5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, 14 May 2004
This review is from: Hopes and Fears (Audio CD)
Everyone it seems is banging on about these lads. Buy just how good are they? Well I've seen these guys support Travis, I was excited by their performance as I was blown away by 'Somewhere only we know'. The music press have hailed Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Scissor Sisters, I have all these albums and nothing compares to this. This is quite simply up there with Kanye West's debut and it will be one of the top albums of the year. This is quite simply some of the most beautiful music I have heard, at the moment no-one can touch Keane and the only thing as good is buying the singles to get the tracks that failed to make the album. If you only buy two albums this year, forget about the rest of the alphabet, go to K and pick up Keane's and Kanye West's!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars album of the year so far, 9 Mar. 2004
This review is from: College Dropout (Audio CD)
This is the first American hip-hop album I've purchased since the Roots' Phrenology. First and foremostly this is album is one of the smoothest albums in terms of production that I've heard since Snoop's debut. Here is a man that may well take the Pharell's title as most sought after producer out there. Yes this man knows a tune, but can he rap? Kanye isn't the best rapper I've ever heard, he lacks the rhyming ability of Tupac whose poetry studies gave him a level of understanding of meter that most other rappers can only dream of. However, I feel that what really endears yourself to this album is West's subject matter. His brush with death has resulted in a respect for life in tracks such as through the wire, a respect for God in Jesus Walks and respect for family in family business. like a romantic poet such as wordsworth or coleridge west finds truth in the most mundane in this track, it is the most beautiful ode to family released since 2pac's dear mama. I think this is a fantastic album that will speak to its audience on a number of levels. if all you care about is the music then this album has something for you, but if youre sick of the tripe put out there by such artists as 50 pence and marshall (isn't the joke just wearing a bit thin?) mathers then you'll love this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pass the chutney!!, 9 Feb. 2004
Well, who can you compare these lads to? They really are a veritable chimera of bands from along the ages. Upon first listening there is certainly a bit of Athelete about them. They favour plinky plonky keyboards which is curiously charming. Then there's the Americana which resembles Semisonic and furthermore when theyre belting out their choruses there's even a a bit of Nirvana about them. Lucklily for me, I like all three bands and yet these guys do have their own original sound. Go and buy this album, it's like mango chutney on twiglets at three in the morning, you'll have no idea why you like this, you just will!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 20 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Metallica (Audio CD)
The fact that some people content themselves with the mediocre, middle of the road rubbish always baffles me. Music needs its extremes and hip-hop and heavy metal are two forms that push the limits. Without these two genres, we would never have had 'rage against the machine', a fantabulous band with a wonderful debut. Rant over, back to the album it's ok, buy it if you like Metallica, if you like heavy metal though, go and buy a Maiden album, theyre a lot better and havent sought to sell out in the way these lads have!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated, but who cares?, 29 Dec. 2003
This review is from: Get Born (Audio CD)
I bought this album and I have to say it is great rock and roll. These lads are very Strokesy but then they themselves borrowed from a previous generation. the facts are that most forms for music have now been done to death. Yes, it could be said that these guys sound dated but then so do arguably the two biggest selling british bands of the 90s in jamiroquai and oasis. (i don't count spice girls as they were hardly a band now were they?) So, if you like good music and are not bothered whether its innovative or not then buy this! it's very good you know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just 19? surely not!!, 6 Nov. 2003
This review is from: Boy In Da Corner (Audio CD)
I think this album serves to prove that innovation in hip-hop and tight lyrics is something that is becoming more and more prevalant in UK hip-hop. For my money, the only decent hip-hop album to come out of the US this year was Outkast's which is brilliant but to be honest isn't anything new and is reminiscent of the g-funk era. What we have in Dizee Rascal is a whole different animal. It's perhaps wrong to call this a hip-hop album. The wonderful fusion of garage and hip-hop is served up with gritty urban reality. There's nothing pretentious a la The Streets about this boy. 19 years old and telling it like it is on tracks such as Fix up, look sharp and the rather brilliant Jezebel. Even the collaboration with Basement Jaxx while slightly out of place, is funkier than a man that hasn't bathed in a year! Just buy this, along with Twang, this lad has managed to restore my faith in hip hop!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is really quite good you know, 29 Oct. 2003
This review is from: 12 Memories (Audio CD)
This album is a grower in every sense of the world. At first listening the single 'Re-offender' stood out and little else. But upon the second attempt I found myself having more time for the political tracks such as 'Beautiful Occupation' and 'Peace the F*ck out'. Then I went to the Brixton gig and I can honestly say I think this album is brilliant. Gone is the youthful exuberance of the first album, this isnt a pop album as with the invisible band, and is even darker than the man who. It's a good time for Travis to release this as the album will be seen as a cult classic in retrospect. Well done lads!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The mutts, 8 Oct. 2003
This album is brilliant. There I've said it. The problem with Coldplay is that they have been embraced by the mainstream and those 'cool' people have forgotten why they liked them in the first place. They may no longer be cool but the album stands up. Clocks is a wonderful track, the piano is perfect as in The Scientist. In my place is a beautiful track in whatever era in which you release it. So that woman who used to be in Steps thinks they're great, I couln't care less. There is more than a bit of Dire Straits about Coldplay. While they were once percieved as cutting edge in the 70s, by the time the 80s ended they were hated. People, please remember why you buy an album, it's the music not because some git at NME has decided they don't like them anymore!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars If only i could give it 0 stars, 17 Sept. 2003
Hate to go against the grain, but i feel i have to. this remains the only album that i've ever owned that ive actually given away. commentators have referred to the streets as poetry, for my money it is nothing more than a sanitised view of cockneys and their way of life, in the same vain as that quite frankly dire film 'lock, stock'. real people just arent like the ones that the streets paint in this album. if you want a proper album go and buy the mercury award winner dizee rascal's album, but because this my friends is complete tripe.

The biggest question, no doubt will be: is this another pop record in the vain of 'loco'? the answer is a resounding 'no'. 'loco' wasn't a bad album, but i have to say, i listened to it solidly for about a month as all the tracks are pretty catchy, but it got put away in a drawer and was never spoken about again. call me a heretic but i think this one may be the flc's best release yet. we appear to have a wonderful fusion of the first two albums. i loved their debut, but actually prefered the second. the first track is very flc and is a wonderful catchy single, but it's the sort of track that wouldn't have looked out of place on 'loco'. 'you got a problem' is rather hip hoppy and alludes to 'come find yourself'. the rather lovely 'beautiful' and 'you just can't have it all' are laid back tunes that are more reminiscent of '100% colombian'. in short, the criminals have managed to fuse all of their best stuff into one brilliant album. i truly believe this their best album to date. i've actually met huey and he is the coolest man alive, thankfully he's now produced the coolest album, just buy it!!!
