Compact, High Quality Lens, 12 Mar 2010
I picked up this lens to complement the 20mm F1.7 pancake that was bundled with my GF1. By using a prime (single focal length) lens such as this one, you give up the versatility of a zoom. But in return you end up with a lens that lets in 4 times as much light at 45mm as the Lumix 14-45 kit lens does at 45mm. That goes a long way to improve image quality in dim lighting. The relatively bright aperture of F2.8 also gives you the option of blurring the background, isolating the subject. This Leica branded lens features optical image stabilization for use on Panasonic Micro Four Thirds bodies (Olympus has stabilization built into their camera bodies). There's a convenient focus limiter switch which blocks the lens from focusing in the macro range. This results in increased focusing speeds for non-macro photography.
Overall the lens is well designed with good build quality. It's wonderfully compact while delivering sharp and contrasty images with pleasing out of focus areas. This is a macro lens, so it also allows you to explore an aspect of photography not often possible with conventional lenses. It would have gotten a 5 star rating if it had been a faster, F2.0 lens. That would have made the Panasonic Leica 45mm Macro a dream lens. But it's good as it is.
