5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, 28 May 2013

Having been a fan of Rinko Kawauchi for quite a few years now and already owning three of her books, I had the pleasure of coming upon this book at the Tate gallery shop and it made my heart skip a beat. Sumptuously presented. Right down to the paper, the details are not compromised.... The paper covering the hardback, opens into a double sided poster, each page is folded before binding onto which is printed a corresponding negative of the image on the main page... each of the images convey the particular mood that is prevalent within Kawauchi's photography.... I just can't help but look through this book and I feel like I am transported to dream like landscapes that only her photographs can convey.

I bought this book primarily to learn the basics of illustrator technical flat production, when infact its just a book of technical flats but does not show you how to make them - albeit a very very very basic overview - it skips so many important aspects, infact anyone buying this book to learn illustrator look away now and buy the Kevin Tallon book of creative design with illustrator - this book is merely a compilation of already made up specs and im pretty certain that once you can use illustrator you can build your own from scratch.

3.0 out of 5 stars informative, but not concise., 14 April 2008

I bought this book in the hope that it would strengthen some of the ideas that I had gained through my own exploration of freeform knitting. Much to my dismay, the book wasnt very much help. Although there are quite a few pages showing helpful knitting and crochet techniques, to use in conjunction with your freeform knitting, the projects don't really push this technique to the boundaries. Alot of the work freatured in the book is very flat, but I can assure you that when using freeform knitting, you can create some gorgious, 3D effects that just grow and grow...
The patterns for making the projects arn't very clear either, infact they are relatively hard to follow and I believe that once on the attempt of trying to follow them, one is seemingly going to do as they please after a certain amount of time; essentially this is what the whole art of freeform is about, creating, unique knitted pieces, every single time. Release yourself from patterns!
So if you looking for a book on freeform knitting, then I would just buy a concise knitting and crochet encylopedia and just make your own rules. Freeform knitting is just unregulated knitting, there arn't really any instructions to follow, other than what technique to manipulate.

Ballad, Folklore, Non conformist style music... Quite individual, in its own genre. The simplicity and delicate style of the music really makes its special. Joanna Newsom, a Harp player seems to gather her inspiration from nature, the sea, the sky... she paints quite pretty pictures in her songs with quite simple music techniques, but with descriptive and elaborate lyrics... Most songs contain Harp, but others contain Wurlitzer electric piano, harpsichord, piano, guitar and other vocals by Noah Georgeson. Although it seems to attach itself to artists such as Bjork, it isn't as regurgitated with technical effects and mixing... What you hear is what you get! Quite an acquired taste, but those who love folk music will probably adore this gem, also lovers of Bjork would be able to understand its beauty... just I'd advise pop music lovers to stay well clear!
A little work of art for the Debut album of an upcoming, talented musician, maybe we'll see more of her in the future..

