An interesting read. What makes an intelligent man turn to thieving? Not answered but tough on his family.
An absorbing read.

Black humour and a body count nearing double figures, James Craig has exceeded him self with a tongue in cheek take on modern policing in the metropolis. A great read but don't take it too seriously. Reccommended.

Cliched shaggy dog story. Promising start as I knew the locale but Ms Thomson's tale became bogged down with annoying red herrings. Not reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real McCoy, 27 July 2013

A true life adventure story as told by the hero himself . Having read reams of fictional war stories this was a refreshing, and sobering, tale. To be fair some judicious editing wouldn't have gone amiss as some of the derring do becomes repetitive and a little far fetched. Though TF's observations of the ordinary are priceless, the Frenchman's obsession with shaking hands with each other, for one. The universal smoking of cigarettes , another. The random unfairness of war. Reccommended.

James Runcie has written another thought provoking set of stories featuring Canon Sidney Chambers. The moral dimension to life (and death) is given much prominence and lifts these 'who dunnits' out of the ordinary. There is a slight credibility gap in that so much villainy occurs in and around Cambtidge and environs but Runcie's story telling skills soon win the reader over. There is a T.V. Series lurking in the wings. Thoroughly reccomended.

P.Kerr once again wears his anti nazi/fascist heart on his sleeve. Bernie Gunther appearing just a tad too p.c. for his time but another absorbing tale, all the same. Kerr's trade mark attention to detail is evident , he must have swallowed the road maps of both Berlin and Munich so precise are the street directions. Worth reading.

J.G. Was a revelation to me when I read Empire of The Sun and this is the sequel, just as good. A classic 'literary novel' of the first water. I marvelled at his description of the ordinary and of the less so which left me revelling in his powers of insight and description.
If it isn't already , I imagine this will be an A Level set book in years to come. Thoroughly reccomended.

An excellent read . A literary novel up there with Conrad as a window on the Orient and it's people.
Perceptive observation of humanity under incredible hardship. It is a revelation the state China was in 70 years ago compared to where it stands in the world today.

4.0 out of 5 stars London Calling again, 23 Mar 2013

Another engaging London based crime tale from James Craig. Some gratuitous sex n' violence ,which is not to every one's liking, but the story holds up well. Craig knows the Covent Garden area well and, seemingly, Charring Cross Nick which adds to the authenticity of this who dunnit. Reccomended .

An excellent read. Rich on period detail, quite a social history book, as well as a plot that kept me interested from page one. Thoroughly recommended .
