An engrossing read, balanced, thoughtful and erudite. As one might expect from the man who edited one of the major newspapers in the region!

2.0 out of 5 stars lousy transfer of a SUPERB album, 19 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Genius + Soul = Jazz (Audio CD)
I have this on LP and bought the CD for the car. I have numerous CD transfers of (mainly classical) albums dating back to the 1930s - this one sounds compressed, muffled and unbelievably boring. Very little of the music's excitement and energy gets through. What a shame.
Just to be clear: this is one of the great Ray Charles albums. The music is worth 5 stars, the transfer minus 1, so average... two!

5.0 out of 5 stars decent quality and so quick to use!, 4 Jun 2013
I have quite an extensive micro 4/3 system, including the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 lens that is not a great deal bigger or heavier than this Olympus offering and has incomparably better optical quality as well as low light capability.
So why did I buy the bodycap lens? Simplicity and speed, mainly.
It only offers f8 so you can't waste time wondering which aperture would suit the shot best.
It has a hyperfocal detent which ensures that everything from about a foot away to infinity will be in focus - if you're shooting landscapes or close(ish)-ups it's worth moving the lever one way or the other, but otherwise just leave it in the middle - and the amount of time it saves not auto-focussing has allowed me some real grab shots which I would have missed with more "advanced" equipment.
OK, optically it's no better than a good mobile phone camera (although definitely much better than Holga lenses - I have one of their micro 4/3 ones), but mobile phones can't shoot in RAW!
Recommended, even at UK prices...

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, well-chosen and erudite, 1 Jun 2013

This is a beautiful collection of tales, covering a great range of styles from the very traditional to more contemporary works that draw heavily on traditional themes. Chandler clearly loves this field and has provided wonderfully comprehensive notes as well as useful short biographies of the authors included. The translations are (as far as a non-reader of Russian can judge!) faithful, pithy and unflinching; occasionally some of the imagery is crude, to be sure, but that is what the originals were like, and it must be stressed that many of these tales were never intended for children's ears - the introduction makes this quite clear.
Thoroughly recommended - many of the tales are extremely moving, and those that aren't are generally very funny!

Superbly idiomatic, good sound, at this price there's no possible reason for not buying this! Probably the best work from this orchestra that I've heard.

Hugh has done a beautiful job - of course he's surrounded himself with superb colleagues, producers, arrangers etc but then you would, wouldn't you? Really thoughtful and bears repeated listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, thought-provoking collection, 5 Jan 2013

One of the best Grantas I can remember. Not a weak link in it. Not a single writer that I'd heard of (well, OK, Tom Stoppard, but that's only a foreword) and every one of them I shall be looking out for from now on. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Time Machine, 6 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Small and neat. When I plugged it into my MacBook Pro it "guessed" I wanted to use it for Time Machine backup and formatted itself within 5 seconds. Decent data transfer speed via the USB2 cable and really handy that it doesn't need its own power. Great little item.

...are made by B+W. This one is also beautifully compact and comes with a useful push-on lens cap that's much more practical than most.
