5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST BLUES ALBUMS OF ALL TIME -HERITAGE BLUES ORCHESTRA !, 30 July 2015

What can you say, this is one of the great albums of all time, Paul Jones said it was one of the best in twenty eight years of broadcasting his BBC Blues Show. All I can say to that is this is one album you've just got to get, it is amazing throughout. The version of Catfish Blues, recorded many times over the years has simply never been this good, the groove the band pull, the horns, the deep roots guitar make this an absolute standout on an album chock full of them in fact twelve tracks to feast on again and again. The album in it's style of music covers several bases, from blues, to African sounds, to the styles of New Orleans to the Mississippi Hill Country, to the DElta, to soul, swing spitituals, to work songs. The honour of the heritage of the music is there but also full of great ideas and some equally superb new songs by the band. The main three artists of Bill Sims Jr.,Chancy Sims (she has such a great voice), and Junior Mack, also including guests such as Bruno Wilhelm on sax, the musicianship is throughout simply amazing. From the opening song, rooted i the original blues tradition, 'Clarkesdale Moa', evolves throughout, The cover of Eric Biib's 'Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag YOur Spirit Down' may just be the best version yet of this gospel based song, The simple guitar opening to 'Get Right Church' sets up the drum rhythms that just get thos feet tapping with it's infectious beat, as does 'Chilly Jordan' that gospel feel, that beat that wants it to never end. Alongside the upbeat and invigoration songs the slower and power of songs such as 'Hard Times', 'C Line Woman' are pure indulgence to enjoy again and again.
This is an album of live, of great music, great artists and musicians at the very top of their game, an astounding blues album that covers several boundaries but is never less than inspiring for any minute of it's playing time. It finishes and boy ! you just want more, five stars just don't do justice to an album this good.

5.0 out of 5 stars EUGENE HIDEAWAY BRIDGES, ANOTHER GREAT BLUES ALBUM -UNMISSABLE !, 30 July 2015

This review is from: Coming Home (Audio CD)
Seeing Eugene Bridges again this year I was reminded what a great bluesman he is, the voice like Sam Cooke, the guitar style reminds one of B B KIng, all round truly nice person to meet as well. So it's been filling the gaps in my collection of his recordings, I first came across him in 1985 as part of the Big Joe Turner Memphis Blues Caravan, but since going solo he's produced a series of absolutely superb albums, the latest being 2015's 'Hold On' , a five star album by any standards. This album under review is from 2005, containing twelve tracks, all self written and oerformed by his own band plus a few guests, recorded in Dripping Springs, Austin, Texas. A range of straight blues, upbeat songs and a couple of great blues/soul ballads.
The production throughout is superb, the playing equally superb, and an album that should never be overlooked if first your into the modern blues scene, and secondly if you like good music. Bridges should by any fairness be considered a modern blues great, a major talent on the scene, and here's an album more than worthy of this recognition. An album to cherish and enjoy day after day.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T HOLD ON GET IT NOT, EUGENE 'HIDEAWAY' BRIDGES, WHAT AN ALBUM !, 17 July 2015

This is a fantastic new album by one of the best artists in the blues today, the voice and the guitar plus a very good songwriter indeed. I heard some of these songs live by him before the album came out. If you grab one real blues album this year make it this one. Using his band of keyboards, bass and drums plus some real tasty horns and you have this release. The title track 'Hold On A Little Bit Longer' will have your toes tapping from the outset, the hook will stick and you'll soon be singing along, absolutely hits the mark live, one to get the dancers and boppers going. His voice is similar to Sam Cooke, his guitar style much like B B King, his father, who sadly died earlier this year was also a bluesman and preacher, and actually played with King several years ago.
The songs, a very generous fifteen of them kicks off with 'One More Time' could have come out of the Sam Cooke days but is like every song here from the pen of Eugene, one of the nicest folk around as well. The upbeat of 'V8 Ford', as is the third track 'Special Lady'. Songs of places he's been or lived by, raised in Louisiana, moved later to Texas hence 'Long Way From San Antone', or 'Along The Navajo Trail', or of his visit to Australia 'Take Me Back To Perth'. Then the warning to a wife 'If You Don't Change Your Ways, You'll Have To Change Your Name'. The title track with some taaty slide guitar from UK's Micky Moody. As I've said this is a superb album throughout it's 56 minute playing, an album that gets better with every play. This is blues that lifts the spirits, is enjoyable and gets into the groove that great albums should.
Eugene Hideaway Bridges, is one of the finest artists around today, do get to see him live, you'll love just as much as this wondrerful album, full of goodies, songs that will be around a long time, one of the very best blues albums for some time, with more than a helping of the best in soul. Just put on the track 'Special Lady' the backing singers will soon have you joining in with them, and oh ! those horns, Yes this is very definitely a five star slice of blues magic !

