Prisoner of Night and Fog
Prisoner of Night and Fog
by Anne Blankman
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.69

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, with a few minor caveats, 13 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Fictionalising something about Hitler's life is not necessarily a new idea but Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman certainly makes a gripping attempt at it.

As the blurb says, in 1930's Munich, danger lurks behind dark corners, and secrets are buried deep within the city. And our protagonist Gretchen's "Uncle Dolf" is indeed none other than Adolf Hitler.

The "disintegration" of Hitler over the book is particularly well handled; in some ways he's almost likeable in the early going (and probably would be if we didn't know who he was to become). Slowly the little things seem to seep out that hint at it his true character before the come out darker and darker as we hurtle towards the end of the book.

Gretchen meets and befriends a Jewish reporter named Daniel Cohen who suggests to her that her father (who had apparently died saving Uncle Dolf) had actually been murdered. Together, they work to unravel the mystery of how and why her father was really killed. Gretchen now has to doubt everything she has been taught, not least about hatred of the Jews, and decide for herself where her ultimate loyalties will lie.

The minor quibbles I have is that the historical details are sometimes a little too long and entrenched into the book and there are a couple of occasions where you are left waiting a little longer than you'd like to get some more "plot" but it doesn't hurt the "enjoyment" of the book too much.

I believe the author plans a sequel. After reading this first book, I can certainly say I would love to read what happens next.

Third Single Catallena
Third Single Catallena

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant single., 5 July 2014
This review is from: Third Single Catallena (Audio CD)
After School sub-unit Orange Caramel strike gold again with latest single Catallena.

Madonna's "Hung Up" meeting Euro-pop stylings, mixed with Punjabi folk music(Jutti Meri, Paula Mera) combining with lyrics that hint vague lesbianism and a video that spikes the entire basis that the K-Pop industry is based on make this one of the pop songs of the year, whatever the language you speak.

The cute choreography doesn't hurt either.

The extra tracks aren't quite up to that standard but they're not bad, especially "So Sorry" which is again the kind of upbeat Euro-disco pop songs Orange Caramel can pull off with ease.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great item for your pencil case!, 5 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I got this for my dad who often is paper-clipping or stapling notes and stuff together and sighing in exasperation when the paper clip tears into the paper or the staples fail to penetrate all the sheets.

That he could use this Supaclip easily shows just how fool proof it is to set up and use. It clips papers together easily and without damaging them and the clips are reusable. They come off easily (when you want them to that is, otherwise they are very secure) and all in all they do the trick.

And it's much lighter than any stapler I've ever used.

Great item.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but wouldn't roll back for me!, 5 July 2014
This review is from: Ambi Toys Humpty Dumpty (Toy)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It provided a modicum of fun, no question, but I wasn't that convinced by the claims made that you could roll it away and it would come rolling back. Not on our laminate flooring it won't. Nor on the tiled floor in the kitchen (where you wouldn't really want a child playing anyway!)

The bright colours, the smiling face and it's durability make it a fun toy but it's not cheap. And when you can't get it to perform it's most highlighted function there can't help but be a certain disappointment. Of course the child in your life won't realise this, and it's still fun - hence the three stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive...but very good at what it does, 5 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Having previously purchased a much (much!) cheaper electric shaver I was intrigued to see what difference there would be in a model that retailed at over six times that amount would make.

First things first and there is a pleasing futuristic technology feel for your money. The charger unit has a digital display that keeps you informed in percentage terms about how much juice is in it. It has two modes, including one that automatically adjusts to your facial hair's thickness and you really can tell the difference when you use that mode.

It's a bit free-er in terms of the movement than the more fixed shaver I previously had and whilst it took a couple of times to get used to it's actually quite brilliant. It seems a very clean and close shave and at the end of the day there is certainly a lot less stubble, showing what a close job this does.

The cleaning unit is easy to use, albeit bulky, and it has to be said that it can be very noisy, but the technical side of things with this shaver is almost without fault. The only other minor complaint might be that the battery life doesn't match that of other units I've previously used.

The only thing in my mind that just knocks it off the full marks is the price. It does the job, no question, but it's a lot to pay. Some might think it's a little bit too much to pay.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, 26 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I may just be a little bit less "technologically minded" than others as I struggled in the first place top get this working, not quickly finding where to unscrew to put the batteries in, batteries that weren't included.

Once I'd got past that little trouble (and realised you need to charge the car via the included USB cable) it was fun to use whilst it lasted in terms of charge, though to be fair its not the kind of thing that would amuse me for hours.

A fun stocking filler or birthday top-up.

Knightley and Son
Knightley and Son
by Rohan Gavin
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.24

3.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining start, 17 Jun 2014
This review is from: Knightley and Son (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The character of 13 year old Darkus Knightley is a clear attempt to forge a "young Sherlock Holmes" type character. His father, who has been in a coma for four years, was a top private investigator and his son visits him and goes over old case files whilst hoping his father awakes.

Naturally he does and the two are thrown into an intriguing case. The father is reluctant to involve his son at first but soon they are both in the thick of things.

It has much that young readers will enjoy without ever really catching fire. Still its combination of action, comedy and cerebral deduction could be a winner if the characters themselves can be rounded out next time.

4.0 out of 5 stars does the job, 13 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Although a little on the expensive side compared to other products that you could use to clean up after your pets the simple fact is its very effective and does the job.

Spray, leave for a few minutes then hoover over the spot. Stain gone and clean fresh smell pervades the room.

Ease of use and convenience outweighs the relatively high cost, hence 4 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, 13 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have two young dogs who perhaps don't need the joint and energy boost this product gives, according to the blurb. But they've certainly lapped it up when added to their breakfast and I can certainly see and feel the difference on their coats. Even our ugly duckling Ruby, who puffs up like a Gorilla, is showing the benefit.

Packaging and built-in dispenser is quick and easy to use and helps with portion size.

All in all a great product that seems to do the trick.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps wiser to upgrade, but a decent product., 7 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is another in the range of compact chargers from Noco that has the safety features that promise it is impossible to damage the battery you are charging no matter how unmechanically minded you may be.

For car batteries it might be wiser to upgrade to one of the more powerful chargers by the same company. This would seem ideal for ongoing battery maintenance though.

Easy to use and does the trick.
