Lewis - Series Three [DVD] [2009]
Lewis - Series Three [DVD] [2009]
Dvd ~ Kevin Whately
Offered by Discs4all
Price: 10.22

5.0 out of 5 stars In its own right, 28 Oct 2013
Like many others have commented, I was a bit reluctant to watch this series given that it is somewhat of a follow-up to the unbeatable Morse. However, I am now on the 3rd series and this show has taken on a wonderful life of its own. It is tightly and intelligently written and Kevin Whately as Lewis has come out of the shadow of Morse. But the two jewels in the crown are the gorgeous Oxford backdrops and the emergence of Hathaway. Laurence Fox has a wonderfully subtle but powerful acting style that counters Whately without overtaking him. I look forward to ordering and watching the rest of the series.

This is a delightful film that contains little dialogue. The comedy is strictly slapstick but not so much so that it lapses into silliness. Something to brighten up your day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great--but a little misleading, 9 Sep 2013

I have been waiting a long time for this book to be updated. The original edition (and mine is battered and tattered from overuse because it has been such a valuable resource) contains outdated information (such as the short presentation which contains reference to the "Twin Towers") and this edition revises that along with a few other things, although otherwise it is mostly the same. The CDs are also easier to use, of course, than the tapes. To me, it is the best book out there for presentations, and some sections are also good just in themselves for practice, for example, in the language of graphs and for general English pronunciation. My only objection (which is why I gave it only 4 stars) is that the amazon title suggests that it is all US English. The CD tracks, however, are given in a variety of English accents. This is really not a problem (actually it is probably a good thing), but the "US" heading is misleading. Overall, though, I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 20 Jan 2013

As another review mentioned: with Lucy Lui and Gillian Murphy one would hope for something better. The summary of the film sounds like a "must" for film buffs. However, the film allusions are minimal and the story (of a crazy-type, footloose and fancy free woman enticing a nerdy guy into her world) was done so much better in "When Brendan Met Trudy." Watch that one instead of this fluff.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great "chase" film, 20 Jan 2013

This is a film I have been looking for for a long time and finally found it through amazon (through an Italian dealership). Of course, it comes with Italian subtitles which cannot be deleted. In spite of that, it is quite an enjoyable film about two small time crooks who get themselves unintentionally involved in a murder. Then, they are chased across Western Australia by two wise-cracking police detectives. Doesn't sound very original but the sharp dialogue, unusual staccato film cutting, and surprise ending make the film different and enjoyable. I don't know why, though,--probably copyright problems--this is not available in a completely English format.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some glitches, 20 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Windows 8 software is graphically beautiful and much easier to use than my old Windows 7. However--and it is a big however--often (but not always) the cursor jumps around (it happened while I was writing this review) and makes writing emails and other documents a little frustrating. I have been around the Help sites and have gotten various answers about how to solve this problem. Sometimes the suggestions work (but only for a short time--the cursor stops jumping around but then it returns again when I re-start the system). I would return this product, except that I need it for a current project; I am just hoping that Microsoft can fix this glitch in an upgrade soon. I am not the only one with this problem so Microsoft should be aware that this is not an isolated incident and develop a "patch" for it. Otherwise, I like the product a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy but fun, 9 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have seen almost all of the first two seasons of this show and most of the episodes have inane plot lines or plots that go nowhere and characters who come in for a few episodes and then are never seen again; some of the student characters look older than the teachers and are hardly ever in the classroom. Do they ever do homework? And, then, just when you think you cannot suspend disbelief any longer, the Glee Club breaks out in song and dance. Magically, they have changed into glitzy costumes and a small orchestra usually descends from somewhere out of nowhere to accompany them. Silly? Yes. Crazy? Yes. Improbable? Yes. But---A WHOLE LOT OF FUN. Just the kind of thing one needs in this silly, crazy, improbable world we live in.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mistakes and errors, 25 Aug 2011
This review is from: Advanced CAE Expert (Paperback)
I have had this book for more than two years and occasionally (very occasionally) have asked students to order it for additional practice in preparation for the Cambridge Advanced Exam. I cannot count the number of times the exercises have not been clearly explained or the answers to the exercises have been confusing or even downright wrong. Yesterday, I put the book in the garbage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just a football story, 27 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wonderful (but short) series that I first saw in the early 90s. Cheri Lunghi is great as the new manageress of a second division club. It is also a good reflection of prejudice on and off the pitch. The transfer quality could have been a bit better, but nonetheless the stories are good and the characters are well-developed.

A fantastically intelligent film that isn't for everybody. The trilingual Binoche is wonderful in her role. There is a lot of dialogue, especially in the beginning and some viewers might give up after the first 15 minutes, but I recommend sticking with it because there is quite a twist that develops later on.
