5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, 9 Jan 2013

This visually stunning and beautifully written book eloquently explores the differences and similarities between wolves and dogs. Subtitled 'Dispelling the Myths of Dog Training', the book reveals and clearly illustrates the real dynamics within interactions in both species, and clarifies why the outdated and scientifically inaccurate 'dominance' methods used in dog training are inappropriate and ultimately damaging to the very special human-canine bond.

Toni Shelbourne's understanding of the behaviour and body language of wolves and dogs is based on many years of studying and working with both species. The gorgeous photos are accompanied by clear interpretations and reinforce the extensive information in the text. I've highly recommended 'The Truth about Wolves & Dogs' to my clients, my canine psychology students, and my colleagues who work in the areas of dog behaviour and training.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breathtaking journey through the mysteries of the cosmos, 15 Nov 2012
Paul Halpern has a real gift for explaining the complexities of science in such a way that even seemingly incomprehensible theories are made clear. In `Edge of the Universe' he takes us on a fast-paced, heady cosmic adventure, teeming with twists, turns, solved and as yet unsolved mysteries. This reads like an edge-of-your-seat detective story, where the adventure spans the birth of our universe (and other universes), through the intriguing descriptions of its inhabitants throughout its evolution, to the possibilities that loom with its eventual demise.

Sparkling flashes of wit, humour and very clever analogies add extra zing to this fascinating book. Halpern had me laughing out loud at times, even as my mind was boggling over the sheer scale of the subject matter. Whether your particular interest is inflation, string theory, dark matter, dark flow, multiverses, the primal quantum sea, branes or black holes (take your pick - there's far more to choose from!), this eloquently written `epic voyage to the cosmic horizon and beyond' is an utterly gripping must-read.

Reflector is an extraordinary album by an extraordinary musician and composer. It's haunting and thought-provoking, and the music lingers long after the final note has faded out. Tony Lowe is a virtuoso musician, and a humanitarian. His compositions truly do come from the heart, and that quality shimmers through every track. Listen, relax, and prepare to be transported to a realm of beauty.

Small Dogs Can Save Your Life
Small Dogs Can Save Your Life

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinarily wise, compassionate book, 23 Aug 2010

This beautiful, heart-breaking, heart-warming book is infused with wisdom and compassion. Bel Mooney's story of meeting, falling in love with and adopting Bonnie, an abandoned Maltese Terrier, and the strength and affection that Bonnie gave her throughout the agonizing ending of her long marriage to Jonathan Dimbleby, is a tale of courage and, most of all, of love.

Ultimately inspiring and uplifting, Bel's moving memoir will give immense comfort to others who have found themselves alone and bereft. Reading it is like being in the company of a dear friend who shares her feelings of grief, and subsequent healing, with tremendous honesty and clarity. Bel peppers the chapters with extracts from her diaries, with quotes from poetry and literature that further draw the reader into her experiences, and with stories of other dogs who have brought to their two-legged companions the unutterable mutual devotion and trust that defines the human-canine relationship. And through it all, the shining thread that weaves the emotional fabric together is that of an enduring bond between Bel and a small dog.

What struck me powerfully throughout `Small Dogs Can Save Your Life' is Bel's compassion for and admiration of J, as she calls her first husband, and her willingness and ability to treasure the memories of their 35 years together. She is clearly a generous and deeply caring person. As she says on page 6: `So this is not a misery memoir. No, this is a happiness memoir, although it deals with unhappiness and recovery.' And there's a sense of delight and (yes, even relief) to read of Bel's happiness with her second husband, because I found myself wanting the very best for she who clearly wants only the best for those around her.

The book is aptly subtitled `A Story of Survival' and I would add that it is also a story of how love knows no barriers, between species as well as between ourselves and our own kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, compelling and immensely readable, 2 Aug 2009
Strap yourself in and prepare for a mind-expanding journey into the thrills and mysteries of the universe with award-winning physicist and author, Paul Halpern. This book is a gem.

