3.0 out of 5 stars As expected it was well written - but did not grip me with the same intensity as some of this excellent writer's other books, 30 Jun. 2014

Took me ages to get into this world , so many names and details crammed into the first pages. As expected it was well written - but did not grip me with the same intensity as some of this excellent writer's other books.

This review is from: Letting Evil In (Kindle Edition)
A well written sometimes scary tale of the evil in the world as it manifests itself in drug dealing and killing without thought -- in this case in South America. A chilling indictment of the modern world that raises many questions about the future. Much of the book is uncomfortable reading, but does not deter one from turning the pages.

An amusing rib-tickling read, where some keen observations, ring true to those who have spent time in Austria. It requires considerable skill to give a balanced version of the truth without giving offence ... this book succeeds.

3.0 out of 5 stars The comfort of strangers, 3 Mar. 2014

Well written, as ever with this author, but an odd story that did not grip me: more menace required ? 'Comfort' was it ''ironic'' -- did not feel comfortable but dysfunctional to me.

I don't think Ian ever produces anything less than his best. It is a joy to read his literary skills, even if at times, some find him overindulging his talent a bit. Plot is important as is pace, but beautiful descriptive writing is for me becoming less easy to find in many new books. Thank you Ian.

Usual high standard of writing I have come to expect from this author. The descriptions and characterisations gently move one forward , eager to keep track of the story whilst expecting some twist that changes one's perspective -- the ending is a satisfying
resolution. Read it!

The Love of My Life
The Love of My Life

3.0 out of 5 stars Love of my life- middling good., 22 Mar. 2013

An interesting 'back to front ' love story idea, but I felt at times, rather oversupplied with Luca's family life after his death. On the whole well written, I did find myself scanning pages occasionally just to move on. Worth sticking with it to the end, but not outstanding in my view. Compared to e.g. Louisa Young's- 'My Dear I wanted i wanted to tell you' - a different genre of course- there was a book that held my attention and emotional involvement throughout, I cared a lot more about the main characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written compelling story., 7 Mar. 2013

A real sense of place and being in the middle of things. The intriguing love triangle, the descriptions of being on the battlefield, the Berlin wall coming down, all combine a sense of history with powerful emotions that keep one turning the pages and wondering how it will all end.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE STORY OF A SMALL FICTIONAL COMMUNITY OF VICTORIAN BRITS BESIEGED DURING THE INDIAN MUTINY., 20 Feb. 2013

AN EXCELLENT SIEGE WAR STORY: THE SLOW ATTRITION OF A COLONIAL EXISTENCE INTO A QUEST FOR SURVIVAL.
WRITTEN AT A SLOW BURNER PACE ONE SHARES THE GRINDING DOWN AND RESOURCEFULNESS OF THE BESIEGED AS THEIR NUMBERS DWINDLE: IT SHOWS THE GRADUAL STRIPPING AWAY OF ALL OUTER LAYERS OF MEN AND WOMEN AS THEY STRUGGLE TO IMPROVISE THEIR WAY THROUGH TO MERE HUMAN SURVIVAL, WITH THE OCCASIONAL ATTEMPT AT RECREATING THEIR MORAL SUPERIORITY OVER THE ATTACKING NATIVES DESPITE OVERWHELMING ODDS. THE EMPIRE COLLAPSES AROUND THEIR SMALL ENCLAVE UNTIL A LIMITED RESOLUTION AT THE END:THE WRITING MAY SEEM A LITTLE OLD FASHIONED TO A MODERN READERSHIP BUT FITS THE PERIOD AND MOOD PERFECTLY: THERE ARE A FEW FORMATTING ERRORS, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO SPOIL THE READ:I AM GLAD IT WAS RECOMMMENDED TO ME.
