2.0 out of 5 stars

I was seduced by the number of 5 star reviews that have been given to this novel. I'm afraid that I did not find it at all 'spellbinding', 'gripping' or any of the other hyperbole used to describe it. However I will freely admit that I did not finish the book, so maybe those delights were yet to come. I'm afraid that after a couple of hours reading I found that my patience had run out.
I found the fact that the entire story being told in flashback removed a fundamental tension from the story. We know she makes it. With that element of uncertainty removed then interest needs to be maintained by her experiences and how she is affected by them. But even this is revealed right at the beginning ('not very well' seems to be the unsurprising answer). The action sequences (if I can call them that) were comic-strip in their execution and dialogue, presented in a superficial and unconvincing manner.
Maybe I'm being too harsh in my criticism, but I feel that I ought to add some balance to the euphoria expressed at the other extreme of this rating table (although I imagine that you will choose to believe those reviews rather than this downbeat offering) If, like me, you are searching for that breath-taking, jaw-dropping, seat-edging, unputdownable novel then you may well be tempted like I was. I really wanted to be impressed, but It didn't work for me.
