5.0 out of 5 stars A Funky Return, 5 May 2012

At the close of 1987 dance music and the sound of Stock/Aitken/Waterman were dominating the charts. With a whole host of new groups emerging on the pop landscape it looked like Five Star's reign of success was about to come to an end as each single released was met with diminishing returns. A new sound and image was needed to re-invigorate the group and to win over new fans.

Five Star collaborated with Leon Sylvers III on this release and he furnished the group with a harder edged funk sound which is displayed on the hits "Another Weekend" & "Rock My World". As the group were winning favorable reviews from the critics it was the music buying public that was shocked and possibly alienated from the dramatic image displayed in their videos and cover art. The group struggled to gain the success of the previous three platinum albums and by the third single, the brilliant Deniece Pearson penned "There's A Brand New World" their top 40 chart run was over. It's a shame as this album is one of their best. The should've been single "Godsend" is a highlight and the Doris Pearson composition "Someone's in Love" shows great variety. It's an album with no filler than can be listened to from start to finish.

This re-mastered album includes the original ten track album and remixes of the five singles released. It also includes one of their best singles "With Every Heartbeat" and "Something About My Baby" which were both featured on the 1989 album "Greatest Hits". The packaging and liner notes are great and it is a must for every Five Star fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read Between The Lines, 1 May 2012

By 1987, the casual music fan could not turn on the TV without seeing a Five Star video or performance. If you listened to the radio, their latest top ten hit would be on heavy rotation and you couldn't open up a newspaper or magazine without reading a feature or interview on this successful group. After a string of big hits from their first two platinum albums, a Brit award and two sold out tours, expectations were high for this third album.

This collection of songs seemed to be created with American radio in mind however, "Between The Lines" failed to deliver the hits that would build on the success of their previous work. The lead single, "Whenever You're Ready" sounded light weight and lacked charm in comparison to the quality of the other hits. The album does however feature some hidden gems with impressive vocal performances. The harder edged "Read Between The Lines" and the soul-funk brilliance of "Knock Twice" are the best tracks. "Ain't Watcha Do" should have been a single instead of the saccharin "Somewhere Somebody" which brought their impressive run of top twenty hits to an end. The album also showcased Deniece Pearson's great songwriting and her growing confidence as a singer.

This Cherry Pop re-issue is everything you would want if you loved the album back in the eighties. The artwork and liner notes are a huge improvement on the labels previous Five Star releases and the sound is clearer than the original pressing. Five Star produced better work before and after this release but it is still a solid album worth having.

Cherry Red (Pop) have unleashed another classic album originally released in 1985. The sound quality of the tracks is excellent, the music content including the remixes and the b-side "Love Games" is brilliant and the detailed discography is an added bonus. The reproduction of the artwork is poor but this is a minor quibble. Cherry Pop should try to secure the rights of other gems from this group like "Between The Lines" and "Rock The World". I'll be first in line if they do.

Cherry Pop have done it again. This recording finally gets a cd re-release and the sound quality is excellent. With detailed liner notes including photos and a detailed discography it is a must have for any fan of 80's Pop and R&B. Many remember her hit "Roses" but there is plenty more on offer here on this album which was first released in 1986. This label have released great re-issues such as Princess' self titled album and I hope they unearth many more classics.
