When wearing such eye-protection for extended periods, it is important that it does not chafe. These provide a snug and comfortable level of wear.

Borkowski's Textbook on Roman Law
Borkowski's Textbook on Roman Law
by Paul J. du Plessis
Edition: Paperback
Price: £30.03

5.0 out of 5 stars Bona Ius, 21 Oct 2014
This provides an excellent overview of Roman law. The book traces the development from Republic to Empire and how various trends had shaped the law. The chapters give both context and breakdown of the topics; family, commercial etc. These are further explored in greater depth with primary source material linked to the author's interpretation. Given the current growth of EU law which traces its civil roots to the Ius Commue of Rome the study of this provides a framework for study of the current law.

This is a series of articles originated published in a newspaper. Thus there is a fun light tone which makes the lessons easy to digest. Furthermore there is emphasis on the historical context and how the Romans lived their lives, thus making it easier to make connections to the Latin language. Thus overall a good introduction to provide a good grounding for learning the language.

The positive: The author has an excellent style and draws the atmosphere of the period well, The plot itself is enmeshed in the Regency politics and has the reader guessing till the end. However the negative is the central character. It is not that he rather aloof and perhaps has the air of a tormented Mr. Darcy - it is that he comes from the wrong century. The author has imbued him, perhaps hoping to appease selective portions of the readership, with a societal and political outlook which would not be out of place in a Guardian subscriber, but this continuous anachronistic streak is out of place of Regency England. I'd probably read the next in the series due the the author's skill, but would not read a third if the same issues persist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powering ahead., 18 Sep 2014
Working fine after 6 months in. The actual build seems flimsy but still endures. The Solar power feature is enough to keep the clock in operation and the wind up provides a radio diversion with minimum effort.

Binding Corporate Rules: Corporate Self-Regulation of Global Data Transfers
Binding Corporate Rules: Corporate Self-Regulation of Global Data Transfers
by Lokke Moerel
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £91.32

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible data access, 18 Sep 2014
This has as its core the rules that cover corporate compliance when dealing with data transfer. It focuses on the EU data protection directive and the mooted regulation that is to replace it. However it brings in enough material that adequately covers other jurisdictions. The author writes in an academic style (plenty of foot notes) but as well gives her opinion in a sound manner and places this within a practical business context which is where the data is processed. Given the importance of how data protection and privacy have in today's commercial and IT sectors with the advent of Big Data and Cloud computing, a recommended book to get to grips with the subject.

Lincoln's Code: The Laws of War in American History
Lincoln's Code: The Laws of War in American History
by John Fabian Witt
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.98

4.0 out of 5 stars Which laws in time of war that are silent, 18 Aug 2014
This is an exceptionally well written book on the development of US laws in times of war. The author gives the background details on how the US nature of law and military matters interacted from the times of the Revolutionary Wars, 1812, the Mexican War and various Indian conflicts. He portraits in a vivid manner the personalities involved as well the international situation of a young republic insisting on the primacy of rules in law so as to protect its standing from the powerful empires of Old Europe. One such person Francis Lieber who was a key architect of code of military conduct is of special interest showing how his doctrine developed over the course of the US Civil war.
The drawbacks of this book are few, but still distract somewhat from its main premise. First the author being American tilts very much towards the US interpretation of his and thus events of say the 1812 where the US navy had launched attacks on British vessels or their Government basically attempted an territorial land grab Canada are not explored. Second, the author attempts to uphold the primacy of international law as a means to provide a rulebook in disputes. However in cases such as the Trent boarding, this seems to be stretch too far and the author is far too retrospectively forgiving of the US State for placing fast and lose with international law.
In summary an excellent book on the development of Military Law.

5.0 out of 5 stars A balanced and fair overview., 3 Aug 2014
This topic is very much in the news. The author provides a historical (from Ottoman and British eras) and balanced account of how this conflict developed and why the various parties have acted as they have; both due internal pressures and influences from neighbouring states and as after effects of the cold war. Thus the book can act as a resource to understand issues involved.

Transhuman and Subhuman: Essays on Science Fiction and Awful Truth
Transhuman and Subhuman: Essays on Science Fiction and Awful Truth
Price: £3.08

5.0 out of 5 stars A humane collection of Writing essays, 2 Aug 2014
These are a collection of edited essays based on the SciFi author John Wright's blog. Mr. Wright's fiction has a tone that is innovative but yet grounded in an almost Victorian style of expression, and this same gravitas is replicated ,with a noted exception, here. That would be his hilarious mocking review of the second Hobbit film, expressing how both overuse of CGI and a lack of knowledge of projectile weapons can reduce grown men to tears. His more serious pieces deal with the current state of the SciFi publishing industry and how the current vogue for message fiction might prove a disservice for readers. Overall an excellent read.
