Some of the lesser known (or not often played) great hits from the 70's. They may not be everyone's favourites - but I love 'em!!

As other reviewers have said, this is a little slow and drawn out but it has its exciting moments. It's not exactly "edge of the seat" stuff but its not bad either. It is shown in full 2:35 ratio which looks great - not 4:3 ratio as shown on the sleeve. Also the running time is 82 minutes and not 113 minutes as shown. Worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore Criticisms, 17 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was a bit apprehensive about ordering this DVD in view of some negative criticisms about the backing group.
In fact it's a really good concert and the backing group are fine.
One needs to perhaps mention that Roy Buchanan's guitar style was somewhat akin to a jazz musicians solo improvisation and it would be virtually impossible for any backing group to follow it note for note.
So the group are therefore just providing the basic back beat (and doing it well) while Roy is doing "his thing" in the foreground - this is particularly noticeable in the "Green Onions" track. The keyboard player also has some really nice touches in the final track "Wayfaring Pilgrim".
There are no "Slick Edits" in this concert DVD and sometime is spend by Roy and the band tuning up, but this adds to the feeling of "being there".
So, all in all - Roy Buchanan is brilliant of course, the backing group are excellent, and the DVD itself is worth every penny of Amazons asking price.
If you're a fan of the late Roy Buchanan, then this DVD (along with his "Live from Austin" DVD) are a "must have", as there is so little of his concert material available.
Buy and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Beautiful, 11 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nearly all the reviews say what beautiful music this is - and who am I to argue - it is!
So sit back, relax, perhaps pour yourself a glass of wine, and let your imagination drift along with the wonderful music, and, if in the process you get a bit misty eyed - no matter - this music has this effect on you.
So buy with confidence and dream with love...........

1.0 out of 5 stars Good DVD but Awful Supplier, 9 Sep 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The release of these two early Malcolm Saville titles is very welcome and the DVD is excellent.
The company that supplies the DVD however (Fougasse Films) could do with improving their act.
Firstly the DVD was incorrectly addressed, which resulted in it not being received within the 28 days since ordering.
In fairness they did send out a replacement DVD (to the correct address) which was received the following day.
The original incorrectly addressed DVD was eventually received much later and was returned to Fougasse Films (at my own expense) for which I never got so much as a "thank you" from them.
This is a company that needs to get it's act together and also develope some "public relations" skills.
Five Stars for the DVD - only One Star for the Suppliers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Rubbish, 9 Sep 2010
I saw this film recently and I have to agree with the other "negative" reviews.
I found in the first hour and a half that I was continually looking at my watch wondering how much longer I had to endure it - it is absolute rubbish !
I know films are subjective, but I am amazed that anyone liked it !
As another reviewer said, it could have been told in half an hour and even that would have been too much. In fact it would have been better if it wasn't told at all !
It was supposed to be a comedy, but there were very few incidents in it to raise a smile let alone a laugh ! It was so contrived and predictable !
The story-line is also feeble and none of the characters amount to much at all.
We are supposed to believe that the Meryl Streep character is suddenly re-attracted to her ex-husband (a gross, middle-aged, over-weight, hairy, sweaty and ugly individual) and once again falls for his corny lines of wanting a reconcilliation etc.
With her newly found independence and maturity it is a most unlikely scenario.
None of the characters in the film are remotely likeable, with the exception of the Steve Martin character perhaps. Even the kids are obnoxious!
I think you would have to be a pretty shallow individual to like this film at all.
The film is corny, unfunny, stupid, crude at times and totally boring !

Do yourself a favour and give it a miss - you'll be the better for it !

