5.0 out of 5 stars Best Western, 5 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although The Virginian was first broadcast 50 years ago(from 1962 to 1971), I consider it to be one of the best western series ever made. The series was made in colour and has been restored and remastered for this DVD boxset, with each of the 30 episodes of season one (from 1962/1963) running for approximately 75 minutes.

Anyone who grew up watching this series in the 1960s will immediately recognise the opening titles and theme music and remember the strong story lines and characters, set at Shiloh Ranch and the town of Medicine Bow, Wyoming in the 1890s.

The main cast include, of course, The Virginian himself (James Drury), Judge Garth(Lee J. Cobb), Trampas (Doug Mc Clure) et al. And watch out for the numerous famous guest stars, including George C. Scott, Bette Davis, Lee Marvin, DeForest Kelly, James Doohan, Robert Vaughan, Ricardo Montalban, Nancy Sinatra, Edward Asner, Robert Duvall, Jack Warden, Eddie Albert, Vera Miles, David White (Larry Tate from Bewitched) and many others. A veritable nostalgia-fest for people of a certain age!

Producer Roy Huggins also produced such well known series as The Fugitive, The Rockford Files, Cheyenne, Maverick, Alias Smith and Jones et al.

Special features include cast interviews, including James Drury.

For anyone with an interest in the TV Western genre, this is a must-have series, an absolute classic (alongside other great western series such as Bonanza, The High Chaparral and Alias Smith and Jones) and a real bargain at the price for nearly 37 hours of entertainment. I certainly hope that the later seasons are released on Region 2 soon. Buy it and you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chocks Away!, 30 Mar 2011
This wonderfully evocative series about the earliest days of British military aviation in World War I (before the RFC became the RAF) features fine acting and strong characterisations, highlighting the incredible bravery (and tragically short lives) of the young pilots in their flimsy machines of the day.

The flying sequences feature accurate replicas of the aircraft, such as the British BE2 biplane, up against the far superior German Fokker Eindecker monoplane, with its forward-firing machine gun (synchronised with the propeller, to avoid shooting it off!).

In addition to the flying action, there is a strong story line following the family of pilot Sgt. Alan Farmer (played by Edward Woodward's son, Tim) back in rural England, contrasting with the upper class background of Lt.Charles Gaylion (Michael Cochrane).

All in all, an absorbing series which I highly recommend to anyone interested in early military aviation history. You can almost smell the castor oil, fabric dope, and mown grass!

A bargain price for all 25 episodes of the two series (over 20 hours) made during what I consider to be the Golden Age of Television in the 1970s.

5.0 out of 5 stars History in Stone, 5 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Tower [DVD] (DVD)
This fascinating series looks behind the scenes at this famous (and infamous) landmark, covering its history and the many characters who have lived (and died) within its imposing stone walls over the centuries.

A particularly interesting (if gruesome!) story is that of Simon Sudbury, Richard II's Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor, who was seized at The Tower by a mob during the Peasant's Revolt in 1381 and summarily beheaded (beware modern Chancellors!). His mummified head is now kept at The Church of St. Gregory in Sudbury, Suffolk.

Thoroughly recommended for anyone with an interest history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Panic!, 22 Oct 2010
The best situation comedy ever written, and 75% off the list price. What are you waiting for? Pure nostalgia to make you feel better and no prescription required.

The finest ensemble of comedy characters ever assembled (each perfectly portrayed by wonderful actors, most of whom are sadly no longer with us) who interact perfectly.

This series is part of the national psyche and will no doubt still be repeated in 100 years (unlike many of today's lame so-called 'comedy' series).

Indispensable for any connoisseur of comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sharp Mind Indeed!, 11 Oct 2010
Although made in the late 1960s/early 1970s, mainly in black & white, this series is well worth watching. Too many people insist on widescreen colour and so miss these gems from the past and much lamented golden age of television. I find that the black and white picture (which is of generally good quality)actually adds to the period atmosphere and nostalgia. The stories, which are set in the 1920s, are absorbing and Hugh Burden is a fine actor. Mr Reeder may seem mild mannered and unassuming but is anything but and can show a tough side when needed. He always gets his man, although his corpulent & monocoled boss, Sir Jason Toovey, invariably claims the credit. There are also many well known faces, for example John Le Mesurier (Dad's Army's Sergeant Wilson)as a rather sinister character! And a catchy signature tune too! I recommend this series wholeheartedly. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 30 Sep 2010
This box set is outstanding value. The Jeremy Brett/Edward Hardwicke incarnations of Holmes and Watson will never be bettered. The scripts are very faithful to the original stories and there are guest appearances from many fine actors. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bargain!, 23 Sep 2010
What a fantastic bargain this box set is. John Mortimer's wry and witty scripts are a delight. The eponymous character is perfectly portrayed by Leo McKern and in the same way that Jeremy Brett 'is' Sherlock Holmes, David Suchet 'is' Hercule Poirot and Joan Hickson 'is' Miss Marple, it is difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. Obey your instincts and buy this.

A wonderful piece of kit, but bibliophiles beware of its seductive charms. It's so easy to buy and download books you can't resist it. Only kidding. It's great!

5.0 out of 5 stars 21st Century Holmes, 23 Sep 2010
I was initially doubtful whether I would enjoy this series, as I have always felt that the superb Jeremy Brett/Edward Hardwicke incarnations of Holmes and Watson could never be bettered. I still think that, but nevertheless found this latest 21st century interpretation absorbing and entertaining in its own right. There is room for them both in the Holmesian world. The Victorian Holmes would, I am sure, have been fascinated by and made full use of modern technology had it been available to him. I look forward to a second series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful, 22 Sep 2010
What can you say? This wonderful series cannot be bettered for writing or acting. You may like to know that another great early 1970s BBC series, from the same producer and writers, 'Colditz' was released on 15 November 2010.
