5.0 out of 5 stars WOW THIS TRULY IS A SOUL CLASSIC., 25 Sep 2012
This review is from: Soul Classics (Audio CD)
Maceo Parker former sax man with James Brown, plays as part of Prince's incredible band and he he is doing a live set with his own hotly funky trio plus a big band.Recorded in 2011for WDR in Cologne,Germany. This is a top rate release by a master musician, his trio that features Christian McBride on bass and Cora Coleman on drums plus as I say this quite wonderful big band.Soul classics here include 'Papa's got a brand new bag',Higher Ground','Rock Steady', and 'Soul Power'. A simply stunning version of Stevie Wonders 'I Wish' is worth the price of the album alone. In all nine great tracks by a funk and soul legend, not to be missed at any price if you like the sounds of Prince or James Brown, and surely one of the finest releases of the year, beautifully recorded and ready for the party to begin.Just roll up the carpet, and dance. This is a man a band and an album full of good things, so not one to miss.Good five star stuff this.Being live as well gives it that something extra the studio doesn't give this type of music, during the playing you also don't get any audience disruption thay save it to the end. So say no more just get that boogie feeling and dance.

4.0 out of 5 stars JOE BONAMASSA ROCK OR BLUES OR BOTH, 19 Sep 2012
You can't deny for one second that Joe Bonamassa is one greast guitarist, but my own take is although he is adverised as blues, lately he's more rock than blues, the Black Country Communion showed that he's very good at whatever he chooses. Beacon Theatre again shows me he's nowdays more rock styled in his approach. This album comes down both sides of the fence, some rock mixed with some pretty awesome blues. He clearly in his onward surge touching all areas of music that take his fancy and that's good.An artist who has amazing large output, who sweems to be always on tour.A new BCC album coming, then a live acoustic DVD early in the new year. His range is wide and you never know exactly what your going to get, other than it will be good.
This release for me is by far the best sincs John Henry, with my favourite of all being Blues De Lux, well produced, very good selection of songs some new ,some borrowed and some blue as they say.The band is as always right on the note. Good but for me not as good as the new releases by Walter Trout and Robert Cray, who've uped the level, Joe maybe putting too much out but each release recently is just a touch short of a classic, this is a very fine release make no mistake, but for me I know there's an even better one coming soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC IN THE MAKING,BEST SOLO ALBUM YET !, 19 Sep 2012
This review is from: Privateering (Audio CD)
Mark Knopfler is one of the finest and most consistent artists Britain has ever produced, from the early Dire Straits albums, listen again to those releases they bare still as great today as when they first appeared. Then The Notting Hillbillies, sadly only one album but still superb, onto the solo years. This is the latest in the solo years, a double album and twenty tracks including folk, blues, rock, and a tinge of country. The title track is as good a piece of MK writing as you'll ever get.The playing throughout is as one would expect superb, the addition of Kin Wilson on harmonica is a masterstroke by one of the best bluesmen on the scene. Having just taken this album away with me and listened to much of it several times now,for me it gets better all the time. There are songs that are immediately enjoyable, others that the melodies and others that take a few plays to realize the full quality of them.Naming songs when they are all new, and where all of them are so good would be a shame.Do please listen to one of 2012's best albums by an absolute master of his craft at the peak of his form, An album of truly lasting pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRITAIN'S BEST HARP MAN AND HIS BAND PRODUCE A CRACKER !, 14 Sep 2012

This review is from: Mind Games (Audio CD)
I got this album from Amazon a week after seeing Paul and his band live at the 2012 Gloucester Blues Festival where he gave a crowd thrilling performancs of rockin' blues. Both in the studio over now several top class albums and as a top rate live act Paul and the King Snakes have packed venues, thrilled festivals all over the world, won awards over and over again. So for Mind Games they have put together another cracking set of the music they simply play better than anyone else. A Paul Lamb album like his live shows is never a surun of slow blues but is a rompi' stonkin' party to boogie to and enjoy. He does the odd slower number but throughout theres a life and vitality to all he does. This album quite frankly rates around the best he's done, well produced, certainly the band are on top form, and a cracking choice of songs that fit them like a glove.Several original songs by the band are included plus a few covers given the bands ideal treatment.Chad Strartz is among the best blues vocalists in the Uk.The band have a rhythm section and solid as a rock. Do take a listen to a wonderful cover of Lee Dorsey'd 'Ya Ya Blues' and the final tracks great cover of Leadbelly's ' Midnight Special'.We are served up here a very tasty meal of twelve top class tracks by one of Europe's very best bands.Taking track two,the boogie beat beat of 'Come To The Conclusion' sums this set up well the conclusion is, this is an album that should be in every blues fans collection, Blues at its best by one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD SET OF CLASSIC BLUES, 1 Sep 2012
This review is from: Blues Don't Change (Audio CD)
This album was originally only available on from the bands website or at gigs. outside of the bands official releases they recorded over a few days this very nice collection of some blues covers that is a standout album with Peter Green (surely one of the finest blues guitarists ever) in really top form. The version here of B B King's 'When It All Comes Down' is one of my favourite versions of this song, and of course the band did a UK tour with the great man. From excellent versions of 'Little Red Rooster' the Howlin' Wolf song,to songs like 'Honey Bee','Don't Start Me Talking','Honest I Do' and 'Crawlin' King Snake' you know your getting some very fine blues played by a master of his craft and band. The rhythm section of Roger Cotton on keys,Larry Tolfee on drums and Pete Stroud on bass, give each track depth and quality throughout. This is an album that you'll play again and again enjoying it every time.A British blues classic and now available from Amazon what more could you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALBUM NUMBER THREE FROM 24 PESOS, 31 Aug 2012

