5.0 out of 5 stars Couture techniques, 22 Jun. 2012

Terry Fox the author is a master of sewing techniquesousted in this book to produce a range of fantastic quality garments. The patterns as the previous review suggests are a wee bit dated, but the information is very comprehensive and would give someone with a bit of sewing knowledge a big step up in understanding why their own home made clothes do note quite live up to expectation. Give the tecniques a whirl even in a fairly inexpensive fabric and you will see a big difference. Much of the bodice construction detail would be very usable in bridal wear. There is a lot of information within this book with clear instructions. Well worth adding as a reference book to a sewing library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately in french, 6 May 2012

This book is a delight for people who love classic children's clothes. The book does have a predominance of liberty lawn and plain linen as the signature look but none the worse for that. Many of the shapes are simple but attractive. Although the diagrams are fairly clear and it is possible as an experienced sewer to wing it from the trace off patterns, I can't help feeling that the author deserves a translator to make her beautiful books accessible to a wider audience. There is a lot more substance than many english publications. Visually this authors books are all a treat, especially the fancy dress costumes book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning book, 6 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As previous reviewers have written the book shows how a combination of relatively simple techniques, stencil, stitch, cut, bead, built up to create some of the most exotic, yet simple, wearable and desirable clothes I have ever come across. And all this is achievable by an enthusiastic home sewer. I know most of the larger projects will require a high level of time and commitment to complete, but I can't think of many more satisfying results for the effort. For those of us who know that a big project is beyond our time commitments for the moment, the techniques would translate to many simpler projects. The book is so beautifully photographed one can't fail but inspire to dream even if you never sew a stitch, however, if you love hand sewing I defy you not to be impressed with this collection.
And not only do the projects have the beauty of handmade bespoke clothing, but the simple classic shapes of the garments flatter a wide range of real women. Encore Ms Chanin

5.0 out of 5 stars still a valid addition to your sewing shelf, 3 Dec. 2010

Although the interior photographs, the fabrics and especially the over frilly detail now look dated, this book is still a really sound technical manual in making quality hand sewn soft furnishings. I have shelves of sewing books, but this is for me the clearest description (with diagrams) of how to construct interlined curtains that I have come across to date. I do think think book would be ripe for a rewrite, as the author has a very clear, if slightly "head girl" style of writing. Do exactly as she says and your project will turn out successfully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye candy, 3 Mar. 2010

My daughter 2 and nieces 4 and 5 adored the clothes in this book. Not for shrinking violet children or mums: personally I loved the colourful clothes. The book sparks a whole host of ideas which sends your mind running off on flights of fancy of glorious riotous unadulterated colour and fun. It is more of a dip in for inspiration, rather than a real learn to sew book ( and thats fine -it gives tips and hints where it can) but my goodness what inspiration!. The patterns are based on European tradition where you trace off and add your own seam allowances, and it has a variety of projects included- more for girls than boys (though they are not left out). The text is clearly written, with wit and the book is encouraging rather than merely showing off the clearly talented authors work. This would be a perfect mothers day gift for any mummy who loves sewing.

Just as a P.S. I have made up some of these clothes in more classic fabric combinations (velvet combined with liberty prints) The patterns have worked well and the look although totally different, they were lovely and much admired- especially the fluted hem jacket.

5.0 out of 5 stars very effective cream, 7 Jan. 2010

My mum asked me to order this as they had given her a small samples at the hospital. She has struggled with the side effects of chemo and this cream did seam to help with that quite a lot. It goes into the skin quickly and isnt greasy or slimy. Seems to help prevent the cracking and is very soothing. Worth a try... dont know what it was developed for but it seems to work for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars talk to your child, 16 May 2009

This review is from: Tell Me About The Sea (Board book)
This is a book with questions rather than a narrative. It encourages you to look, count, choose etc from some really well illustrated pages. Lots of flaps textures and different prints make the bok suitable for quite young children and the book grows with the child. This has been a really popular seris in our house, my 14 month old daughter chooses this book herself quite often. We bought it, along with the building yard book, after" tell me about the farm" was such a favourite.Tell Me About the FarmTell Me About the Building Site

5.0 out of 5 stars A real favourite in our house, 15 April 2009
My 13 month old daughter has loved this book for months now. Don't expect a plot to read in the conventional way. This is a look and talk book with flaps which fold out (in a variety of directions) and each page has a few questions which prompt a conversation with your child about the picture. For such a few pages a lot of thought has gone into introducing concepts such as animal noises, counting, naming young, textures etc. and the book proved sturdy enough to still be in one piece despite my daughters enthusiastic reading. This book is as popular as "Dear Zoo" in our house.
