3.0 out of 5 stars intense and compelling (3.5/5), 28 Mar 2011
Russel Crowe plays John and Elizabeth Banks plays his wife.one night she is arrested for murder.after years of fighting with the legal system to try to free her,he learns she will be sent to prison for life in three days.now he must find a way to stop that from happening.this movie is full of suspense and intensity.it's tightly written(Paul Haggis wrote the screenplay)and well directed by Paul Haggis.the acting is superb from both Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks, who continues to show her flair as a dramatic actress.Daniel Stern had a small role, but was very impressive as well.this is a film i'd definitely watch again.for me,The Next Three Days is a 3.5/5

3.0 out of 5 stars five people are trapped in an elevator, and they are not alone (3.5/5), 28 Mar 2011
This review is from: Devil [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
i really liked this movie.the suspense builds nicely.there's a very tense atmosphere.you never know what going to happen next or who is ultimately responsible, until close to the end, which i didn't see coming.the acting is really good here,as is the direction.M. Night Shyamalan produced the film, but did not direct it.the story moves along at a good even pace.even the dialogue was pretty decent.i liked the fact that each of the characters had their own unique story.i found the movie quite compelling.i liked the fact that the motive for everything that happens in the film isn't revealed right off the bat,so you have to try to figure it out yourself.for me,Devil is a 3.5/5

2.0 out of 5 stars mildly entertaining, 27 Mar 2011
i found this movie mildly entertaining, with a few light chuckles here and there, but i don't think it wasn't as funny as i had hoped or expected it to be.there were no real 'laugh out loud, tears rolling down your face moments'.i think it was just a case of a lot of the jokes falling flat.it had some cute moments though, and of course there's a feel good ending.it's suitable for the whole family and kids will get a kick out of it.for me,it was just this side of boring.compared to a lot of animated films i've seen this one just doesn't stack up.having said that, however,it's far from being awful.it's just not great.for me,Despicable Me is a 2.5/5

Unstoppable [Blu-ray]

3.0 out of 5 stars entertaining enough, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: Unstoppable [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
though i did enjoy this dramatic action thriller,i thought it was missing something.there was drama,to be sure, and plenty of action.but it was not as thrilling as i had hoped or expected.there was enough tension to keep me watching, but none of the 'edge of your seat 'or nerve shredding intensity.it wasn't boring,by any means but compared to the tension in Crimson Tide, for instance(also directed by Tony Scott)there was no comparison.Scott really reigned himself in here(which he usually has trouble doing(see Domino)but in this case,he could have let loose a bit.still, the movie was entertaining enough.for me,Unstoppable is a 3/5

3.0 out of 5 stars solid remake, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Karate Kid [2010] [DVD] (DVD)
i enjoyed this remake of the 1984 original.it's a bit more fleshed out than the original, although it may be a bit too long.this one's actually about Kungfu, not Karate, and it shows the definite differences between the two disciplines.Jackie Chan plays the handy man role made famous by Pat Morita in the original.Jaden Smith(Son of Will and Jada Pinket Smith)plays the role made famous by Ralph Machio.i'd say this movie compares favourably to the original in all aspects except one:it doesn't quite have the same crowd pleasing intensity.at least i didn't feel it.still,it's well acted and well directed and looks good.for me,The Karate Kid is a 3.5/5

3.0 out of 5 stars engaging and compelling, 27 Mar 2011
this is a tense,atmospheric,drama/sci-fi/thriller.it deals with a topical issue, one that has been done before, but it works here.the issue is one of cloning.and the ethic and moral issues involved.it's a thought provoking movie and no matter what side of the fence you're on regarding this particular issue,it should engage you.it moves at a deliberate pace in order to to keep a tense atmosphere.the acting is solid all around, but Delphine Chanéac stands out as Dren.if you're expecting an action packed movie with lots of things blowing up,you should look elsewhere.but if you're looking for something engaging and compelling, check this one out.for me,Splice is a 3.5/5

3.0 out of 5 stars a thoughtful character study, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: The American [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
some people may find this film slow.granted,it's not action packed.but it's not intended to be.i think it's more of a character study than anything else.George Clooney plays an assassin living abroad who agrees to one last job,and then wants out of the business for good.the film deals with his internal conflict, and shows what a lonely sad existence the character has.it's a bleak existence,to be sure.the pacing is very deliberate, but the film isn't what i would call boring.it is well acted and well directed.the tone of the movie matches the existence of the main character.if you don't have a lot of patience, this movie is not for you.otherwise,id say, give it a try.for me,The American is a 3/5

4.0 out of 5 stars wall to wall action (4.5/5), 27 Mar 2011
my friend and i thoroughly enjoyed Salt from the get go.it's basically wall to wall action.yes there are no doubt plot holes, and logic gaps, but it's all about the action here.and it's so much fun.plus it's so fast paced, you don't really have time to think about logic or plot, unless you really want to.we just went with it and had a blast.and actually the story is generally well written and has some very clever sequences.if you can just turn your brain off for the allotted run time, you should really enjoy yourself.but if you need you movies to have a high degree of logic and realism, this likely isn't your cup of tea.for me, though,i loved it. 9/10

The Town (Blu-ray + DVD)
The Town (Blu-ray + DVD)
Dvd ~ Ben Affleck
Offered by Discs4all
Price: 15.15

4.0 out of 5 stars extended version, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Town (Blu-ray + DVD) (Blu-ray)
i really enjoyed this movie.it's the second film directed by Ben Affleck, who also stars in the film.i thought it was well written.the dialogue was very good.the movie flowed very well from one scene to another.there is a fair amount of action which is well done, and there is lots of tension and suspense.the acting is good all around, but i thought Jeremy Renner was really impressive as James Coughlin as was Blake Lively as Krista Coughlin.the Boston accent is pretty thick at times,so you might want to use caption or subtitles so you don't miss anything.there is a fair amount of strong language here,as well as some nudity.and of course being a crime drama, there is some violence, but it's not a violent as you would expect.the extended version clocks in at 150 minutes compared to the theatrical version of 125 minutes.i can't compare the two,as i only viewed the extended cut,but i will say it never found it boring or slow.for me,The Town (extended cut) is a 4/5

4.0 out of 5 stars i wasn't blown away,but i did enjoy it, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: Black Swan [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
i wasn't blown away by this film, but i did enjoy it.for me,it was well acted, creepy and bizarre. i guess you could classify it a horror/thriller.it might make you cringe in some spots.if you're squeamish, this might not be the best movie for you.but this is also a movie that really makes you think.you never really knew what's real and what's fantasy.Natalie Portman really immerse herself in the role and is very convincing.and the film is never boring.there is always something going on.if you like your movies straight forward with everything laid out neatly, this probably isn't the movie for you.otherwise,i'd say give it shot.for me, The Black Swan is a 4/5
