4.0 out of 5 stars Classic romance, 17 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Sabrina [1995] [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Any movie with Harrison Ford in it is sure to be a hit, and this is no exception. Ford plays a seemingly callous businessman who as the story develops, grows more and more endearing. Together with Julia Ormond who plays her role elegantly and sweetly, they bring an element of classic romance to this beautifully directed modern-day fairytale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming, 17 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Il Postino [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
Massimo Troisi is irresistible as the postman who delivers letters to the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in a small but beautiful island in Italy. He is so natural and charming in his role that you forget he is acting. His hesitation, his stuttering, his quiet and simple demeanour, all merge to create a character who is totally believable and utterly lovable.

The entire cast do a great job, but it is Troisi who steals the show. What makes the film even more poignant is that Troisi died only two days after filming ended due to heart failure. The memory of his greatness as an actor will live on in this heart-warming masterpiece of friendship and poetic reverence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, 17 Aug. 2006

This review is from: Only You [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
This is the nicest romcom you are likely to see. It's wonderfully romantic, very funny, endearing to the final scene, and set in some of the most beautiful locations in Italy. Marisa Tomei does a great job, Robert Downey even better, and the on-screen chemistry is present throughout. Billy Zane's hilarious brief appearance alone makes this movie worth a watch. The plot is simple yet unexpected and will have you glued to your seat till the very end. Brilliant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Offbeat, 17 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Jamón, Jamón [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
This is not your average run of the mill love story. It's an offbeat, somewhat excessive plot; a sort of love triangle but involving more than three people, all of whom are driven by lust and greed and seem to have no real control over their lives. If there is a message within the story, it is not glaringly obvious but it does make a mockery of love and highlights the fickleness of human nature, irrespective of age or experience. On the whole I found the film to be a little too contrived for my liking and the ending was rather elusive but overall it's worth a watch, if only to see angry Spaniards hitting each other with legs of ham.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny, 10 Aug. 2003
This has to be one of the funniest pieces of literature I have ever read. The set-up is so ridiculous and the characters so excessive that you cannot help but laugh out loud at the fiasco that ensues when there is a power cut on a very important evening of a young artist’s life. I love how Shaffer has created a situation which gets increasingly out of hand as the evening progresses, and has all of this take place in complete darkness (which you would have to imagine were you to see it on stage because the darkness is actually replaced with light!). Very clever, very funny. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who's ever been in love, 10 Aug. 2003
Though I did not find this as compelling as The Alchemist, the story of Pilar and her inner conflict with the notion of love highlights universal emotions which anyone who has ever been in love can relate to. Coelho's story-telling technique is simple in prose but conveys a deeper message which may at times be difficult to grasp. I think a re-read is always a good idea as there are subtleties in his message which may not be picked up on straight away. But this shouldn't put the reader off, as it is a relatively short story and easy to read. It is a story of hope, written intelligently by someone who seems to have figured out what a lot of us are trying to find answers for.
