4.0 out of 5 stars going down slow, 11 Jan 2013
when i was a young grammar school kid of about 12 or 13 in 1964/65 completely in the grip of mod and everything happening in the music and youth culture of the time,i asked one of the coolest mod type 5th formers what he thought was the best record record at the moment.expecting him to suggest a stones, animals, pretty things, kinks, who or maybe yardbirds tune,he took my question seriously thought for what seemed like several minutes and replied smokestack lightning howlin wolf..who?what?was it a group called smokestack or howlin wolf,i had no idea,. but if mac sadowski(that was his name)said it was good that was all i needed to know, anyway saturday i was straight down to sloughs best record shop in the indoor market i think it was called daves(im really getting into this memory now)all the mods of the area would be there on saturdays.snd found an ep with a rocking chair on the cover by howlin wolf featuring the song.i couldnt believe what i was hearing when i got home and played it.unlike anything id ever heard,it grooved it rocked the haunting atmosphere of its sound actually scared me. totally and utterly brilliant.as is virtually everythinc the wolfman has ever done, however on that ep were 2 songs, going down slow and youll be mine(ripped off by narc bolan and called jeepster)that were just as great, but dont seem to be on this. so how is it called complete masters with these omissions.howlin wolf is a god and i will be eternally grateful to mac.

Dvd ~ Johnny Depp

4.0 out of 5 stars one thing lets it down, 27 Aug 2011
i love slow moving american films like last picture show, paris texas, badlands.where you can really get into the characters, and just about all of them are great in this film especially,as every one else has pointed out, leonardos.but johnny depps gives one of his great understated performances, and i can never resist juliette lewis charm.its an endearing film just as all the other positive reviews here say.only one thing spoils it,....the soundtrack is rotten like richard clayderman or something.when what it could have done with ry cooder.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best, best of album ever, 31 Dec 2010
JAMC could arguably be the best british group of the last 25 years, and never understand is one of the greatest singles of all time.the sound of 40 years of rock and pop fed through the velvets, beach boys, ramones, spector into a shuddering cathedral of feedback reverberation.they took the genre into another dimension, and i loved it.over the following years i bought just about everything they released, and they very rarely disappointed.this best of is a great compilation, featuring some cracking B-sides like the fantastic, kill surf city, and lp tracks like the awesome 9 million rainy days.if youve never heard JAMC and you buy this i envy you,it'd be great to discover a group this good all over again.

2.0 out of 5 stars mainstream disappointment, 30 Dec 2010
This review is from: Infinite Arms (Audio CD)
i really liked the cranging guitars and gothic shudder of the first two lps,the vocals had a kind of distant otherness, the whole thing floating on a sea of reverb.its a sound im rather partial to.so i got this one out of the library,i guess hoping for more of the same.im afraid its a disappointment to me,they seem to have gone a bit mainstream the overall sound has lost its mystery, and is a fairly rock ordinary, the songs have slightly fussier arrangements but are just bland in the end, maybe they are chasing that homogenized world of rock radio.hoping for bigger success.theyre not the first group to go this way,and good luck to them, maybe mega stardom awaits. ive lost plenty of groups to mainstream popular recognition.so i'll just stick with the first two lps.

5.0 out of 5 stars the greatest accoustic music ever recorded, 20 Dec 2008
this LP has been with me since the late 60s,and its beautful, pastoral blend of trad/folk/blues even almost classical at times is never anything less than magnificent.i think its the best john fahey LP and i love most all of them.it was background music at my wedding and when i finally turn up my toes,i want it played at my funeral.sometimes i think its my favourite album of all time, and believe me thats some claim from a music obsessive like me.

1.0 out of 5 stars overrated novelty album, 16 Sep 2008
when i was a boy, hitting my teens in the sixties, you were as the cliche goes.beatles or stones, and i was very much with the latter. from the beginning the beatles always had novelty songs, and maybe george martin is to blame,(he did produce the goons after all)i mean ;til there was you, taste of honey, michelle, penny lane.....etc,etc.even their best lp is spoilt by yellow submarine.but by the time they got to this one, well you could blame macartney or martin or maybe they just took the wrong acid.but it is,apart from one song(you can guess which one) one massive overrated novelty album.the stones got slaughtered for satanic majesties, but not this pile of old tutt.afterwards they came out with classics like ob la di and octopus garden.so for me the beatles were great when they were rockin in the early days,i saw her standing there, twist and shout and that sort of stuff, also the powerpop of ticket to ride, hard days night and that sort of stuff.but in my life they dont come close to the stones or plenty of other groups to many to mention.if its an lp from 67 you want, buy velvet underground with nico.end of story.