5.0 out of 5 stars MATT EDWARDS, A NEW GENERATION OF THE BLUES ...AND MUCH MORE !, 3 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Follow The Plan (Audio CD)
Matt Edwards is one hugely talented singer/musician. This is a great debut album that will grow in value as he rises in the music industry. He writes his own songs, is a very tasty guitar player, influenced by the blues but his music is so varied there's something here for everyone. He has a great voice, and with a new album coming out as well (an absolute cracker of a follow up), this young man deserves to be as big as Joe Bonamassa, here this and you'll see what I mean. The sound of this as I say debut set is top drawer all the way. Live well, you got to catch him. Saw him supporting Buddy Whittington where he was simply amazing, then at a festival again another great set, this is definitely one very fine and exiting talent your going to hear much more of.
A great debut, some superb songs by one highly talented musician, !

5.0 out of 5 stars DOUG MACLEOD WITH AN ALBUM TO TREASURE BY AN AMERICAN NATIONAL BLUES TREASURE !, 13 May 2015

This review is from: Unmarked Road (Audio CD)
I gut into Doug MacLeod's music two or three years ago, how I missed it I just don't know he simply is one of the most enjoyable and talented performers on the world blues circuit today. Now nine albums later I've got a copy of this album from the late nineties, and again it's superb. Doug or as he seems to be better known as Dubb, plays acoustic and resonator guitar, possesses the perfect voice for his songs, his humour and side comments make each song have it's own life. He varies his style, take the title track along with the soaring background voice of his female backing singer. He uses just the basics of a band some delicious double bass, the gentlest beat of the drums, the odd track with added piano. Recorded on the AudioiQuest label the production is faultless, every one of the included twelve tracks fits like a perfect glove.
If you like blues, guitar playing that's not hard driving electric but with a feel that draws every tone out of the instrument, then Doug is your man. This album is one fabulous place to start, just a wonderfully enjoyable album by a master of his art !

5.0 out of 5 stars MUD MORGANFIELD, ONE TRULY GREAT SLICE OF CHICAGO BLUES !, 13 May 2015
I saw Mud Morganfield live recently and he is simply amazing as a singer ,performer and heir to the Morganfield blues legacy. Mud is well and truly the real deal, son of the great Muddy Waters, and this simply wonderful album was my album of the year for 2014, looking again at some of his father's songs, some also not so well known. These are not a copy but a great artist taking these great songs, getting harmonica legend Kim Wilson on board, adding an absolutely cracking band, and guess what you come up with an album as good as it gets. Not a duff track here, but solid pulsating Chicago blues played and sung in the great traditions of the music, superbly produced and played. Music to move those feet too, songs that are the true heart of the blues by one of the modern era's greatest exponents. You may know the songs, or at least some of them , but don't miss out this isn't a covers album but a son doing homage to his father, as the title says 'To Pops', Muddy would have been thrilled with this that's for sure. Live Mud is awesome, and that transfers to this fantastic album through each and every track. Utterly unmissable album to enjoy again and again !

