3.0 out of 5 stars Better than average vampire movie, 12 Jun. 2008
This review is from: 30 Days Of Night [DVD] (DVD)
A well-realised, reasonably entertaining take on the vampire movie. The inhabitants of an Alaskan town that has 30 days without sunlight during each winter are attacked by a group of ruthless vampires. The sheriff (Hartnett) and his estranged wife try to lead the few survivors to safety.
First the vampires: they are not the wise-cracking type from Buffy, or the almost-human type from Supernatural or the suave sophisticated type from Blood Ties. They are very physical, very animal-like, and quite scary, with elongated, emaciated faces. However, their leader does not share these facial characteristics. He is the one weak link in the film and it would have been better without his occasional efforts at philosophical commentary.
Now the townsfolk: the acting is understated rather than wooden as suggested by another reviewer. There is a realistic feeling that they are numbed by their inability to comprehend the extreme things suddenly happening to them. Hartnett does a competent job as the ordinary chap forced into leadership in extraordinary circumstances.
The scariest thing is the darkness, as it should be. There is a menacing atmosphere even before the vampires get their teeth into things. (!)
And as for the ending, well, I won't give anything away, but it's chilling.
If you like this sort of movie, this is a better than average example.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, moving and visually stunning, 16 May 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You may have seen a famous clip from this film, with a giant moving staircase leading up to heaven past monolithic statues. It's breathtaking, but you must see the whole film! Niven is brilliant as a stiff-upper-lipped pilot chappie who literally jumps from a plane without a parachute, falls in love and ends up pleading his case to continue living in front of the heavenly powers that be. The 'action' shuttles seamlessly between earth and heaven and colour and black and white photography. The soundtrack is powerful. One of the best films ever made.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather dull, 9 May 2008
This review is from: The Dark Is Rising [DVD] (DVD)
I like a good fantasy movie but this isn't one. The plot involves an American (why?) boy living in England who must 'seek' a series of magical objects to stop the Dark from taking over from the Light. His home life is complicated as he is one of several children (I won't say how many exactly as the number's important). This has potential but it is never realised as we are plunged into the boringly repetitive recovery of the objects interspersed with images of Christopher Eccleston (the Dark) glowering unconvincingly on a horse. Mr Eccleston was obviously having an off day (or several) - he is quite the least scary baddie I've ever seen. Don't expect Harry Potter or even Eragon. You will be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A return to form, 9 May 2008
I thought seasons 7-10 of Stargate SG1 were a bit of a disappointment, quite frankly. But this film was actually very good. Lots of team interaction and humour, plenty of action, and it tied up all those flying loose ends. No O'Neill, but for once he wasn't missed. I am so looking foward to Continuum now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth watching to the end, 9 May 2008
This review is from: The Fountain [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
Ignore reviews by people who haven't seen this to the end. I wondered for the first half hour whether I would switch off, mentally or even literally. It was not what I expected. But I am so glad I stuck with it because this really is a thought-provoking and moving film. It's a shame it's promoted as sci-fi because that creates the wrong expectations in a lot of people.
Without giving anything much away, Jackman is a scientist on a quest to defeat death but he has a lot to learn. The acting is convincing. Actors like Weicz and Jackman don't need to take on rubbish scripts, so trust that it will be worth the watching. Someone said this movie's a bit like a poem. It is. A very beautiful poem. Watch it properly and I dare you not to be moved.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing on TV, 9 May 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Supernatural is the best thing on TV at the moment. It is well scripted, imaginative, intelligent, brilliantly acted (especially Jensen Ackles)and it has very high production values. They also manage to inject a lot of humour into the otherwise quite dark storylines. Fabulous soundtrack too. The production team says that in every episode they're making a little movie, and I would have to agree. I own seasons 1 and 2 already and they are some of my most often watched DVDs. I have pre-ordered season 3.