The long-awaited moment when the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN goes online has generated a great deal of excitement and (through misinformed press coverage) fear and trepidation. In `Collider' Halpern eloquently explains what the LHC is, how it will work, and what scientists will be looking for when it is operational.

The purpose of the LHC is to recreate the conditions which are thought to have existed less than a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang that birthed our universe. To help readers grasp the enormous potential of the discoveries that could be made, Halpern takes the reader on a thrilling adventure story that traces the footsteps of the scientists whose discoveries have pinpointed the extraordinary forces that created and sustain this planet that we call home.

Peppered with entertaining anecdotes and analogies which clarify the scientific principles, `Collider' is clearly a labour of love for its author. Halpern's highly infectious passion for science transmits itself through every page, and his explanations of the principles lend fuel to the imagination and generate a sense of wonder. The chapters take us on a compelling journey through subjects which include the standard model and the four forces, relativity, supersymmetry, the theory of everything, dark energy and dark matter, black holes, strangelets, wormholes and higher dimensions, describing what the LHC could divulge of these. The book concludes with the future plans for the Super LHC and the International Linear Collider.

For those who are concerned that the LHC will be the instrument of doom for our planet, unleashing black holes or strangelets which would annihilate the earth, Halpern gives reassurance. He points out that it is the energy `per particle' which will reproduce the early conditions, and that this amounts to `less than a billionth of a dietary calorie per collision.'

Like Carl Sagan before him, Paul Halpern has an extraordinary gift for enabling readers to envision the universe as he does; as a wondrous place where everything, from the tiniest particle to the largest star, is dependent on particular forces. `Collider' reveals what we could learn when the portal of possibility that is the LHC shares its secrets and reveals more about these forces which shaped the cosmos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful tarot deck, 24 Nov 2008

This is a beautiful tarot deck by David Sexton, who is also the creator of The Tarot of Oz. The cards are delightful, with lush, well-drawn images which each tell a clear story and have an emotional impact that aids interpretation. The background colours for the Minor Arcana suits correspond with the elements, which also makes this deck easy to use.

Angels and winged spirits feature in all of the cards, but each card in the Major Arcana is ruled by an angel or archangel and the symbolism and stories of these in the booklet are well-chosen and fascinating, tapping into a rich seam of spirituality and mythology. The personal interpretations are very clear, written from a wise and compassionate perspective.

Highly recommended for both beginners and experienced tarot enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and enchanting, 10 Nov 2008
This review is from: Runemarks (Hardcover)
I absolutely loved 'Runemarks'. Although it's been marketed as a Young Adult book, I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter and her friends did, and view it as a crossover book that any age group with a penchant for fantasy and magic will thoroughly enjoy. I found it engrossing from the first wonderful sentence: "Seven o'clock on a Monday morning, five hundred years after the End of the World, and goblins had been at the cellar again."

An outsider who has to discover and grow into her power, runes, magic, Norse gods, goblins, sharp humour, action and adventure, and an abundance of clever twists all combine to make this a high-voltage read that's hard to put down. I've read reviews that say you would need some knowledge of the Norse gods to understand this book, but I don't agree. Their characters are part of the story and it's not important to know their mythical backgrounds - though you may find you want to explore them, and the runes, further after reading 'Runemarks.' There's a list of characters and a brief description of the individual runes at the beginning of the book, which makes it easy to see who's who - the cast of characters made me laugh, because it swiftly becomes clear, before you even start to read the book, that Loki is Trouble with a capital T.

If you're expecting a novel along the lines of 'Chocolat', 'The Lollipop Shoes', 'Gentlemen and Players', 'Sleep, Pale Sister,' or any of Joanne's adult books, you'll find 'Runemarks' to be very, very different but just as well-written. As an author she has always admirably resisted being typecast, and 'Runemarks' reveals how extraordinarily versatile she is as a writer.
