Actually, a very humane & kindly book, 13 Feb. 2009
I enjoyed this short, sweet book. Sir Michael's story of his childhood & his war in Italy, where he won an MC, is deeply engaging. His oftentimes cryptic account of how he came out of the closet are of interest too. Once this part of the book is over, though, it goes off the boil. I would have liked to learn more about Sir Michael's scholarship -- how he went about writing his books, what he enjoyed (or didn't enjoy) about doing archival research, and the like. All this aside, I recommend this highly. It is a fine work by an outstanding scholar.
