1.0 out of 5 stars boring prose that adds nothing about actual garden design, 18 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
sorry but this book for all its hype is just a bore!
the use of actual records is mundane
The author writes with no real insight into Brown's choice or reasons for designs

You would be much better reading - Capability Brown and the English Landscape Garden (Shire Library) by Laura Mayer

5.0 out of 5 stars changed my mind about Elgar completely, 18 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Buying this to find out more about Elgar

this book shows he was an egoist who ignored English music and his family
to become a rich (by marriage) emulator of Wagner (to curry royal patronage)

I particularly was amazed how he deserted his family business and ill treated poor music students
before his 'lucrative ' marriage

Wellington's Smallest Victory: The Story of William Siborne & Great Model of Waterloo
Wellington's Smallest Victory: The Story of William Siborne & Great Model of Waterloo
by Peter Hofschroer

Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars a must for anyone interested in Waterloo or Wellington, 18 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
a true story of how history can be perverted by politics or egotism

the price paid by Siborne for showing the Prussians (supposedly) arriving 'too early' onto the battlefield will make you think twice about the actual course of the battle and the ego of Weelington.

1.0 out of 5 stars do not understand why they published this book!, 18 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having bought this book expecting a wealth of shooting anecdotes like 'Big Shots' 'The Lady's Game' (amusing cartoons about a Lady shooting etiquette)etc. I found this book to have a collection of boring quotations to do with shooting that are mainly victoriana and are expected to be taken as amusing! the quotations to do with shooting various and gun dogs behaviour could have been written by anyone today making it up as they went ..

all in all I found this book a waste of my time. even the sections on shooting seasons for petes sake!

If you want a GOOD book on shooting historical quotations try buy " Big Shots" " The Ladys Game" or even the "The Gameshooters pocket guide"

For this - it advertises far more than it delivers.

The London Scottish in the Great War
The London Scottish in the Great War
by Mark Lloyd
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £18.77

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book conveying the heroic periods of the London Scottish, 16 Feb 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent history particularly for the Battle of Messines 1914..
The author uses many soldiers letters and journals writtne during or following the events to convey the achievement of a regiment faced with a superior enemy and with defective weapons held their ground
