5.0 out of 5 stars THORBJORN RISAGER & THE BLACK SHADOW, LIVE AND LOVING IT !, 16 Oct. 2015
This review is from: Songs From The Road (Audio CD)
Wow ! this came as a very pleasant surprise, All the way from Copenhagen Denmark, but could have merged from the Delta or Chicag. This is a real deal slice of blues by one great band. Live in Bonn recorded in April this year, on the back of the bands well received 'Too Many Roads' CD. The band includes two guitar including it's leader, keys, bass and drums, that's not all because there's a cracking three piece horn section that ad fullness to the whole sound, and two female backing singers. So it's a big band with a big sound. Thorbjorn has that depth of voice that suits the blues like a glove, full and rich. Take a listen to the song just before the closer ''I Won't Let You Down', joined by one of the ladies and just guitar this is a simply awesome performance. The boogie piano on 'The Straight And Narrow Line', will have your feet tapping, one of those to pull up the rug too and dance the night away. The strength of the album is not only the high quality of songs, all but two originals as well, but the different styles all through the set. The cover are great takes on Muddy Waters blues classic, 'Baby Please Don't Go', and the song that will always be linked with the late great B.B.King in 'Let The Good Times Roll', both are very well played, and although both have been recorded more times than I could mention here still sound fresh, mind you have to ask just how many recordings do we need of blues songs like this? Also a standout is the slide guitar playing throughout the set, very nice touch and not full of your usual notes which is noce.
You could say much more but the taste is in the eating, and like a nice meal this is full of wondrful and enjoyable flavours. The DVD is a generous 100 minutes that has five more songs than the CD which itself is full length hour plus. So all in all a great double disc, by a superb and emerging band, its leader oh that great voice, and live just about as good as it gets. You just gotta hear this one, a name and band to watch !

5.0 out of 5 stars STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN RETURNS TO HIS TEXAS ROOTS, AND HOW !, 15 Oct. 2015

This review is from: Live..Texas '87 (Audio CD)
As the sleeve notes for this double album says'Having finally conquered his addictions, SRV embarked on a tour to support the 'Live Alive' album. With Double Trouble comprising Reese Wynans, Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, this live show was recorded for radio in San Antonio, and what a show. Stevie is at the very top of his form as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, the opening two tracks are instrumentals that will have you gasping as he pours one solo after another, before an extended solo opening to 'Ain't Gone N Give Up On Love'. The recording quality is fine, and it's been digitally remastered, and like most of these radio broadcasts you get the intro's and tuning up before the music kicks in. This is a pure uncut concert, and live sound is never perfect. If a fan then these recordings are unmissable, they prove again and again just what an awesome artist he was and why still today he so sadly missed. Take one listen to his version of 'Superstition' (the old Stevie Wonder Song), SRV probably plays the best version you'll ever hear of it. Add 'Willie The Wimp', 'Dirty Pool', 'Couldn't Stand The Weather','Life Without You' to your playlist welll..enough said, he never played things the same twice. On the cover it says it's an incendiary set, that about sums up this slice of blues by the master at his very best......Great it's got a release at last !

5.0 out of 5 stars BEN POOLE LIVE AND IN FANTASTIC FORM !, 7 Oct. 2015
This review is from: LIVE AT THE ALBERT HALL (Audio CD)
Ben Poole is a major new talent, a great soul filled voice, plus an ace guitarist. Already incredibly popular on the live blues scene, people have been talking of his live shows for quite some time, and this 'live'album proves it throughout. Recorded at The Royal Albert Hall' bt the BBC for the London blues festival, this is Ben Poole at his very best, not only that by this is one of the best live sets you'll hear in a very long time. Backed by his regular touring band, the sound is tight, honed on the road, a mix of covers and originals make this a superbly crafted and highly enjoyable gig by surely a future major headline act on the music scene.
You can't say more than get hold of this amazing live show , then go see Ben Poole live !

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE BLUES OF TODAY JUST A STUDIO ROMP !, 7 Oct. 2015
This review is from: NEW MILLENNIUM BLUES (Audio CD)
Well, well, well, Lenny's got the blues, but this is not that good an album, nothing new on offer, pretty average covers that sound like a pub blues band. The band play well enough but it's like a formula but lacks soul of any kind. It's getting airplay because of Lenny Henry, that's about it, there's so many great talents in the UK playing blues full of new ideas, new songs far superior to this. I've no doubt of Lenny's love of the music, but gathering a group of session musicians playing this is not new millenium blues, it's a few average covers and none to interesting new ones. All in all very disappointing album, listen to artists such as Ben Poole, Ian Seigal, Aynsley Lister, Ian Parker if you want new millenium blues played well.