I saw this band a couple of years ago now, doing the Sunday afternoon session at a blues weekend, and they blew the place apart,it was packed,no one wanted them to stop, they sold out of Cd's very quickly.Their mix of New Orleans blues and funk,by way of Memphis,Chicago and anywhere great music is played.Since then they have produced two further albums all self written and this foursome from London truly are the real deal, a band who each time they play they sure just get better and better, they are such fine and funky, they won a trip to play in Canada last year at one of the biggest blues fests there are. So here we have album number 3 and it's purely and simply brilliant that I'm amazed a big label hasn't picked them up yet,yes they are still on their own wonderful label.Again that mix of styles from slide based blues to New Orleans funk to Chicago rolling blues and a slice of a slightly more market based modern soul for good measure. This is an album that just has to be heard, a band you really do have to go and see. They deserve success, nice guys but awesome musicians and Julian Maitland has a cracking voice. This is an album of quality and enjoyment throughout, so go on treat yourself to one great slice of British music that will have those over the pond joining in as well.GREAT STFF BY A GREAT BRITISH BAND !

5.0 out of 5 stars ROBERT CRAY'S NEW ALBUM IS A GREAT LISTEN, 31 Aug 2012
Robert Cray never fails to produce anything but very fine albums indeed, for several years now he's brought some of the best blues releases throughout his career. Here with a change of label, a clutch of very good songs and no less than Kevin Shirley at the production desk. This is among the very best blues/soul releases of the year, a beautifully produced album in a hard back book style, with pages of photos, the road to the album, who's involved all give us a nice CD to own, which for me is why downloads badly miss out.Robert has a superb voice, plays some great guitar, leads one of the finest bands around, but what I think we have here is a set that comes out of thosde speakers and keeps you listening throughout it's entire length, because what we have is an album of really first class, and superbly played songs that will bring lasting pleasure. It's difficult to pick one or two tracks because I put it on and play the whole thing through it's truly that good. All new songs, many written by Robert and members of his band, who really know how to lay down a groove and keep it there. this band are great live and this set has a crisp but very live feel to it,some horns and even strings on one track,do nothing but add depth and quality to a release out of the very top shelf.Kevin shirley really knows how to pull the best out of those he produces (just think Joe Bonamassa for a shart). All I'll say is go out and treat yorself to one mighty fine album that without doubt will be there when the awards come on up,and very deservedly so.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR,AUTHENTIC TOO !, 15 Aug 2012
This review is from: Between The Ditches (Audio CD)
Not heard this slice of real down home blues, a three piece combo that will have those feet moving quickly.his is an album as intoxicating and unmissable as Seasick Steve's stuff but dare I say it even better. There's a mix of hill country blues, down home Mississippi blues,a funky driving rhythm that brings the whole Big Damn Band alive wherever you play it,and trust me this is one you'll play over and over again.Fourteen tracks, all written by the Rev. produced with great sound but never loses any sense of authenticity. This is music you just gotta hear. The band tour UK in the Autumn, and Jools Holland will hopoefully give them a slot On Later, because hear them once and the word will be out.You like slide guitar, you'll love it but it's those stomping beats and the Rev's amazing voice that will grab you very quickly. You've just got to hear this slice of real Indiana by way of the deep south album of great music.Unmissable !

Saw some of this set on a television show, and it simply was a knockout. The version of St James Infirmary is worth the price alone, the second half of the gig is the music of New Orleans (do get to hear his brilliant 'My New Orleans' album, a classic. This second half is as good as it gets true spirit and vitality of the Crescent City comes through every song. The first half, although superb,is a much more low key but still is filled with great songs that you'll want to hear time and again,as a DVD/CD set this is at under a tenner an absolute bargain but more than that here we have in Harry Connick Jr. an artist of massinve talent as a vocalist and musician in a live setting, giving his all in a release that surely rates as one of the very best live concerts around. This set will be played for years to come.Unmissable, and high quality throughout.
