5.0 out of 5 stars Hard working actor., 28 Nov 2013
This review is from: Toast of London [DVD] (DVD)
Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding might have been tempted by the millions to be made appearing on so called comedy panel shows. Here, though, is a guy who has stuck to what he knows best - Acting. Lets hear it for Steven Toast - An Actor!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice edition., 21 July 2012
This is an attractive edition of the shorter poems. The texts are well spaced and presented - annotations and editorial comments are there, and useful, but know there place! The latin translations, in good modern english, are very fresh and these in particular give the reader the sense that they are engaging with a living author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely translation., 15 May 2011
A courageous man who managed to produce his most beautiful, poised and sardonic poems when he already knew that Stalin was going to murder him. Funnily enough when I bought this from Amazon I was informed that other purchasers had also purchased Neruda's poetry - perhaps in a spirit of irony.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant performances., 5 Feb 2011
I've owned these CDs for a few years now and yet every time I put them on they sound as fresh as a daisy. Marvellous playing. Very bright. The performers have as much space as do jazz players and they use the space as creatively as the best of that genre. This band and these performances swing. Check elsewhere on Amazon for the lower priced issue of these Giardino Armonico recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous., 26 Dec 2010
A marvellous poet both of humanity and of the natural world - he's equally insightful and poignant about toads, cats, ravens and people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zappa's best?, 21 Mar 2010
It was seeing clips from this on 'Whistle Test' at the time of the movie's release that began my long enjoyment of Zappa's music. I know it's not a fan favourite but I've never been sure why. It contains, after all, some musically beautiful themes that he'd been working on for a few years previously, it blends rock with weird-classical and it contains real groupies. What's not to love? Tony Palmer gets to set the record straight on the commentary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hurrah for the Hippies!, 21 Mar 2010
The Fugs returned in the Eighties and did some live shows during which they made a musical stand against the rekindling of US imperialism under Reagan. Timely then and now. If you want the recording of 'CIA Man' you heard on the movie 'Burn After Reading' this is where you'll find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun in the fells., 24 Jun 2007
An enjoyable inducement to leave your armchair and head for the hills. The programme makers wisely make the tacit assumption that the inspired viewer who wants to walk up Haystacks, Castle Crag, Blencathra or Scafell Pike after watching these shows is sensible enough to take all the usual precautions - the appropriate clothing, the map, the Kendal Mint Cake! These programmes are about the challenge and the pleasure of trolling about in the fells - well done to all involved.
