4.0 out of 5 stars a good fun read, 15 Feb 2014

Some interesting ideas pursued with vigour. It's not long enough to really feel you know all the rules of this "other world", but as it's a series hopefully that will all be revealed.

A book about teenagers with cancer might seem an alternative throwing yourself off a cliff, but actually a really good read. Some of the invented adjectives are a bit annoying, but overall great characterisations and more than a few laughs. Laughs of the variety that take you unawares in the unlikeliest of places.

Hard to talk about this book without giving away some of the plot, but it was a book chosen by our book group and 6 of the 7 of us would have given up reading it until page 85ish. The book is pretentious in its philosphical references, without any explanation, and assumptions about the limitations of people's ability to see beyond thier own perspective. There are wonderful moments of suspended time and beauty, which are convincingly written and leave one with a sense of truth and beauty ( who could ask for more?) but just as you are enjoying a sense of light at the end of the tunnel there is a cave-in and permanent darkness is the finale. Apparently this book was at the top of the best seller list in France for weeks and weeks ... not sure why ... there were times when I could have quite happily slapped the author and said to her, "for goodness sake, a little kindness about the other people on this planet PLEASE." Essentially there are very good characterisations of the protaganists, but one never really cares about them. There is a description of a visit to a French restaurant that made me laugh out loud. There is a description of a moment in time when a piece of music is playing that made one consider the encapsulated notion of timeless beauty. I am not sorry that I read it, but I would find it hard to recommend to someone else.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sooooooooooo disappointed, 20 Jun 2012
It has been said before by others, but I too was excited to get to this book, hoping that the promise made by the author himself in the previous book (about different threads coming together and the plot continuing) would be kept. It was not. To be honest, I have now got to the stage where I'm not sure what I was waiting for in the first place. There are so many loose ends that it is hard to juggle all the stories coherently. Some resolution please.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling reading, 11 May 2012

I'm afraid it's that old chestnut ... a real page turner. Interestingly arranged so that each new chapter is from a different person's perspective, but that can be frustrating too when you want to know what happens next and sometimes have to wait several chapters ( and later on a whole book) to find out!!! The goriness is stomach churning, but there is poetry too.