5.0 out of 5 stars KING KING HAVE PRODUCED AN ABSOLUTE CRACKER OF AN ALBUM !, 13 May 2015
This review is from: REACHING FOR THE LIGHT (Audio CD)
Album number three, and the band have stepped up to another level with what can only be described as 'the best yet'. A band leads by one of the best voices round in Alan Nimmo, a great guitarist as well. The key to this awesome set is the quality of music, it's blues but it's more than that, it is simply great music by one fabulous four piece band. The production throughout is clear, the band are a solid unit blending perfectly together, the songs other than an incredibly good cover of Paul Carrack' & Charlie Dore's 'Just A Little Lie',. From the opening'Hurricane', you know your going to be swept up by one of the best albums you'll hear by anyone this year. 'You Stopped The Rain', 'Lay With Me' and 'Stranger To Love' prove the level of song writing the band, and it is a band, not a singer and his backing group, that's why it works so well. See them live and you'll rush to see them again and again.
A truly superb release by one of the UK's finest bands, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

5.0 out of 5 stars ERIC CLAPTON, SAY NO MORE, THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS, CELEBRATE WITH SLOWHAND !, 13 May 2015

This review is from: Forever Man (Audio CD)
Eric Clapton, over fifty years as one of the greatest guitarists in the world, one of the best ever to come out of the UK, to pack audiences in all over the world, fifty years of great music centred on his love and passion for the blues, which simmers at the heart of everything he plays. This is the latest, and I think best compilation he has ever put out, outside of the Crossroads box sets of some years ago now. This new set brings the whole thing nicely up to date, including tracks from his two most recent albums on his own label, including the appeciation to J.J.Cale, who actually has a couple of duets as does B.B. King who has three.
The set is disc 1 'Studio', Disc 2 'Live' and Disc 3, 'Blues'.
The studio tracks, eighteen of them from the opening 'Get Over It', through songs such as 'Travellin' Alone', 'Believe In Life', 'Bad Love' 'Pretending' is proof if any were neeeded of what a supreme artist he is.'Change The World', is one of the greatest tracks ever, and is included herer in over 73 mins of popular music, hits and blues.
Then we get the live set, and it's mixed to sound like one concert, the electric, a centre part of acoustic then electric again to close, very much in the format of a current Clapton gig. There's two with Steve Winwood from the Madison Square Garden gig, otherwise from the opening Cream classic (here by Eric's band ) 'Badge' trough liove favourites such as 'Worried Life Blues',Cocaine','Going Down Slow', a stunning acoustic playing of 'Walking Blues', to 'Sunshine Of Your Love','Wonderful Tonight', and 'White Room', fourteen tracks in all at nearly eighty minutes, is absolute Clapton magic and worth the cover price on it's own, but wait there's yet more to this set.
Disc three is all blues, and track after track proves why he remains one of the absolute blues greats, from the opening cover of Bo Diddlewy's 'Before You Accuse Me', through songs from the Robert Johnson songbook , including tracks from the Sessions that was previously only available with the DVD set of the Johnson sessions, Then tracks from his blues only chart album 'From The Cradle', a couple with B.B.King, one with J.J.Cale (Sporting Life Blues), This disc is 72 minutes of blues at it's very best., and makes a wonderful third disc to a set brimming with absolutely awesome performances. Not been a Clapton fan, get this you will be,If you are and already have the tracks on the other albums, this is worth investing in, the whole package sounds superb, the notes interesting, photos throughout his career, Most of all this is a stunningly good three disc set by an absolute master, and should not be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars NILS LOFGREN, TEN DISCS FULL OF WONDERFUL MUSICAL TREASURES !, 26 April 2015
This review is from: Face The Music (Box) (Audio CD)
Simply put this is the greatest box set I've ever bought, I got it seeing Nils Lofgren on his UK tour earlier this year, and one of the best live gigs I've ever attended. Nils is an amazing singer / guitarist (you don't play with the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young if your not ). This set of ten discs 9 x CD and a DVD, plus a full length book, the packaging is faultless, plus Nils has personally signed and numbered each one. Over £100 seems a lot till you see how much wonderful music you get for your money, it's totally priceless, not one week track on the entire collection. The DVD full of live performances throughout his career, solo and as part of the amazing Grin band. Much of it not seen before, two of the CD's arte also of not up to now released songs Nils found while putting this set together.
This elease is the reason why box sets came along and is utterly a setr of the highest quality, hours of listening pleasure by one of the great musicians and artists of our time. A really nice man as well, who stayed behind after a sold out gig to meet folk and sign every item people wanted. Do yourself the biggest of favour and treat yourself to this wonderous set it's an absolute classic, a musical milestone not to be missed. Shout it out NILS LOFGREN, A GREAT AND WONDERFUL TALENT, THE STUFF OF TRUE LEGENDARY STATUS !
