4.0 out of 5 stars Not Nikita, 11 Jan. 2005
This review is from: The Assassin [1993] [DVD] (DVD)
I saw Nikita before I saw this movie. It, unlike most Hollywood re-makes, manages to capture the style and feel of the original. As a result it is still a movie to watch, especially if you don't want to watch the French original. There are insufficient extras to make it an easy choice between the two versions, so it comes down to a personal choice. I bought both the original and this version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pastiche of music genres, 15 Oct. 2004
This review is from: Scissor Sisters (Audio CD)
Listening to this album you will recal many different music styles, from Elton John to the Bee Gees. Although the album is a pastiche, it is very listenable. I have it on the auto-changer in the car, so listen to it quite regularly, by doing so it has grown on me. The fact that it is a pastiche does not detract from the enjoyment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hopper-americana, 5 Sept. 2004
This book is an ideal introduction to Hopper as an artist. It fails, only slightly, in that it doesn't outline, sufficiently, the role played by his wife. Nor does it say anything about his domineering attitude towards her. If you are looking for something from which to build a proper appreciation of the art, rather than the man, this is a good place to begin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful despite presentation, 20 Jun. 2004
A useful book that would benefit from being better presented. I had looked at this in book shops and not bought it mainly due to the presentation. Having bought it from Amazon because it was cheap, I am surprised how good it is. The information is invaluable, especially if, like me, you are a novice. Do not be put off by the poor presentation or print quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5* Read, 20 Jun. 2004
This readable treatise on the US empire is accessible to both the academic and non-academic alike. It should be required reading of all US citizens, many of whom do not understand why the world does not automatically love them. This explains the thinking behind, and development of, the US empire across the globe. It also examines the reasons behind the way the US looks at its empire building. A challenging, thought provoking book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Movie, 20 Jun. 2004
This review is from: Irreversible [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
This powerful film shows some of the most disturbing violence of any movie. However, it is worth seeing for its provocative imagery. It is disturbing for its portrayal of how extreme acts can be undertaken by otherwise mild mannered people, and how these can be provoked by the smallest events.
This movie should be on everyone's 'to see' list. The dark tones show an empathy for the plot that is seldom seen in other movies.
See it now, in the original form before Hollyood re-makes it and softens it.
