4.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy and romantic, 18 April 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Band Played On (Audio CD)
If you like your Dance Band Music played in a more mellow, dreamy and romantic style, then you will probably enjoy this. Guy Lombardo, who called his music "The Sweetest Music this Side of Heaven", (an expression and style which was subsequently copied by Maurice Winnick here in the UK ) enjoyed a lot of success with this style, created by using gentle saxes at the forefront of the band. The music is very laid back and is great for relaxing with late at night, perhaps with a glass of wine !
One tends to think of the Dance Band Era as being very much the music of the 30's (Swing taking over in the 40's) - and with that in mind, I feel that this CD should have perhaps concentrated on his 30's music. It tries to cover too wide a spectrum covering the years from 1927 to 1950. However having said that, it is still a worthwhile CD to have in your collection if you like this style of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Release of the Full Score, 18 April 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Guns of Navarone is my Favourite War-time Action Adventure film of all time. Since its release back in 1961 I must have seen it countless numbers of times and have TWO copies of it on DVD in my collection and never tire of watching it, even if I almost know the dialogue that is coming up ! The stirring music from the film is an integral part of the film itself. Although an LP was release back in 1961 of the OST, several sections of the score were left out. Some sections were shortened even in the film itself, but HERE you have the complete works as composed by Dimitri Tiomkin in superb DOLBY SURROUND SOUND - believe me, it's wonderful stirring stuff! If you liked the film - you will love this, and want to have it in your collection. It consists of 17 tracks from the film, followed by 4 bonus tracks (about 10 minutes) from "The Sundowners", another Tiomkin composition, and finally a vocal version of "Yassu".
If I could make one slight criticism, I would not have included the "Sundowners" tracks - good as they are, but personally, I found that they were a bit of a distraction to the main object of this CD - ie. a wonderful and long overdue recording of the fine music from an equally fine film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable Series, 9 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Vaguely remember this series when first shown, although I dont think I ever saw all episodes. But having said that, it's a great and thoroughly enjoyable series. Somewhat light-hearted, but nevertheless it has it's moments of tension and drama amidst some wonderful scenery. Some interesting cameo guest appearances also. For the small purchase price I'd thoroughly recommend this. Also, as each episode is only 25 minutes long, it's great to watch an episode and escape into the past for a short while before going to bed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great film but avoid this copy, 28 May 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a terrific film, although it does overglamourise two ruthless killers. But having said that, it is a thoroughly entertaining film and well worth having in your collection.
However, unless you dont mind the film having been chopped about, avoid this particular copy, as it is not shown in it's original wide-screen ratio. For the little extra expense, my advice would be to go for the 40th Anniversary copy (also on Amazon) which is in wide-screen format and is vastly superior. (The wide-screen version gets 4 stars!)

1.0 out of 5 stars GOOD FILM - AWFUL COPY, 9 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jane Eyre [DVD] [1970] (DVD)
This is not the best of adaptations of "Jane Eyre" by a long chalk - but it's not bad.
One gets the impression though that it is all a bit rushed, presumably to keep it within the 95 minutes or so running time. (It may of course have been heavily edited!)
There are also some rather awful "over-played" sequencies in places - particularly in the earlier sections showing Jane Eyre as a child, but this is probably due to the pretty dire acting by the actress playing the young Jane. But once the adult Jane comes into play in the form of the lovely Susannah York (perhaps somewhat mis-cast, as Jane Eyre was supposed to be very plain)- things improve somewhat. There are still some over-acted patches and it still seems rushed on occasions, but perhaps one can live with that !
However the thing that really spoils this DVD more than anything else, is the terrible DVD transfer. I know the film was made in the 70's but I have seen better transfers of films made in the 30's and 40's.
The DVD case states that the film has been "digitally restored"! I doubt that very much, as it could not have been THIS bad had that been the case. I suspect that that is just an attempted "con" by the DVD manufacturers! Released by a company called "Critics Choice" - one can only assume that the critics eyesight was somewhat lacking !!
The DVD was cheap, but frankly I would rather have paid more for a decent copy. It might be worth waiting to see if a more reputable company releases a genuine "digitally re-mastered" and "cleaned up" copy of this film in the future. The film deserves that.
I would have given it a much higher star rating if not for the poor quality of transfer. Great shame, seems such a waste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 60's series, 22 April 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really great 60's spy series - okay, some of the storylines are a bit thin (some even bordering on the bizarre!) - but McGill (Richard Bradford) holds it all together.

The boxed set is superbly packaged and contains all 30 episodes plus an interview with Richard Bradford and other extras. Considering the series is 40 years old the picture quality is excellent - no doubt cleaned up.

If you liked the series, this boxed set is a must. Even if you only remotely liked it, it is still worth having.

The style is very 60's, and I loved the shots of London (the streets seemed so deserted compared to today!) and the 60's cars. McGill, most of the time, seemed to drive a Hillman Imp I think it was.

With todays anti-smoking attitudes he may not have been popular - there was hardly a shot where he wasn't smoking or lighting one up !

Some reviewers have criticised the interview, saying that he was very negative about the series - but he was only stating his views of the time - after all, he was there - we weren't. He wasn't totally negative anyway, and he was right in what he said about some of the poor scripts and somewhat dubious acting from some of the support actors -although most were okay. But dont be put off by that, it was, after all, somewhat light-hearted entertainment and thoroughly enjoyable.

I'd highly recommend this boxed set. I shall be sitting through all 30 episodes again soon !
