Always I Am Caesar
Always I Am Caesar
by W. Jeffrey Tatum
Edition: Paperback
Price: £22.99

4.0 out of 5 stars I came, I saw, I reviewed, 14 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Always I Am Caesar (Paperback)
This book derives from a series of lectures by the book's author. In it he mentions the concept of an "Oxford Sandwich":two slices of praise with a filling of critique.
So being lecture based, it style is free flowing and the writer puts forward his case for the unique position of Caesar in world history in a very accessible manner.
However, a number of issues are:
- This book will not age well, given the number of snipes against the 43rd President of the USA.
- To try and rehabilitate Mark Anthony as an educated man who attempted to re-set the res publica: given his treatment of Cicero, this is poorly supported by the evidence.
- The author tries to use a counter-factual scenario, to show that the Roman republic could be saved. However, given the stresses and strains of the world power that Rome had become, this was unlikely.
Apart from these issues, he does shine in his interpretation of other issues, such as the famous "Et tu, Brute"quote.

Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles)
Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles)
by Kevin Hearne
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Ceart go leor, 15 Aug. 2011
Overall an average urban fantasy read.
Pluses: As per the title, the interesting concept of a 2100 year Celtic druid, Atticus, is fresh and brings a different perspective into a genre full of Vampires and werewolves (who do make an appearance). The author has a good grasp of plot pacing; the secondary character of the Druid's hound,Oberon, is wonderful especially their interaction and finally the ending lead nicely up to a continuation of the series.
Negatives: The 2100 year Celtic druid. After this amount of time on the planet, he would surely act with more wisdom, craftiness and compassion (see Ambulance scene) than his outward age of 21 years he appears to be. It is a case of hack and slay first, think after and when comparing with the Doyen of magically types, Mr. Dresden, he comes off a distant second best.

There is a second book to this, and the writing did improve as the book progressed so I'd tentatively recommend.

The Wild Side (Baen Fantasy)
The Wild Side (Baen Fantasy)
by Tanya Huff
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.50

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag, 7 Aug. 2011
Overall a fairly average selection of short storys. Whilst the stock fantasy characters are present, there is
sadly little spark to be worthy of any "Edge" in some and others "Careless of the Night " are a tad amateurish.
If not for the stories from Toni L.P. Kelner & Ticia Drake Isom, I'd say pass on this collection. However for the price it might be worth taking a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Team MHI FTW, 7 Aug. 2011
If you enjoying reading about guns and gore, this is fairly well corners the market. It is the third book in the series. It focuses on the story of the MHI leader, Earl Harbringer. Earl's back-story is provided via flashbacks which merges into the overriding series arc and a new adventure set in winter Michigan (a place I shall never now visit due to the cold). It at times seems a tad similar to "30 days of night", but here instead the townsfolk use assault rifles. It also features Stalin's favourite werewolf Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Das Wunder, 18 Jun. 2011
This review is from: The Miracle Of Bern [DVD] (DVD)
I am not a major football plan, and the main reason that I bought this film was to improve my German. Saying that, I was captivated by the three main story threads running through this marvellous film and how they intersected at Bern during the 1954 World Cup. Excellent football drama about how a team gelled together, with a little help from screw-on studs, though perhaps a tad too clichéd at the end. Overall excellent.

German-English Bilingual Visual Dictionary (DK Bilingual Dictionaries)
German-English Bilingual Visual Dictionary (DK Bilingual Dictionaries)
by Dk
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Nützlich, 17 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this useful overall.
On the positive side the book groups related terms together in a well structured manner with in the most part clear images which readily link the concept with the German word.
However, this seems to be a generic visual dictionary in that the pictures are rarely specific to the German context, for instance the emergency services section is clearly US based, and also the poorly-sourced images associated with the legal section seem non-civil law based.
Apart from those quibbles, a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Six months on, 1 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Six months on after purchasing this, I'm very pleased with the continuing cover it provides my kindle. I commute to work and the case takes the usual jolts and jostles in its stride. The colour, stitching and general material show only minimum wear and tear. Plus the balancing stand is very steady on a train's table.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith endures, 30 May 2011
This review is from: The Rage Against God (Paperback)
This is not so much an apologist's manual, as a descriptive memoir of how the author Peter Hitchens gradually regained his religious faith on a mature consideration of the support such faith provides not only him but society at large.
The most telling aspects of this are in his experiences in Cold War Russia, on how a society devoid of the kindness of religious impulses shrivels to a husk, with official state doctrine proving a cold comfort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly purrfect, 30 May 2011
Overall I enjoyed this collection of short stories.
Apart from a minor quibble about the pacing of one "Regency Sprite", I found them to be an enjoyable mix of drama, with strong doses of humour with a number of twists. My favourite story would be "Jack", with its style reminisant of Poul Anderson writing of Northern warriors. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hit the mark with customers, 22 May 2011
The authors start with a failure, specifically an early project of theirs. The lesson drawn was too much time was spent on designing the uber-website and not enough time addressing and maintaining customer interest.
Due to this hard won experience and latter projects the authors have compiled a set of guidelines to make the standard commercial website more amenable to the average purchaser.
I found the writing clear and informative, with real world application to designers and business owners looking to optimize their web presence.