101 Pirate Radio Hits
101 Pirate Radio Hits

5.0 out of 5 stars They were the Best in Radio, 2 April 2010

This review is from: 101 Pirate Radio Hits (Audio CD)
This really is an excellent collection of 60's pop music, and because it contains several of those rarities which were played by the pop pirates in the 60's, it is so much better than most 60's compilations which tend to just contain "bog-standard" hits of the day.
It also captures the spirit of the offshore radio stations between March '64 and August '67 - a period when we had some of the best radio stations that the UK and Europe has ever had. Sadly, radio has gone steadily downhill since those days and most radio stations today, in comparison, are about as exciting as watching paint dry!
Anyone thinking of buying this 4 CD set - I would advise them to do so - it is superb and at an extremely good price on Amazon.
Dont be put off by previous negative reviews - I can confirm that all the tracks ARE the original recordings and the recording quality (for recordings made in that era) is fine.
Yes - some of the tracks are in stereo, but remember in those days many recordings were made in stereo but usually realised in Mono on the single (45rpm) but were available in stereo on the LP (33 1/3rpm) - for those of us who had a stereo record player!
I cannot see why some reviewer had a problem with this - far better to have the stereo version if available surely?
Bear in mind also, the pop pirates transmissions were on Medium Wave(AM) so were only transmitted in Mono anyway. (Stereo radio came some time later with FM)
A couple of minor points - I think the producers of this set should have put the tracks in some sort of chronological order, and, as another reviewer said, some of those wonderful pirate radio jingles between the tracks would have been another nostalgic reminder of how great the pirate stations were.
They really were the Best in Radio.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Music but......., 12 Mar 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Anyone who has been to an Irish Evening of Drinking and Music will know that the musical entertainment consists of, not only Drinking Songs, but also Traditional Ballads, Fiddle Playing, Ceili Bands and of course, the Irish Rebel Songs, and this double CD is a great collection of some of the best from within these genres, including TWO different versions of that wonderful song from the pen of Phil Coulter "The Town I Loved So Well" - the sad lament to the town of Derry in the North of Ireland.
It's a shame that it is let down somewhat by rather poor recording quality in places, some tracks having been recorded at much higher volumes than others. the result is some distortion on certain tracks. Perhaps it WAS transferred from an LP as another reviewer suggested !
Delta Music, who have released these tracks on the "Performance" label, are a company at the cheaper end of the market, and presumably sacrificed quality for quantity, which is a great shame as I would rather have paid more for a better quality recording.
Having said that however it is a great collection, and unless you have most of the tracks on other CD's, it is worth having in your collection for the music alone, especially in view of the very reasonable price on Amazon.
For the musical content I would award it FIVE stars, but that has to be reduced to THREE stars in view of the PATCHY recording quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comparisons, 21 Feb 2010

This review is from: The Alamo [DVD] (DVD)
Prior to seeing this version of "The Alamo" I had only seen the 1960 John Wayne version which, although I enjoyed it when first realeased, future viewings tended to show up it's faults and inaccuracies.
The John Wayne version was grossly over-sentimentalised and riddled with some awful "toe-curling" lines and cliches - but I suppose it was perhaps good for it's time.
However this later version is a vast improvement and is much more factual and realistic.
There are some great performances by it's four main stars, who tend to under-play their respective characters rather than over-play them as in the John Wayne version. Added to that, there is some absolutely stunning photography and sets. It also has some interesting extras on the DVD.

This has to be the definitive version of The Alamo leaving the John Wayne version very much in the shadows.

According to some other reviews it did not do well at the box-office - I really cannot understand why.
It's a brilliant film and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
For the nominal cost it's well worth buying and getting a truer account of The Alamo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Arrangements, 26 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Waldo de los Rios had quite a number of popular hits back in the 70's with his arrangements of classical music.
The classical purists probably didn't approve of his treatment of these classical pieces - but they proved very popular with the record buying public, especially in Europe.
The arrangements were not given the "rocked or speeded up" treatment but were just given a gentle boost or addition percussion here or there.
This CD features quite a number (but not all) of his most famous arrangements and is an absolute delight to listen to.

Great shame he is no longer with us.

Buy and Enjoy.
