cable again, will re-order.

Pedea Case for 13.3 inch Laptop - Brown Global Map

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Covered, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Exactly as specified in that it securely covers a 13.3 Notebook. Physically the material is soft but looks to be resistant to the scraps that it should protect against. As well, the art on the case cover is vibrant and makes an impression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blonde Ambition, 26 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Fifth Estate [DVD] (DVD)
This is an account of the Wikileaks orgnanisation and its founder, based on viewpoint by a former spokesman Daniel Berg.
Julian Assange's personality is done no favours in this, coming across as driven personality who is more comfortable with followers rather than co-equal collaborators. However the film does show the valuable work Assange's WikiLeaks has done in uncovering State secrets, although some of the film's visual methods to conceptualise the workings of the site do not translate well to the visual media. Cumberbatch delivers an excellent performance. Overall, worth viewing especially in light of the continuing NSA Scandals.

This is a review 12 months from buying this product. Part of the delay is that one does not notice the cover - in that it is hard wearing, durable and performs its task exactly as specced.