5.0 out of 5 stars ERIC BIBB HAS PRODUCED AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC ALBUM OF LEADBELLY SONGS !, 5 Oct. 2015

This review is from: Lead Belly's Gold (Audio CD)
Eric Bibb is one of the finest blues based artists in the world. A succession of superb albums, a voice that is simply outstanding and the consumate acoustic guitarist. Here on his latest album we find him performing some Huddie Leadbetter classics, eleven at a live gig and six more studio takes. These are not so much covers as reinterpretations of these great songs with a group of top class musicians. The whole album is a delight, an absolute listening pleasure, for me his best since the wonderful Booker's Guitar album a couple of years back. If this album doesn't pull awards as best traditional release I'll be amazed it's that good. With the harmonica of J.J. Milteau on this set it just couldn't get any better, blues at it's absolute and musical best. Leadbelly left a treasure trove of great songs, and here's a selection of them, songs you may well know well, but these versions are just so good you just cannot miss it.
This is sure to be among my albums of the year and will go down as a blues classic. You must hear this to appreciate just how amazingly good it is. Five stars just isn't enough for a release this good !

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT MORE CAN YOU SAY THAN THIS IS -STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - LIVE AND STUNNING !, 3 Sept. 2015
This release is a fabulous reminder of what a fantastic talent SRV was, thank goodness his amazing music is still with us. One of if not the greatest rock blues player of them all, he was simply amazing, over a few years, all too short he left a legacy of guitar based music it will be ever hard to better. Sure most of those who buy this radio broadcast will be long term fans, but many new ones will get into his music by this long awaited release. One set from one festival, thankfully recorded in it's entirety for us to enjoy all these years later. For the final two tracks he's also joined by Bonnie Raitt who brings her slide guitar to the party.
Stevie Ray Vaughan has seen mpore releases of his music released since he so sadly left us than when he was alive including several unreleased tracks from his various albums, and lots of stunning live sets recorded by radio stations of the time, this is one,and there's several more doing the rounds, but his playing gives us so much that, even if the recording quality is not the best the music is.
This set covers pretty near all of his most recent album 'Soul To Soul' plus songs such as #Pride And Joy' etc. It all sounds as fresh today as when it was first heard. This is an unmissable concert by SRV and the wonderful Double Trouble plus Bonnie Raitt. What more do you want, just get it. Then if you haven't aalready buy everything he's ever recorded it's absolute blues and rock magic, SRV is missed greatly but his music is as popular now as it ever was !

5.0 out of 5 stars THERE'S A TIME ALWAYS FOR MUSIC THIS GREAT, AND THIS IS GREAT !, 1 Sept. 2015
Doug Macleod is quite simply one of the finest musicians and singers there is. His music though very much rooted in the blues, has a style and sound all of it's own, and it's pure listening pleasure. This album has already won key awards i both blues and roots music. The recording quality is one of the best I've ever heard, 24 bit mastering (whatever that means) is superb throughout, you feel the music as if it's being played in the room you are sitting in. Songs of life, of the places he's been ,the things he's seen and his dry humour make this a collection any fan of real and excellently played songs will enjoy again and again, with just the gentelest of backing musicians leaving the spotlight well and truly on the main man. His guitar playing is simply the stuff of the legendary players, whether he's playing finger style or slide (and he's one of the very best around),. So overall this is music that must be heard to fully appreciate it, so go on treat yourself to a very special and highly enjoyable album by an American national treasure...remember the name Doug Macleod !

5.0 out of 5 stars SON OF THE GREAT MUDDY WATERS, SETS HIS OWN GROOVE AND IT'S EXCELLENT!, 18 Aug. 2015

This review is from: Rising Son (Audio CD)
OK, first off this is one of blues great's Muddy Waters sons, so he has the roots of the music sown in from birth, but great dads don't always produce such talented sons . But here this is blues of the highest and most exiting level, with his brother Mud Morganfield packing the venues all over Europe, so is Big Bill, and with an album this good it's hardly surprising. Full of that toe tapping Chicago blues, new songs but taken out of trhe blues tradition, aided by a band of seasoned musicians who certainly know their blues through and through. This is one release you quite simply don't want to miss. The upbeat guitar boogie sets the tone for an album full of the finest cherries on any cake.
An unmissable slice of blues surely as good as it gets, amazing stuff !

Ian Parker is one of the finest songwriters, vocalists and guitarists in Europe today, this quite wonderful will convert you to fan status, if your not already. Any album by Ian is from the top level, here along with his touring band he puts one superb show that you'll play again and again.
Can I also highly recommend Ian's new album 'Polotik Blues', it's an incredible surely award winning set. This live one though is one great place to start and enjoy the music, again and again. It's not all blues, but it is a set of absolutely wonderful music by a very major British talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T HIDEAWAY BUY THIS GREAT ALBUM OF BLUES AND SOUL *, 18 Aug. 2015

Eugene Hideaway Bridges is one great soul and blues man, should be counted as one of the best on the planet, awesome live performer, excellent and soulful guitarist, and that fabulous voice of his, guitar like B B King, voice a reminder of the great Sam Cooke.
This is an album full of top notch songs, well played and well produced. Any Hideaway album is worth five stars in anyone's book, and this is a great album by one of the nicest and most talented artists in the blues today.
Five star blues magic throughout !
