Sehr gut!, 23 April 2010
I purchased this box set mainly for the DVD, which is a compilation of two superb (if allegedly much-overdubbed) 1983 performances on consecutive nights at the Hammy Odeon. The DVD adds Cry for the Nations, Rock You to the Ground, Red Sky and Looking for Love to the original VHS track listing and the picture quality is very good.
The CDs are great too, though I'm only halfway through them as I write. Michael is not famed for varying his setlist, and the four CDs included here show that, even in the early years of MSG, this was already starting to be the case. Given the wealth of great material that Schenker has to draw upon, it always astonishes me that he never plays the vast majority of it live. Nevertheless, some of the guitar work here is simply astonishing - Lost Horizons on the 1980 disc is a particular highlight for me. The sound is not a million miles from that of 'proper' live releases and the slightly rawer, more authentic nature of the recording gives added listening pleasure. Cozy Powell's drums sound fantastic. Be warned, though, that Gary Barden's vocals do not stand up to close aural scrutiny. Much as I love him, on these CDs Gary occasionally sounds like a cat having something extremely unpleasant done to it.
The packaging is good and overall this is a terrific trip down memory lane for MSG fans of a certain vintage. Highly recommended. Hope the Schenk is getting some decent royalties though...
