Authors in Context: Charles Dickens (Oxford World's Classics)

Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.91

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Biography, 22 Dec 2013

I have started to read this book and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Ideally, for me, it doesn't go into to minute detail and is therefore very readable. It also ilustrates how Dickens experiences affected his work and that I find fascinating. Strongly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the Job, 22 Dec 2013

This is an adequate score although I wish some indication of trills etc are given. I have managed to work them out, I believe, but it would be nice to have some indication in the score. Other Chopin scores have, why not this. Perhaps other scores don't have explicit explanations of trills etc, I don't know. Otherwise, its fine and printed with quality.

Trollope: An Illustrated Biography
Trollope: An Illustrated Biography
by C. P. Snow
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Biography, 22 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a real pleasure to read as Snow doesn't just give the history of Trollope's life and his works, he makes very interesting observations and evaluations; and in parts, with some humour. I'm two-thirds the way through and look forward to reading more with relish. Strongly recommended for those wanting to know something about the man Trollope who has written some wonderful books. Appropriate photographs come with the book. This book shouldn't disappoint!

Frederic Chopin: Nocturne In C Sharp Minor (Posthumous)
by Frederic Chopin
Edition: Sheet music

4.0 out of 5 stars good clear print, 26 Sep 2013

Good clear print although the absence of fingering required research elsewhere to get it. I certainly find fingering at my standard very useful!

This review is from: La Vie En Rose [DVD] (DVD)
A good fim if you have an interest in the history of the singer. The film starts slowly but soon warms up and thoroughly portrays the
last suffering years of a great singer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good generally, 26 Sep 2013

A difficult topic as the complications of the Irish politics of the time need to be explained. This does, at times, affect the flow of the book and one's concentration. Nonetheless, the book, in the main, flows well and parts of it are gripping. A good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 26 Sep 2013

Brilliant production - demonstrates that our 21st century society has become so removed in time and custom from the 19th Century that actors are unable (and not their fault) to produce convincingly how people might have interacted. The actors in this production do a fantastic job.
I was looking forward to the scene where Mrs Quiverful strengthens the resolve of her more timid spouse and it didn't appear. No matter, a great production with great actors. Donald Pleasance, as he says goodbye to the retired men of the hospital without any ill will, delivers his lines with great warmth:
"I hope you may live contented, and die trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thankful to Almighty God for the good things he has given you"
Wonderful acting and with no music! If you thought corruption of charity and freedom of the press are only recent political issues of discontent, think again.

Not a brilliant text book and perhaps a little drab. However, it does do the job and is a useful book to use.

If you want to practise Latin translation and learning at the same time, just right. The writing is relatively straightforward, plus, the English translation is on the next page allowing you to follow the vocab without painful looking up in a dictionary. a relaxed way to learn too.
