The Ransom of Brownie (Bubba Book 6)
The Ransom of Brownie (Bubba Book 6)
Price: £0.77

5.0 out of 5 stars the action is fast and funny, and the language is clean and wholesome, 10 Aug 2014

Another chaotic episode in the life of Bubba sees Brownie on top form.
This time, Bubba does not even need emergency treatment - a real miracle for him!

As in all these books, the action is fast and funny, and the language is clean and wholesome.
I would say, suitable for older kids as well as adults ... except that they would learn some really smart tricks from Brownie.
Parents beware!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shetland as we never knew it., 9 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent murder mystery, set in modern-day Shetland.
The plot is intricate, and the characters are intriguing.
The descriptions of the scenes and way of life ring so true to life, it is obvious that the author has lived there and understands the people.
A surprisingly satisfying read.
Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A romance for the most unromantic soul, 9 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am not really a fan of soppy romance stories, so I found this book totally surprising.
It is loosely based on Jane Austen's "Emma" and on the film "When Harry Met Sally" ...
How can the author reconcile two such different stories? You'll have to read the book to find out.
Let's just say that it is by turns hilarious, cringeworthy and ultimately satisfying.
Just like real life, in fact.
Do read it ... you'll be glad you did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly true to life ... I hope!, 8 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This comedy series had only one short season, but I feel it deserved more.
It is funny, witty and refreshingly free of stereotypes.
Basically a 'fish out of water' tale, it is worth watching a few times for the sly one-liners.
Do enjoy it - we did!

The Painted Lady: An Inspector McLevy Mystery (An Inspector McLevy Mystery Series)
Price: £0.69

5.0 out of 5 stars Start here, new readers., 8 May 2014

This is a short story in the Inspector McLevy series.
I read it in one sitting, as once again I was so drawn into the inspector's Edinburgh Victorian world.
If you are wanting to get a flavour of that world, this would be a good introduction.

Maxwell's Ride (Mad Max Book 6)
Maxwell's Ride (Mad Max Book 6)
Price: £3.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Heigh-ho, White Surrey!, 8 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very satisfying excursion into Peter Maxwell's mad, mad teaching world.
As always, it is hard to see how he gets to do any teaching at all, as he gallops off on his rusty steed to rescue sundry fair maidens and brings Justice to England's south coast yet again.
Plenty of guffaws at both teachers and students guaranteed too.
Nice to spend time in MaxWorld again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Colonial times., 8 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a book very much of its time, that time being 1930s Africa.
It points up the attitudes of both the 'ruling' officials, and the native population in a sometimes hilarious way.
Although quite a few things in the book are not politically correct, and some would be totally unacceptable today,
it is not malicious at all.
I did enjoy it overall nonetheless, but then I am an elderly Englishwoman.
I can remember when such attitudes were commonplace, though I am very relieved that is not so today.
