How to treat your kids like a you've had a lobotomy, 16 Nov. 2010
Given that this book is highly recommended by mumsnetters and their ilk, I couldn't believe how irritating it was.
First, it's written in American English - make sure you're prepared for this before you buy it. I have never 'hollerred' at my kids, nor have they complained about being "dumb" or wearing "braces".
As for the content of the book - it's incredibly irritating and over-earnest. It advocates that you talk to your children in the kind of robotic un-speak that HR departments recommend for dealing with errant employees. "I hear where you're coming from..."
You'll find more parenting wisdom in Philip Larkin's "This Be The Verse".
