Painted Ponies: American Carousel Art
Painted Ponies: American Carousel Art
by William Manns
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Detailed Book on the Artistry of the Carousel, 22 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This beautiful book is great for the coffee table but also provides a more in-depth read detailing all the different styles, artists and carvers. The pictures are fantastic and much better than the online 'looking inside' preview which doesn't do justice to how amazing this book is. Well worth purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantasia ornament at last!, 9 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was really happy on opening this ornament to see that it was well made and larger than I expected. It really is unusual and an interesting piece. It looks fantastic. Its really difficult to find any ornaments based on Fantasia but fans of the film won't be disappointed with this. Although quite pricey, it really is an unique ornament.

4.0 out of 5 stars Professional and Good Quality Product, 5 Sept. 2014
I was looking to get into stamp collecting again and, not wanting to use the old hinges method and having failed to find anything relevant on the high street, I decided to take a chance and order this stockbook.

I am super happy with my purchase. The exterior of the book looks very professional and there are plenty of sturdy pages inside. This is a quality product. My only gripe was that one of the papers that you slip the stamps into wasn't glued down properly at one end so stamps just fell through. On another occasion, one of the slip pockets was slightly torn. Apart from these minor issues, I am very happy with this stockbook and would certainly purchase more if needed. I highly recommend this book to casual collectors as my stamps (mainly wildcats!) look great in it and it saves a lot of time trying to stick hinges on and get everything neat and straight. If you like things neat, tidy and organised (which I do!) then this is a worthwhile purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming, 19 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Water For Elephants [DVD] (DVD)
The story was what drew me to the film and, having missed it at the cinema, I was greatly looking forward to watching it. However, I found the characters, story and setting all curiously underwhelming. The love story angle of the film was generic. I could see the ending coming a mile off. Christopher Waltz was great in his role as the villain although he didn't have much to work with in terms of the script which was lacklustre. His final actions just seemed out of character and way too extreme compared to how he had been portrayed in the rest of the film. It felt as if the writers suddenly realised that they'd run out of time leaving the ending feeling slapdash and disappointing considering it was supposed to be the dramatic set piece of the film. The other actors were ok but nothing to write home about. There was a lack of any strong or memorable supporting characters, which, considering this was a film about the circus, was surprising.

At no one time did I feel any emotional connection to the characters and the execution of the story was a major let-down. The sense of spectacle and theatre was strangely lacking as was any attempt to convey the hardships of the time although they were mentioned in passing they weren't conveyed particularly strongly. Attempts to capture the romance of the circus, why the circus was so important to the average person or why the circus was so popular during this period just weren't explored to any meaningful extent. The one aspect which the film captured successful was the portrayal of the suffering of the circus animals showing their cramped living conditions, mistreatment and hunger, it truly must have been horrendous. Everything else just felt strangely flat. The love story, which is what the film was indeed to be, first and foremost, was incredibly weak and I was looking forward to a more involving film.

I'm not one for romantic films but I felt letdown by this movie. I watched this with my boyfriend and, towards the end, we both ended up watching the clock. A forgettable film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Did you see where I was hiding today?, 21 May 2014

She Ra was and still is my favourite 80s cartoon. Before I start, perhaps I should mention that I am more of a casual collector and bought this book as both a nostalgia trip as well as an aid to expanding upon my rather small collection. Happily, it works well in both capacities.

This guide is a slim but comprehensive compendium of information on all the She Ra toys which were released by Mattel during the heyday of the Masters of the Universe and Princess of Power series and covers variations by country, too. Looking back these toys certainly bring a smile to your face and have an innocence and charm to them that takes you straight back to the 80s. My only complaints about the book are that some of the images seem a little blurry and pixelated whilst others are perfect and crystal clear. It would also have been nice to see pictures of all of the accessories, books and magazines as opposed to having them simply in a checklist. Also, the boxes on the larger products such as the Crystal castle and horses have some stunning artwork and it would have been nice to have had these featured alongside the toys themselves (Although, I might be getting carried away here. Maybe what I really want is an official She Ra artbook? Mattel, are you listening?!) However, this guide offers up some fun facts and is very informative, for instance, did you know that The Horde were villains originally designed for the MOTU line and so do not appear as POP releases?

