4.0 out of 5 stars Colourful guide, 2 Nov. 2014
Like the cover suggests, this is a thick, very colourful guide to sports facts. It would make a great gift for an armchair sports fan.
The clear, simple style makes it look like a children's book, which may put off some people though.

It's not perfect. In the longest winning streak section, they credit a sumo wrestler who kept winning for three years. Aleksandr Karelin had a 13-year unbroken record of victories in Greco-Roman wrestling, which is well-known and clearly superior.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, 20 Oct. 2014
For the most part, this guide looks great! I noticed it's distributed in the UK by Dorling Kindersley so, as you might expect, it's got an appealing layout and lots of colour photos, like their Eye Witness guides.
On the downside, there are a few problems. The index isn't very complete and there are mistakes (for instance, the main section about the Guggenheim Museum is on page 219, not 48). Also the map on the inside front cover, which would have been a good opportunity to show how the various boroughs of New York relate to each other, is just a confusing jumble of colours and suggests Central Park has its own section (which it hasn't). Hopefully they'll sort these things out in future editions but at the moment the Eye Witness series has got the edge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive biography of classic author, 16 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Rudyard Kipling (Paperback)
Although I enjoyed reading this huge tome, I spotted some problems. The index has a few mistakes (quite a lot under Elsie Bambridge, for instance) and, at times, the author fails to take into account that the events described were taking place 100 years ago rather than now. In particular, amongst the Edwardian upper classes, it was considered normal for parents not to spend much time with their children, so Mrs Kipling's decision not to be at her ill daughter's bedside was, contrary to what Andrew Lycett writes, not unusual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide, 15 Oct. 2014
The Lonely Planet series looks a bit dated compared to the colourful Eyewitness guides these days but the quality of the information is top-notch. You get the feeling that they're written by people who really know - and love - the cities. On the downside, I didn't find the (many) itineries or suggested walking tours very useful. If you've got a good map, you really don't need them.

Ian Fleming led a fascinating life but this biography often dissolves into a confusion of contradictory detail.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lost in words, 3 Oct. 2014
Sadly this huge book is let down by the poor quality of translation. Tove's story fails to float off the page despite all the work the biographer has put in. Sculptor's Daughter remains the most readable guide to her life. On the up side - it looks beautiful. I loved the colour plates of Jansson's early paintings and the maps and cartoons she made during her visits as an art student to Paris.

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality product, 29 Aug. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm sceptical that particular dog breeds need specific foods but this product has - almost - converted me. In particular out of our dogs, 16-year-old Cesky perked up when presented with a bowl, and even started helping herself from the bag! Waggy tails all round means Beta gets a five-star verdict from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short introduction, 18 Aug. 2014
This book has dated a little since its publication in 2003. Telling readers about J.K. Rowling's early days in poverty, writing in Edinburgh coffee shops, is no longer necessary and, as another reader has noted, she seems to miss the point about Tove Jansson's Moomin series. Lurie appears more at home discussing American writers like Frank Baum (22 pages) rather than European ones (11 pages on the Moomins). Although perhaps with the success of Wicked, it's time for an Oz update! Overall, I found quite a few things to enjoy. However, since there are only 14 essays, it's a fairly slim volume and, if you have read the books discussed, you find you already know much of what is said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 7 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Isherwood (Paperback)
Despite its length, this biography of Isherwood is wonderfully easy to read. It's true it's a very thick book, but compared to the huge diary he kept, it doesn't seem so bad. I certainly got to the end - it's a monumental achievement by Peter Parker to condense Isherwood's long life into a single volume - and I savoured every word.

4.0 out of 5 stars 100 poems and four mistakes, 2 Aug. 2014
This is an attractive, nicely-presented collection, although it's very conservative. There are hardly any living poets represented or overseas poets and few women, with the honorable exception of Jenny Joseph (as a living woman). I liked the Emily Dickinson verse, which was a nice surprise - I hadn't seen it before.
A poke in the eye (or four) to the publishers though. Tennyson's poem is called the Lady of Shalott, not Shallot as rendered on the contents page. Also they've put the wrong cover on the back! It states that it includes poems by Pam Ayres, Hilaire Belloc and Cole Porter, but they're only in a previous version of the tome.
