Cold Comfort Farm (Penguin Classics)
Cold Comfort Farm (Penguin Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars As good to day as when I first read it, 22 Feb 2014

This is one of the rare books that make me laugh out loud. Despite being very much set in the 30s it is remarkably modern and it heroine Flora Post a wonderful no nonsense, down to earth fixer, who could appear in any modern novel. Pity that it runs out of steam at the end and that it gets a bit sappy.

This is still the best ground coffee I have found.. you can make it really strong and it is never bitter. Normally only available in Germany and Luxembourg great that Amazon now stocks it.

Very good of its kind. The characters are well drawn and engaging and the world is believable. You want to know what happens next

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not ultimately satisfying, 30 Nov 2013

The Fact this this is a real story made it very interesting and I learnt a lot about Venice and 18thC Venetian society but the letters we a bit repetative and sometime just not very interesting to read. It might be better in the original Italian.

I am an avid fan of Jasper Fforde's. His alternative universe takes a little getting use to, but it is totally believable and internally consistent with well drawn characters and very funny - brilliant !

A good read but not well written. Sometimes i had to read some sentences several times to make any sense of them. Also very repetitive,

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely rivetting, 13 Mar 2013

I could not put this book down. Told from the point of view of Australian 2 sisters who volunteered as nurses in the 1st world war firstly as nurses on board a hospital ship at Gallipoli and then in France behind the Western front, it gave a new slant on the familiar theme of the monumental waste of young lives that was the First World War. It was incredible that the Australians volunteered and kept on going back without conscription. A medical friend of mine found the medical side of it jarred but it did not bother me. The only thing was that I found the "choice" of alternative endings slightly irritating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable but nothing special, 13 Mar 2013

This review is from: Clay (Kindle Edition)
Well written if a little on the derivative side. I found the nature descriptions overlong, sometimes irrelevant and tended to skip them. The characters of TC, Sophia and Joseph were sufficiently engaging for me to want to know what happened to them but the story went nowhere and stopped rather than coming to an end. Linda and Daisy were particularly unattractive and it was hard to imagine that they were related to Sophia. But it has all been done before the displaced Polish man trying to survive in urban Britain, the neglected child living in his own world. etc etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tom Tom GO 740 Sat Nav, 13 Feb 2009
As a great beleiever in map reading (at which I am particularly good) I am quite resistant to these machines, and this one was bought as a present for my husband (boys and toys etc) Howver as they go, it is a good machine, it is highly portable, easy to remove from the car and the directions are clear. It is particularly helpful to have the distance to the next instruction clearly marked on the visual map with a diminishing distance indicator as you approach the turn. Our previous model said unhelpful things like 250 m. to.... and if, like me, you have no concept of what 250m is and are faced with several turns before you get there, you find yourself turning too soon or too late.
The speed indicator is also very good, and most of the time, accurate as it turns red you when you exceed the speed limit. I cant at the moment work out how to turn it from kph to mph which is irritating but not vital.
Not so good is the feature for notifying the system of mistakes, particularly speed cameras they have not recorded it is complicated to do and requires several steps, dangerous while actually driving, and usually you are long past the spot by the time you have managed it.
