5.0 out of 5 stars Notable debut, 28 Sept. 2006
This review is from: Costello Music (Audio CD)
After the success of the insanely catchy Chelsea Dagger, The Fratellis have gripped the nation with their minimalistic riffs and shouty choruses. Examples of this include the singles Henrietta, Chelsea Dagger and Creepin' Up The Backstairs. While the tempo is slowed to good effect on tracks like Whistle For The Choir and Ole Black n' Blue Eyes. Like the album cover the lyrics are entertainingly retro and a hark back to pre-indie rock guitars. Buy this album, everyone has or will do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smashing debut, 16 Jun. 2006
This review is from: With Love And Squalor (Audio CD)
While not divulging in the same enthusiasm as other reviewers, We Are Scientists have made an essentially 'pop' album. Every song contains a catchy riff and their music can appeal to a wide audience. What's more, With Love and Squalor is in my opinion a massive improvement on their self released EPs and the trio have a sense of humour to boot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing follow up, 17 April 2006
This review is from: Brassbound (Audio CD)
While Over The Counter Culture was sublime, the pace is slowed and the brass is tuned up even more for Brassbound. There are a few catchy songs here, notably the now over played Boys Will Be Boys, the now forgotten Life Will Be The Death Of Me, the highlight of the record, Rudi's In Love and A Call To Arms. For me the album doesn't really compare with the debut album but for lovers of ska and mod type music this album does it better than any other out there and lyrically it strikes a chord with a certain section of society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massively underrated album, 17 April 2006
The Ordinary Boys may no longer be alternative cool after singer Preston's appearance on Celebrity Big Brother, but there's no denying the sheer quality of this album. The music press may refuse to acknowledge just how much talent pours out of this album but of all the user's review I've read there have been few who have found faults. Forget Stars of CCTV, forget the Arctic Monkeys, this album was quintessentially British and brilliant 2 years before all of those. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes rock or indie music and unlike most musicians, The Ordinary Boys have none of the mystique and are just down to earth, nice people.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tragic, 17 Feb. 2006
Not as exhilarating or stylish in my opinion as Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance has a infinitely more tragic storyline to it. By the end all the central characters have had their lives ended unceremoniously. Watching this film not only churns your stomach but leaves you emotionally depressed. However as something for entertainment it is not as easily engaging as Oldboy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, 30 Dec. 2005
This review is from: Capture / Release (Audio CD)
They've really grown on me. The first song I heard of theirs was 22 Grand Job and I thought that it was too brisk and not in depth enough. But since hearing the rest of the album I think they are brilliant. They reflect perfectly for me the music scene at the moment and I'm sure they will be pivotal in the continued resurgence of British guitar music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sign of things to come, 30 Dec. 2005
This review is from: Stars of CCTV (Audio CD)
For me Stars Of CCTV is not the finished article, but it a sign of things to come from this band who I predict will be the next big seller in the UK. I think Hard-Fi's lyrics definitely identifies strongly with a section of British society, songs like Cash Machine, Living For The Weekend etc. are like a rocked up version of The Streets. Whilst there's also songs about subject matter everyone can relate to, like a broken relationship in Better Do Better and politically charged songs like Middle Eastern Holiday. It may not be to everyone's tastes but it's a good piece of work all the same.