She Ra seems to have increased in popularity in Britain over the last few years. I don't know if there is any difference between the popularity of She Ra, both past and present, in America compared to Britain so I can't comment on the prices stated in the guide. This a great book and is worth purchasing if you are a fan or a collector.

Some details on this super cute and quirky notebook.

The notebook is about the size of an exercise book. Half of the pages are lined and the other half are plain pink. There is a small cat motif in the corner of each page. The covers, front and back, have 101 small cartoons of cats in familiar (and not so familiar) situations.

This notebook is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of any cat lover.

The only downside is that the are not many pages and the notebook is quite flimsy. However, the unique design makes this a worthwhile purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Original Score, 27 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Kick Ass 2 (Audio CD)
Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson have done an excellent job in creating an original score and reworking some of the music from the first film. Personal favourites include Convenience Store, Justice Forever, Hit Girl's Farewell, Senior Year and Warehouse Showdown. The music captures the tone of the relevant scenes perfectly. Great listening.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, not impressed..., 27 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Super [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
Watched this because of the favourable reviews comparing it to Kick Ass but was sorely disappointed. I can't fathom why this is compared to Kick Ass as it is absolutely nothing like it.

The central premise was interesting and had potential but I just felt like the film never got going. Most of the time, it felt like something was missing. There were some darkly funny moments involving Ellen Paige's character and some genuinely good parts such as the final confrontation and the conclusion of the story but, overall, it just left me cold. The attempts at comedy during what were serious scenes mostly just felt out of place and clumsy. I really wanted to love this film but ultimately it felt unfinished and awkward which is a shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars Naive Optimism, 30 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Kick-Ass 2 [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
Watched the first film the other day then made the mistake of watching Kick Ass 2 straight afterwards desperately hoping that this was going to be as awesome as the first. Its not but it certainly didn't deserve the savaging it got from the critics. Having said that, I love films that try and do something a little bit different from the usual so maybe that makes me incredibly biased in my praise for Kick Ass 2!

Firstly, I thought the film was controlled very well. I think a film like this has the potential to be either unintentionally hilarious and slip into parody or unrelentingly grim (like the source material) and I thought the balance was struck very well. The film is entertaining from start to finish. Kick Ass seems to have been side-lined in favour of the supporting cast which have some hilarious lines of dialogue. Although the script does take a nose-dive at times, it does get itself back on track. Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the 'first real life super villain' with the unmentionable name gives a great performance as a guy on the edge of sanity. How he comes by his new costume is just inspired. John Leguizamo, Iain Glen, Jim Carrey (Who plays it just right as Colonel Stars and Stripes) and Chloe Grace Moretz, even in her incredibly dull and formulaic school scenes (This whole High School saga seemed like a bit of a missed opportunity to do something more creative and original), are all worth mentioning.

However, it seemed as if the director had so much that he wanted to cram in that important events (Justice Forever, the warehouse showdown, the brutal personal attacks on Dave) are just glossed over in ten seconds flat diminishing their impact on the viewer and the characters. Just a little more time spent on these moments would have sufficed in bolstering their impact. Talking about editing, the extended scenes not included in the actual film are brilliant. The material would have really padded the film out as these scenes are actually worth seeing and allow us a little breathing space. As it stands the film isn't that long anyway so why these weren't added into the DVD release I find very strange.

Overall, this is an entertaining film which was a fun, crazy and unusual ride and I give it kudos for trying to do something a little bit different. Unlike a lot of films, Kick Ass 2 stands up to repeat viewing. I can think of worse ways to spend an evening than watching Kick Ass 2.
