5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric faithful film version, 14 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you've read and enjoyed the book then you will not be disappointed by the film version. It is faithful to the story and maintains that wonderful laid back feel. The characterisations, the scenery, and even the dialogue complement each other perfectly. Don't be put off by the subtitles with the Swedish audio track. This has to be the way to fully appreciate this film. The actress playing Lisbeth is brilliant and fitted my mental image of the character perfectly. I cannot imagine any other actress in the proposed Hollywood version doing equal justice to the role. I think that this is a perfect first part to the trilogy which I believe will grow in stature as it progresses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Capital Entertainment, 5 Feb. 2011
This review is from: Rivers of London (Hardcover)
A great mix of humour, folklore, thrills, wizardry, mystery and good old-fashioned police detection. Oh and throw in some great characters and atmospheric settings and this book has everything.
Although firmly in the 'urban fantasy' genre the excellent plot is believable enough to be enjoyable at a more grounded level. A real page-turner. Enjoy!

A Dip in the Ocean: Rowing Solo Across the Indian

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 31 Jan. 2011
When you read Sarah's account of her incredible feat of endurance you will be truly in awe. This young woman took on the southern India Ocean on her own, in a tiny boat, with no possibility of rescue, and she triumphed. Any superlatives that might be applied to describe this epic endeavour seem totally inadequate. The story is superbly written and the reader very soon feels involved in the adventure (albeit in slightly more comfortable and stable environment). The book is enthralling, entertaining and inspirational and will transport you to a special place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain Gem, 26 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This a fantastic bargain. In my opinion the best written TV Comedy series ever...bar none. Bob and Terry's conversations are so cleverly structured, so full of character, so funny. Every line is crafted superbly. Example: 'It's never not full in here, it's never not full' Isn't that more interesting than the normal expression. That fine attention to detail is applied throughout every episode. You are not necessarily aware of this but it lends a measure of authenticity to the whole proceedings.
A 6 disc set for such a low price makes this a must for every comedy lovers collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning, 25 Jan. 2011
Not critically acclaimed when it was released but so what? This is a a very entertaining film and is visually stunning. The quality of the special effects and action sequences is surprisingly good considering the film's vintage. It certainly stands up well against anything that has followed. Mr Diesel is not everybody's cup of tea but please don't let that put you off. He is absolutely right for this role and by the end of the film you cannot imagine anyone else playing it. The story has enough twists and turns to maintain the interest from start to end. Oh, and by the way, although this is the second Riddick film it is not necessary to watch Pitch Black first since the films are pretty much stand-alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true Classic, 24 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Doolittle (Audio CD)
This was my first exposure to the Pixies and I was blown away. The relentless progression of rocking songs is like being pinned in the corner of the ring taking a succession of jabs to the head. Just listen to these: Debasser, Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, There Goes my Gun, and the superb Here Comes Your Man. Some of the other tracks are harder to immediately like (but grow on you after a few listens) but do serve to illustrate the fearless range of the Pixies, from melodic pop to manic screech. These guys are committed unpretentious rockers and you gotta love them for it and play it loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly brilliant, 23 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Trouble In Shangri-La (Audio CD)
If you missed this album when it first came out (as I did) then I urge to you to discover it now. It is quite simply brilliant. Every track is stunning in its own way. From the moody 'Every Day' to the soaring 'Planets of the Universe', these tracks show off Stevie's talents for song writing, her unique vocal style and originality. It really is a little known classic. Her very best work in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly awesome, 23 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Crime Of The Century (Audio CD)
I loved this from the time I first bought the vinyl LP and played it to destruction on a Dansette in my bedroom. I loved it when it was the only cassette in the car and accompanied me on journeys to and from campus. I loved it when it was the first CD I bought and I could suddenly hear the true depth of the work. I loved it when I transferred it onto my new 128Mb MP3 player. And hey, guess what, I still love it. This album has been a soundtrack to my life.
I cannot put into words how majestic, beautiful, uplifting and wonderful this is. If you have never heard this album then I urge you to give it go. But you must give it your full attention and listen to it in its entirety in one sitting to fully appreciate it. I promise that you will not be disappointed. This is not an album comprising a couple of hit singles and not a lot else.
This is an underrated classic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Requires endurance, 23 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Under the Dome (Paperback)
At 900 pages the size of this book was daunting. Still the concept seemed interesting and with the author's reputation to consider I thought it would be worth giving it a go. However, after a 100 pages I gave up. I found it hard to read and frustratingly slow-paced. I also found that I had no sympathy for any of the many characters, certainly not enough to invest many more hours in discovering their fate.
I think it could have benefited with some drastic editing to maybe half the size. I would say only consider this if you are a quick reader and have lots of time on your hands.
