2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 25 Oct 2013
This review is from: Gregorian Chants (Audio CD)
The sound quality on this recording seems very poor. Lots of crackle and hiss behind the singing. Also the sound appears acoustically flat, though presumably it was recorded in the monastery where the monks live so I've no idea why it should sound like it was also recorded in a small room.

There are no details on the CD about when the recordings were made - it sounds like they might have been made in the 1970s and then remastered recently (the famous "Canto Gregoriano" disc which I also have was recorded in the 1970s and 1980s, but its sound quality is much better)

The information in the flyer is also very generalised and hardly informative - it reads like it was put together from an internet search in the office one morning by a staff member who doesn't really know anything about this kind of music - I think there's only one sentence in the two page leaflet that actually refers to this particular recording. Also, although there are two CDs, each one contains less than 40 minutes of music in total.

In short, I was disappointed with this disc. Everything about it seems cheap. There are much better CDs of Gregorian Chant available, I'd recommend trying them instead

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The victorian attitude of the author (it was written in the 1880s) takes some getting used to, and there are a lot of essays about Eliot's philosophy and how she fits into the history of thought before we actually get to any reviews of the author's books themselves, but I found that it contains a lot of information about George Eliot's life and writings that was interesting and informative.

Anyone who likes George Eliot and wants to find out more about the philosophy and attitude behind her work could find material to chew on here.