5.0 out of 5 stars head-bangily, toe-tappingly, hand-clappingly good!, 10 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Tragic Kingdom (Audio CD)
well what can I say, this album is certainly catchy. At first when I got the album I never listened to it properly and just skipped from one track to the next, as you usually do when you get a new album... eager to hear a bit of each tracks, or to get to the most popular, as with this album it was "Don't Speak" ... which I don't think is the best, but its certainly fantastic! Gwen's voice is just splendid, she can really sing! She really shows this in songs such as "Don't Speak", "Different People", "Just a Girl" and "Tragic Kingdom"... My favourite being "Different People"... mainly because it has such a fabulous rhythem, as do all the songs on this album. The instrumental work in this album is certainly all talent, because they use the instruments so beautifully, the wide variety of instruments used just give the music a totally different, refreshing, catchy sound, which I think makes the band what they are.
Other songs to take note of are "Just a girl", which was another popular song of this album, I would call it exceptional. They have managed to use alernative rock in a way that doesn't sound annoying or irratating. The Chorus is very catchy and the use of electronic keyboard in this album is very smart!
"Sunday Morning" is also a very catchy song, isn't it ironic how the catchy songs are always the most popular? hehe, well this has a very smooth rhythem, the chorus is very catchy with Gwen certainly expelling and expressing her voice in a fantastic way!
"Don't speak" seems like it shouldn't be on this album, because its quite different from the rest of the songs on this album... its got a slower beat, but the lyrics are beautiful and Gwens voice is just gorgious in this song, so silky and soft.
"Tragic Kingdom" is an unusual song; starts off like the voice which comes through the speakers on fair ground rides "Please don't stand up, the ride is about to begin"... and the song starts... a very wonky song, with a dramatic, suprised beat.
To sum up the whole album, its absolutely fantastic, some songs are far better than others, but what else can I say, not many bands can achieve every song to be absolutely perfect... A definate for any No Doubt fans, this album is a sign post of this bands uprisal into fame, some great classics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really thought provoking, 7 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Beautiful (Audio CD)
All three of the Garbage albums, have been a sheer success in my books. BeautifulGarbage being just another step in that success. I know alot of people were disappointed with this album as a whole, because it seemed such a change from what people knew as 'Garbage'. Shirley Manson really progressed in such a fantastic way throughout this album, all the songs are beautifully written, the music is so devine and when your listen to it, your taken on a sort of emotional journey, but it always seems to perk me up. I always listen to this album when I am in a sad or depressed mood, because I know that it will make me feel better, its such a compelling album, thats bound to lift up your mood whatever your feeling.
We have to realise that, when Garbage brought out their debut and Version 2.0 albums, they were still young. BeautifulGarbage just shows the group maturing and this isn't a bad thing at all,the album gives the listner high quality music and you can actually see that the lyrics have been thought about; they actually are written to get across a certain message, a certain feeling, thought or mood.
Some of the more popular tracks are "Androgyny" and "Cherry Lips" as they represent R&B, a style a style which is generally very popular among many of modern day music lovers. But I feel the real jewels of the album are "Shut your Mouth", "Silence Is Golden", "Till the Day that I Die" and "So like a Rose"... I think these songs represent Garbages true signature style. In general the whole album is absolutely fantastic, its definately one of my most favourite albums ever.

Although a little bit more 'experimental' than the "Dummy" album (1994), it still creates an atmosphere are sheer devine feeling. The silky tunes and lushious mixing on the tracks, gives the album a sexy touch. Beth Gibbons voice is absolutely gorgious, some would say its piercing, but its pierces the heart not the ears. I've heard songs from this album being played on fashion websites and catwalks. It definately invigorates moods of utter-most sensuality, perfect for any romantic night in! If you enjoyed "Dummy", I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

ok, if your into Bjork, Moloko, Radiohead, Royksopp or any other funky 'experimental' band, then you will love GusGus... they are truely origional with their music. Especially with songs such as "David" and "Call of the Wild". Earth's (the woman singing lead in most of the songs) voice is just amazing!!! And the icelandic accent is just beautiful! :) Such a gorgious album... worth the buy and the listen too!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, 24 Oct. 2003

Shirley's voice, is like the voice of god! It has so much power, force and strength I think she could easily sing the socks off the other female rock singers. The songs on this album are so elective and unique... Instantly, they seem to have found a style that is both catchy, defying, daring, gorgious and so luscious in many many ways. I could listen to this album over and over again because its just so wonderful. My favourite tracks are "Queer", "As Heaven is wide" and "Stroke of luck"... But really I love them all. You will too, I promise! Buy buy buy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meaningful lyrics, beautiful music aka. The Cardigans, 24 Oct. 2003
well lets say that this album is certainly quite different from "Gran Turismo". But this isn't a bad album! People compare it with their past albums which were a big success and you've got to see it as a bands progession and change. "Long Gone Before Daylight" is a very subdued album, with a very strong tone that seems to hit the listener right away the CD begins to play. The songs are very beautifully written and composed; with the lyrics actually meaning something and making alot of sence, you can actually hear them being sung clearly, by Nina's beautiful voice! Songs like "You're the Storm" and "Please Sister" definatly lift the album considerably. The album is flowing, there are no lumps or bumps, its very enjoyable. A definate buy for all thoes who are Cardigan fans. It won't live up to "Gran Turismo", but its another wonderful side of The Cardigans, as was "Life" and "First Band on the Moon"...
Andrejuno - Cardigan Fan!!
