3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but disjointed, 3 Nov 2013

I was looking forward to watching Empire and understanding far more about our imperial roots. The series did allow me to understand more in an engaging way however the structure of the episodes meant it lacked continuity and jumped about alot. I feel the series would of been easier to follow if it had followed a timeline of the empires growth and fall rather than topic based headings that loosely held the episodes together. However one to watch for those looking to understand more about our imperial past

5.0 out of 5 stars How to really understand our country, 3 Nov 2013

A fanatastic series that covers the whole of the 20th century in great detail and the events that shaped the United Kingdoom to where we are now. Made just before the financial crash it takes us from the death of Queen Victoria up to the Blair years of New Labour.

It picks out events from each decade or so of the 20th century to show how our country evolved and the series is brought to life by Marr's highly effective delivery style. I would recommend it throughly

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the effort, 3 Nov 2013

This review is from: A History of the World (Paperback)
The book has depth and over the early period of mankind can be slow paced. But read it in full and the context it sets in the early chapters forms a real understanding on how far we have progressed as a species and also damningly how little we have progressed in other areas.

The book frames key areas of progression for mankind around key historical figures and the fact that war has so often created new situations and evolvement. The summary that in terms on power and politics so little has changed over thousands of years in terms of how we as humans use these for our ends is sobbering but all too true when one considers the world around us in the 21st century

MR Nastase the Autobioiography
MR Nastase the Autobioiography
by Ilie Nastase
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars All our yesterdays - great memories, 11 Aug 2013

Nastase was the original entertainer and bad boy of tennis. He lifted the profile of tennis in the early 70s with his great tennis combined to his explosive and colourful personality.
This book is very well written and covers his life and career recounting his great matches, the big bust ups he had on court and his checkered personal life. He is honest about his own failings both as a player and person and what comes through is a really endearing account of a man who at heart just wanted to entertain and be loved by the public.

A great book for anyone who can remember those great matches from the 70s and the players who made the era so memorable

The Outsider: My Autobiography
The Outsider: My Autobiography
by Jimmy Connors
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 12.91

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL A TENNIS ICON, 28 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jimmy was my childhood hero who greatly shaped my beliefs in being resiliant and always working as hard as possible to make the very best outcomes you can. I thank him deeply for being that life inspiration to me
Whilst the book does not go into great depth on his classic matches that does not matter as we can all recall them and what is fantastic is the total and unapologetic honesty he displays throughout the book about the the many scraps he got into during his career. Also the heart warming affection he had for his mum and two mum (grandmother)shows the roots of where the type of player he was came from.
For all Connors fans and indeed tennis fans this is an absolute must read.

Doctor Who - Complete Specials (The Next Doctor/ Planet of the Dead/ Waters of Mars & Winter Specials) [DVD]
Dvd ~ David Tennant

5.0 out of 5 stars great ending to the 10th doctor incarnation, 9 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some truly great episdoes in this set. Waters of Mars is a real favourite of mine and sets up the season ending climax of End of Time so well. Tennant is superb as ever and the stories are written in a way that draws the viewer into the emotions of the main character but also in a way that does not get too clever for their own good , which has been the failing since Steven Moffat took over writing for the 11th doctor
Doctor Who Confidentials are also great, especially the hour long version covering Tennants final turn. All very emotional and a fine tribute to a great doctor

4.0 out of 5 stars A leader like no other, 9 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst he was uncnventional and no doubt a difficult person, Steve was truly a leader and visionary who changed the world around us fundamentally. This book whilst brief compared to the book by Walter Issacson gives the reader enough of an insight to see how both Jobs and Apple evolved into the force that brough us the ground breaking i products. Well worth a read for those who dont want a blow by blow account of his life but do want enough insight to understand the man

Price: 6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars motivation for 21st century, 24 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Pink really challenges conventional thinking about carrot and stick motivation techniques in business. He contends that really motivation comes from a human need for autonomy, mastery and above all a sense of purpose in what we do. I recommend this book highly for all people managers in challenging our deep rooted beliefs about how we go about managing people

Servants of the People: The Inside Story of New Labour
by Andrew Rawnsley

4.0 out of 5 stars Great insight into new labour early years, 24 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellently researched book that shows the tensions in new labour was there from almost day one of the government. It is fasinating to see the roots of the Blair - Brown develop into the end game we all now know. For those who have read end of the party about new labours fall by the same author I would highly recommend this book as well
